I was just reading Shani's thread on Evil Fae and it was very interesting and got me thinking.
How do humans come into contact with and/or work with any type of fae?

Well, technically speaking the Tuatha De Daanan are fairies, just really really powerful ones. I work with them like most people word deities.
The smalled more mischievous (ha ha) ones aren't really hard to get in contact with. I don't really understand how you work with them, when people say that. I mean, I've seen them and seen evidence of them, but I think it would be hard to convince them. We have an, uh, working relationship, heh.
When I'm out in the woods, I like to leave offerings to them, because I'm in their space and it really can't hurt to make them happy. I like to leave butter and honey, but if I don't have anything with me I'll pick a few berries for the garden and use those.
I get things stolen and moved around a lot. They seem to like my bathtub, as thats where they dump all the stuff that dissapears. Rings, beads, anything. I've lately been working on trying to convince them to leave my things alone if I let them mess with my hair at night. Which they may already be doing.
The most that I work with them would be useing elementals, which I suppose can be considered fairies. Air spirits are pretty good about sending subtle messages to people as long as its not to complicated. I think maybe, just maybe, if I asked for a favor, they might help, but I'm a little afraid to try!

Reading Suggestions: RJ Stewart ("Underworld Initiation", etc... start with UI then look up the others). Orion Foxwood, "Faerie Teachings."
Short and oversimplified: You learn to notice them, you learn what they are (mostly by working with them) and you forge alliences. No one will have quite the same connections or restrictions or methods... it will depend on who you are dealing with and what you are willing to do for them.

I adore them, even though they can drive me batty. I just leave them do whatever they want. I can't say I work w/them. Mostly they hide things on me, and when I am so frustrated and say enough show me where it is, it always turns up. I definitely believe in them, and have seen them. I mean I could be searching in a room for something, and when I come back into that room or just turn around and there it is in plain sight - you just know they are real. I have not left offerings for them, I'll start doing that. I do let them have their way around my house, and feel they kind of take care of me and mine in return.

This is great advice. If I'm going to ask them for help, I'll leave offerings of milk or honey outside for them a week or two in advance, then another offering after my magical work. Here are a couple good books: The Witches Guide to Faery Folk (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0875427332/qid=1101961578/sr=8-15/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i15_xgl14/103-3317711-5492602?v=glance&s=books&n=507846) and Faery Magick (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1564145956/qid=1101961838/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/103-3317711-5492602) There's a book I borrowed from a former friend years ago, but I don't remember the title.

The Fairy-Faithy in Celtic Countries is $16.99 retail on the back cover.
Another couple books I'd suggest would be Healing with Faeries by Doreen Virtue
and Fairy Paths & Spirit Roads by Paul Devereaux.
Another book, Shanti might like this one from her evil fae thread... At the Bottom of the Garden: A dark history of fairies, hobgoblins and other troublesome things by Diane Purkiss.
To use fairies actively, Brian Froud and Jessica Macbeth have collaborated on an oracle deck with Froud's work. It's one of the best decks I've worked with. I love my set of cards. Healing with Fairies by Virtue also comes with a deck. I haven't used those yet though.
Vert's two books are good too.. I was going to suggest those as well :) Rhiannon beat me to the fairy faith book too. All good suggestions :)

She gave you the wrong link. It's http://www.sacred-texts.com. That website is probably the single most useful site on the internet for anyone interested in folklore and mythology.

I've seen them and seen evidence of them
Just out of curiosity, which type have you seen and what did they look like?

I would never suggest reading anything by McCoy. Her information is fradulent and contradictory and her content is almost as ridiculous as SRW's. Stay away.

They werent any type that I could discern, but they were small, about the size of dimes. White bodies/clothing and golden heads/skin/hair. There were a lot of them, floating down from somwhere, and disapearing right before they hit the grass.
Another time, I think I saw a leprechaun, not sure though. It was St. Patricks day, and ever St. Patricks day I used to go looking for leprechauns. One year, right outside my house right around my feet I saw a streak of green light, and I always like to think it was a leprechaun at least :tongueout

I don't "work" with the Fae, persay - I consider them wild spirits, and while I'll interact with them, I don't go out of my way to initiate it. I leave them the occasional offering, we respect one another, I don't bother them, they don't bother me. It works better this way for me. All the fae I know are dirty, wicked, wild-eyed things, weirdly-proportioned, twig and thorn tangled hair, tribal marked...and while I respect them and honour them as part of the natural order of my world, I don't feel the need to work with them.

I'm afraid I don't think much of Mccoy... too many examples of failing the potato test on one hand and on the other I just don't click to the worldview offered in her books. I don't think I've read the other.
