hello. a friend of mine wanted to "burn a candle of mourning" for the people in manhattan.
he started with a black candle and had had some adverse effects. he called me to ask what color he should use to reverse the black/show mourning?
my understanding outside of color therapy techniques. "stereotypical" is that black is a negative focus.
i suggested using white to reverse, what to use for mourning?
funereal settings usually have white.
he is EXTREMELY elementally oreintated.

Hmm... odd to have an adverse reaction. Black candles are used to absorb, or remove, negativity...
At any funeral that I can recall attending, the candles (if there were any) were white or a light color, like pale yellow. Don't recall any black ones...

thanks willowraven and runesinger.
to continue with more detail...
he told me "adverse reaction" basically what happened was that he lit the candle, with no wardings, and then bugged out because the candle did not melt or "go down" in the hour and a half that he left it burning.
willow raven thanks for the link!

I have mainly been burning white coloured candles lately in my quartz cluster candle holder, but for colour, I think he should just go with whatever feels comfortable.
I also like purple as a colour of healing and peace, or sky blue.
In some countries yellow is a colour of mourning, so maybe he could also research the different colours OTHER cultures use?

I read a book where they used flame red as a color for funerals. I think their funerals were more a time of rememberance and keeping that memory burning strong than they were about mourning. I always liked that idea myself. (If I ever die, I'll have to remember to suggest that. Or something like that.)
Since fire is also good at cleansing, maybe it's something to suggest.
I'd be careful and give it consideration though as fire is also of strong passion which can lead to anger, and that's something the world doesn't need right now.
But on the other hand, maybe seeing a representation of anger melting away is a good thing.
I guess it's all a matter of perception. Or maybe more accurately, whatever energies you believe it implies are the energies you are sending out. :)
But after white and purple, it was my third thought. Green (the peace and life of the Earth) being my fourth.

As in burning the problem right off? Hm I think Water might be a gentler cleanser :)

This is what I was taught. When you burn a black candle you should burn at least the same amount of white candles. The black absorbs and dispels the negativity and will leave a void, that nasty things are drawn to and can fill, unless you refill it by burning white candles. I don't know if that explains it all or if I've described it correctly but you get the drift.

I think yellow or pale yellow is a good color to burn for attributes such as "remembrance" or "thinking of you."

last night, when I went to burn some more candles outside in front of the house, I used 4 whites and one purple. I set the white ones in a little circle & put the purple candle in the middle of them. I remembered, after I lit them, that I should've carved some runes in them. But I think they still worked fine.

I'm sure it worked quite well LadyStarlite :) It's the intent that matters, not what you write on the candle :)

One of the local garden centers had some "summer candles" lol , on sale really cheeeap ....... they are shaped and look like like tall rocks.......... and I bought them with the intention of making a small outdoor stonehenge type ring of stones with candles........ they are grey........ ...... Now I know what I shall do with them ...... along with some other workings .....inside the ring........
Use whatever resonates with your feelings ........ and your imagination............
what is in your heart is more important than the color of the candle .........
