View Full Version : Goddesses and Spiders

I'm just wondering what deity has spider related to her, or shapeshifts into a spider.
I had a dream last night, in which I was meeting with a deity for the first time. I was told that sometimes she likes to show herself to her devotees whilst in the form of a spider.
She Goddess herself had long black hair, wore and red and black or green and black dress in her human guise. And also favoured chiken eggs. Either boiled or raw. But only Chicken eggs.
The thing is, I remember in the dream talking about meeting 'Morrigan' only from what I know The Morrigan doesn't associate with Spiders.
So what other deity could this be? Or could it be Morrigan trying to get my attention through my dreams, to reconnect with me, as I haven't been as devoted as I should be to my Craft workings and worshipping Her as much as I should.

I had noticed in a previous post that you were wanting to focus on the Welsh pantheon. So...I did a quick search....brought up a few pages mentioning Arianrhod...

Hope this helps!

Maybe...
Spider Woman - Navaho Holy Women that taught them how to weave.
Uttu - Sumerian spider goddess of weaving and of clothing.
Arachne (although not exactly a goddess)
Um, that's all I got. Nothing on the chicken eggs, sorry.

Thanks guys, I'd initially thought of Arachne.
With Arianrhod though, is she depicted as having black hair, I'd always imaged Her as having blonde hair.

Ah I wondered if she was associated with the spider or not. Thanks.

While reading your post I immediately thought of Ariadne too.

"Athena sprinkled Arachne with drugs of Hecate , and in a trice, touched by the bitter lotion, the girl was metamorphosed into a spider."

If you're into the drow there is Lolth, the Goddess of Spiders Drow Gods (http://www.realms.force9.co.uk/UD/gods/gdrow.htm)

What exactly is Drow?

Drow is a race from Dungeons and Dragons...and Lloth is a totally made up dark goddess in the Dungeons and Dragons universe. Because of that...I really wouldn't take Lloth into account.

I didn't see anything about spiders, tho....just that they thought she "became" Arianrhod in the Welsh pantheon.

returning to your original post, i was under the impression that the obsession i have with spiders and the fact that i belong to the Morrigan were merely coincidental. Maybe it isn't. Juat becasue something isnt documented or even isnt widely accepted, doesnt mean it isnt true.
I am starting to wonder if perhaps there is a link between the two. to me, the link seems very obvious, now i think about it directly. she has work for me which would make sense to think of in an arachnid mind-frame.
i shall ask when i see her tonight. knowing herself, i wont get anything resembling a straight answer, but give me a few days and i may return.
as for arianrhod being dark haired, i have never come across that before. arianrhod translates from welsh as 'silver wheel', and i have always known her to have blonde hair. ariande, on the other hand, is dark-haired.

Yeah I've never seen anything depicting arianrhod with dark hair, but sometimes you just never know. I tried devining the other night, but I think my mind was a little too busy to stay focused. So I stopped in the end.

see other thread on lolth - especially with the dark goddess overtones you described - lilith and arachne together?
