So, I hungry, and feeling rather creative. I decided I'd go create some edible masterpiece in the kitchen. Something delicious, but somewhat healthy. I had already started cutting ham for an omelette, and decided to throw in some broccoli. The idea sounded great in my mind. I imagined cheesy broccoli steaming mouth-wateringly on my plate... and anything goes with egg, right?

It was absolutely terrible. :goodgrief I ate it because I wasn't about to throw it away, but it was not good AT ALL. Especially since I used mixed cheese. (It comes in a pre-grated little package... four types of cheese... at least one of those types did not mix with broccoli...)

 So, anyone else ever had some kitchen disasters? You know, the things you think should taste really good... and just really don't?

**winces** Yuck-O! Blech! Next time, it's ham and Mexican cheese blend, and SALSA (added to the cooked omelette). This is actually what I had for lunch.

My biggest disaster was making a stirfry by using olive oil in a recipe that called for peanut oil. Never, ever, EVER do this. The result is..... unpleasant to smell and even more unpleasant to eat.

I'll try that-- I love eggs.

:nyah: I love stir-fries, but I just know that if I attempted any on my own, I'd screw something up horribly. I don't trust the ideas that sound good in my head.

I decided to try and make a garlic chicken dish served over rice once.....the consistancy was rather.....snotty.

OH! I accidentally put what I thought was olive oil but was sesame oil into some kind of an Italian dish. NOT at good idea. Gotta watch those oils!

Some restaurant that we went to actually had a ham, cheddar, and broccoli omelet on their menu. Don't remember which one it was though.

See, I am -sure- it could work somehow! :hehehehe: Just apparently not with my cooking skills.

Eh, it was prolly just the whole mixed cheese thing. White cheese's don't mix well with eggs. Are you sure the cheese was even good?

Here's an old recipe of mine (when I went by the username Melysande):

It has eggs, cheese, and broccoli, but no ham. :)

Actually I understand your mistake, reading about it sounds good in my mind. But if you say it was horrible, IŽll take your word for it.

My biggest kitchen disaster was the first time I ever cooked for my boyfriend. I guess I was so nervous that I ruined the meal, from then for about 6 months he never let me cook for him. He thought I wasnŽt a good cook, but one day I surprised him with a dinner and he started to let me cook. Now IŽm mostly the cook of the house.

I really am a very good cook, just got nervous the first time.

Galaxia, this means you need to add a little more milk to your batter to thin it out slightly. And you need to make sure the pan is evenly heated at a low temperature. When you want to test whether the griddle or pan is hot enough, wet your fingers with water and flick the droplets of water onto the pan. If the pan sizzles, it's hot enough. If it doesn't, it's not. Make sure when you pour your batter to take exactly enough in your ladle to pour onto the griddle in one smooth movement. You can't keep adding to the pancake without it looking awful when you're done. And you need to watch the pancakes closely to see if the edges are turning golden and if the air bubbles have left holes all over the pancake, not just around the outer edges. (And if they're still bubbles, rather than holes, the pancake isn't cooked). Then you can gently lift the edge just slightly to see if the color is right on the bottom. Pancakes should only be flipped once. Otherwise, they look weird. And if you have problems flipping them, adjust the amount you pour onto the griddle to make the pancakes small enough for the spatula to accomodate them.

it took me a lot of screwing up to really get cooking. I made pork chops once that were hard as rocks. I also made mashed potatos once that were horrific. I boiled the potatos and then cut them up and mashed them. Apparently you're supposed to cut them first and then boils the potatos. :::shrug::: I'll know better next time.

i would have left out the ham, but i just don't like ham... anyways, cooking disasters... well, a few weeks ago i found a recipe for country fried steak and i thought it would be fun to make. so i made the batter, i followed the directions exactly, i dipped the cube steak in the batter and everything, and then i put it in the hot oil, and the batter just lifted right off. and it wouldn't get golden brown, so i had these steaks sitting there covered in oil and what little batter that decided to stay on, and they really were pathetic. the batter looked almost like fat, so it was hard for me to eat because i kept thinking that thats what it was, although i knew better. my dad was really nice about it and aid it was good, although i'm sure he fed his to the dogs. anyways, i won't be doing that again.

To be honest, if i'd thought of that combination I too would have thought it would turn out nice... In fact I still think it could, sounds like the mixed cheese messed it up. It would be interesting to find out if anyone else has tried this and liked it.

it was probably the mexican cheese...i would try it with just plain sharp cheddar.
