This is one of those crazy things that I have contemplated since the attack on my country. I know that it is simply a way of distracting myself from the horror of what has taken place, but I feel that that is ok to do.

The Cup

The cup is what I feel to be one of the most basic, yet most incredible inventions of man. Why? It is perhaps the most diverse thing that we have ever created. A cup can be used for almost anything. It can be something sacred, practical, or fun.

One of mankind's largest fantasies is the existance of the Holy Grail, a cup. Whether or not it exists I do not know, but look at our obsession with it. The Catholic church uses a cup in their mass to represent the cup of Jesus during the last supper. It is considered holy. One of the most stirring images of war is the soldier that receives a glass of water from a nurse. It represents healing and hope in the future. For those survivors from the WTC and the Pentagon, you can guarantee that one of the first things they will receive from the rescuers is that glass of water.

On a more daily basis, a cup can be used to eat just about anything that isn't finger food. I use cups for pasta, soup, cereal, ice-cream, oatmeal, etc... It is so much more manageable than either a plate or bowl. You can simply hold a cup in one hand and not have to worry about having to balance it. A cup can be used as a flower vase or a pencil holder or for numerous art projects. It is also considered a landmark in a child's development when they can advance from a bottle to a cup. Millions of people gather daily to simply share a cup of something with one another, whether it be coffee, tea, booze, or whatever. Most peole have an obsession with a form of drink. It may consist of anything, yet it still comes in a cup.

Anyways, I give a toast (another use) to the cup. Its continual diversity is something that perhaps we ourselves should strive for.

What do you use your cups for?

... is nothing more than a poor cousin of the far more versatile and useful Bottle. It performs the same function, but travels better, does not have to be held upright at all times, and allows convieniant storage. Additionally, it can preserve its contents, where the cup is ever exposed to the outside, which can cause its contents to spoil or evaporate.

All hail the bottle!

Sure, but who's ever searched for a Holy Bottle?

LOL Loopy!!! ;)

Yes, Socharis, bottles are good for preservation, perhaps too good. When something is in a cup a person tends to want to enjoy it right then and there, while some things in bottles tend to get put on the back shelf and forgotten about. Besides, you can't eat cereal from a bottle.

We just got these great big jar mugs, they hold 2 cans of coke at once plus ice... very useful for geeks - it means more coke, and less time spent running to the fridge...

I have a simple wine glass for a chalice on my altar. Every time I look at it it reminds me of the Goddess as a Mother. Her womb, her fertile Earth, the oceans that help us sustain life.

And my favourite bottle holds kahlua mudslide; even if it isn't holy I find it very useful :)
