I've been watching alot of Star Trek: Enterprise lately, and so i've just got to ask: has anyone ever tried the Vulcan spiritual path? I'm talking, of course, of the religion followed by the Vulcans, a fictional, alien race from the cult tv show Star Trek.

Based on the teachings of Surak, an ancient philosopher from the times when warring Vulcan tribes were nearly destroying the planet, Vulcan religiosity is based on the supression of emotion and the search for a purely logical existance.

So, are there any closet Vulcans around?

I thought about it years ago, while in middle school (a time certainly when I wanted to not let the emotional barbs of my classmates get to me), but I decided the explanation to my parents wouldn't be worth the trouble. :antennae:

Of course, people now tell me I should go get "an ear job" as I'm logical and pretty rational in times of crisis. I draw the line there!

I am a closet trekkie, and I saw the recent enterprise episode...was a good episode. It reminds me very much of a form of like Confucianism and Buddhism rolled into each other. You should...then you can double up as an elf at Halloween time ;). Namaste

I think that supressing emotion is an unhealthy idea, however increasing one's use of logic and reason are a good idea. Emotions need to be expressed in healthy ways. Bottleing up your emotions has alwaysed caused problem for the people I know who do it. I think that if people stoped acting on their emotions, stoped to think about them, and talk about them, and then chose a rational course of action, you could get close to the Teachings of Surak. Remember, Vulcans still have emotions, they just don't express them at all. I think a more moderate path, a middle path to touch on a Buddhist idea, is a better option than either extream of being dominated by your emotions, or totaly aoiding expressing them. You can express your emotions in honest, constructive ways that can lead to conflict resolution when you examine your feelings using logic and reason.

Needless to say I'm a huge Enterprise fan, and all around sci fi fan.... I have autographs from TOS, and been to a few conventions.

Oh, and I don't think I could ever give up humor or laughing. LOL It's too much fun!
