What's the omen to an owl hooting right outside my bedroom window, three times.

*sighs* I know... That's the only omen I know about, specifically the change would be death of someone.

My husband is in Maine, flying home Thursday, my father isn't in the bestest of best health, and we lost two very close family members this year, not to mention damned near losing my sister due to pancreatis and botched surgery. Three months later and she's still moving slow.... I've hit my threshold on pain, death and suffering.

I've read of it as being considered an omen of death.

However, the owl does not reflect death to me, at least not beyond being a bird of prey. I would take it as a sign from Athene, personally, although I am very biased. You are not paying attention to what you need to and overlooking a very simplistic lesson or detail.

Could mean tasty mice. As others have said, the owl is often considered a harbinger of death, like the banshee. Do you know what kind og owl it was? Grey, Great-horned, barred, barn, snowy, screech?

Owl (great-horned variety specifically) was my first totem animal and I've had an especial rapport with birds since. That is less than relevant, but for me owl has always appeared at the best and perhaps coziest moments of my life, but also they have been times of great change.

The first time the bird actually appeared I was staying in the woods with my Dad the summer after he left my mother. I don't recall much of week (I was 7) except having fun and being close to Dad. It was cozy and nice, once of those great good moments from childhood, and oh so rare. Also a time of great flux and sadness and ddep pain. The second was during my brief college career, which was both the best (I had a lot of riends, they really cared about me, and I was having a blast) and worst (i was doing too many drugs, drinking like I was going for the Guinness book of records, and generally too burned out and destrought to consider suidcide) time of my life. And the third was one random day when i was laying in the grass meditating. I was looking for a job and trying to sort some stuff out, but developing enormously. For me, owl is good, and accompanied by a feeling that something not quite mundane is present.

In summary, owl appears to me at defining times of my life; at moments that are sublimely memorable in times of flux. Islands in the storm. Could this be for you? It sounds like you're full up with death and destruction right now.

It means that if you're named Ichabod Crane and you live in Sleepy Hollow, you need to leave town immediately, before the Headless Horseman comes to claim your head.

I've been getting a few visits from owls lately too but I work with Hecate and owls are associated with her so I always see a visit from an owl as a message from Hecate.

Nice to know posts are taken seriously around here....

My bad though. It did sound like a "Charmed" thing to ask. Seriously though, I was curious about owl omens. :)

This is from this page:

There are so many Native American traditions and stories about owls that I can only hope to touch on them here. I would be grateful if anyone would share information from specific tribes, or any stories they would be willing to tell me.

In his book Medicine Wheels, Roy I. Wilson speaks about the Owl as being one of the spirit messengers in the inner circle of seven stones around the sacred altar of the Native American Sundance Wheel. He says that "The owl is the bird of the shadows, the darkness, the night. It is the messenger of death". Yet "The ability of the owl to see so well in the darkness of the night speaks to us of the spirit of the owl, as a spirit messenger, guiding us through the darkness of our night of bereavement. Therefore, the owl not only gives the message of impending death, but when it continues to manifest itself over a period of time to someone, it may be giving the message to that person that he or she is being called to a ministry to the bereaved".

:foopsies: I really didnt mean to make light of your question, I was just reacting to a joke, sometimes it helps to lighten such tough questions with a little humor. I didn't think you sounded like "Charmed," but my answer would have been the same as many others or referring to Hecate or other Deities who are associated with owls, which had been covered. So, sorry if my ROFLMAO was offensive.

Oh I know you weren't. LOL I laughed too. It was tongue in cheek because I would have smirked too. As I said, it did sound fluffy bunny LOL.

:hugz: Wasn't offensive at all. Oddly one of the things I did read was that if a pregnant woman hears an owl outside of the home, (and no one else hears the same owl, or if she's alone) it means the impending child is a girl. My family from generations back can't throw a boy to save our lives sometimes... And we're trying for a third so maybe three times a girl :).

I've always had an owl that follows me from move to move. I catch a glimpse or hear her calling in the night. She is a screech owl and the very first time I heard her, she scared the shit out of me by nesting right outside my window when I was 8 years old in rural Arkansas.

In ancient Greece, owls were often seen as a symbol of good fortune.

In contrast, the Romans saw owls as omens of impending disaster. Hearing the hoot of an owl indicated an imminent death.

There were also beliefs about events predicted by the number of owl hoots:
1 : impending death
2 : success in imminent venture
3 : woman will be married into the family
4 : disturbance
5 : imminent travel
6 : guests arriving
7 : mental distress
8 : sudden death
9 : good fortune

Interesting stuff:)

Woot VB! LOL, my brother in law's girlfriend just had their daughter. It certainly fits with the number of hoots.

To be truthful, usually I don't let such things bother me. Owls are gonna hoot, it's what they do. Someone had it right, there may have been tasty mice outside. But with DH flying tomorrow, and homelife such as it has been lately... I'm extremely nervous at the thought of something awful happening to a loved one. I'll rest easier tomorrow. And then it's off to Las Vegas on a business trip with hubby which I really don't want to do because it means leaving the 6 year old behind and that's almost as bad. So it's a decision... what's mentally healthier, letting my husband alone for a week grieving over our two year old or staying with our daughter that prefers to have overnights at her grandparents anyway. *grin*

Ah well, babble babble.. Thanks for the response VB, I tried to look at decent owl omens online last night but couldn't find much.

I tend to avoid headless everythings, no matter what they ride. On a more serious note: I do not believe that omens will come to those who do not understand them. An omen is given to you in a way that you will understand, if you pay attention. Omens are not meant to confuse you, in my experience, they are obvious to you. Your instincts tell you what they mean.
