you can drink rice or soy milk
I have found that as your taste buds "recover" your taste for one or the other changes. My kids drink rice milk and do NOT like soy for example. As to vitamins eat healthy eat your fruits and veggies :)

Ooh, I used to drink this delicious soy milk. I think the brand name had something with "Dream" in it. But I enjoy soy milk as a whole. Chocolate and Vanilla flavors are good, and taste great in Amaranth cereal.

It's in cod liver oil too, which you can now, thankfully, find in capsule form.

Vit D is also found in abundance in nuts as well.

Calcium (sp) tablets because if you cut your milk you bones can become brittel. I have these lovely strawberry flavoured chewable ones :)

I believe that as a woman, no matter how young or young at heart, you need to take supplements if you cut out milk or meat. Guys probably should too. There's more than just Vit D involved. You need to take the supplements with a meal or food that has a small amount of fat in it or else it doesn't really do that much good. You'll just excrete the vitamins. I used to be anorexic in my teen years and had to visit a nutritionist every two weeks for a year. Unfotunately vitamins don't work the same way fat does. They don't get stored for later use.
And YES it does taste that much different. To me anyway. Some are much better tasting than milk. I get a few different kinds that taste like not so thick vanilla milkshakes.
Good Luck!

Even if you don't cut these things out I think it's a good idea to take a multivitamin regularly at least, just to make sure you never miss out on your minerals and vitamins.

I think soy milk is awesome in cereal, I can't tell the difference....
I've never been fond of cow's milk and anyhow, I'm lactose intolerant. It hurts me tummy bad.

I've heard that most people become more lactose intolerant as they grow out of infancy. Naturally we aren't dependent on milk as our only source of nutrition, so our natural tolerance kicks in. I also heard that only newer generations (the last "species or blood type" of humans) actually keeps the enzymes for most of their life to digest it properly because they were the ones to bring other animals milk into our diet. This could all be a crock of s**t. Just things I hear from my nutrition buffs.

the biggest problem of cutting milk out is the calcium, as for Vitamin D, your skin creates that for you every time you go into the sun, it's a type of photosynthisis.
The soy milk that has "Dream" in it's name (I can't remember the name either, I think it's Soy Dream but I'm not sure) is supposed to be some of the best tasting.
people relly shouldn't drink milk anyways. agaonst nature. How many other animals do you know of that drink milk after they are weaned from the mother? Then we also drink milk from a different species than our own.
BUT... I drink milk everyday......

I absolutely agree with this post....and to read more about it go to www.milksucks.com Not to mention the fact that cows milk's main purpose is to aid in the weight gain of the calf. I mean, baby cows gain like 200 pounds in just a few weeks, and that's only milk their drinking.
Personally I don't think people should be drinking cow's (or any other type for that matter) milk after baby hood (in which mother's milk is prefered).
Just my opinion of which you can rightfully say is moot.:D

Milk is SO not good for you, and frankly its ad campain is a crock of SH T! Milk has a lot of calcium, yes, but when you rely on a source of calcium that is high in protein they cancel each other out. In other words, milk doesn't provide you with calcium and in the task of processing it, you actually lose calcium. Ever notice that in this country osteoporosis is a problem? Then did you notice that in locations such as Asian countries where practically no dairy is consumed osteoporosis is nearly unheard of?
I didn't get these facts from some wacko hard core vegan animal rights activist, it was discovered by scientists in a very important groundbreaking study called the China Project. ( I think that was the title! ) It studied the diets of the people of China and came up with shocking findings that frankly didn't please the meat and agriculture companies. It found that humans are essentially a vegetarian... vegan... species. All the nutrients that people think you need to get from animals AND milk- are all available in natural plant sources. Hey, they HAVE to be, that's where the animals get them.
Just my pushy two cents>>>
--WaterLilly
PS. The only nutrient that is hard to get when not using animal broducts is b12 which is found in a certain seed (I forget now..) but you could take a suppliment. Other than that, a deficiancy in a varied vegan diet is practically impossible. I don't really like vitamins and suppliments though. They lack phytochemicals and nutrients that whole foods do and often include too high levels of a given nutrient. That's just as, if not more, unhealthy than a lack of! I say, eat well, don't feel yourself artificially and unhealthily. And for heaven's sake! Don't... DON'T ever trust those meat, egg, and dairy commercials. They may taste good sometimes, but there really is NO such thing as a healthy animal product AT ALL!!!

Mmhm. The China Study (do a search on Yahoo! or some other search engine to find the actual details on the subject) showed that if we all stop eating eggs, milk, and meat, assuming we're one of the 7500 Chinese people in the study, we'll have a lower chance of various heart diseases, diabetes, and cancer.
Really makes you wonder how the human race existed for so many thousands of years, especially through those where we depended on meat, eggs, and milk to survive.

Hee hee, we lived just long enough to pass our genes on to the next generation... After that, diseases no longer matter in terms of survival of a species!

Yes if you were drinking as much milk as a calf does, and only those litres of milk in a day but nothing else, especially whole unskimmed unpasteurized milk, you'd probably gain 200lbs a week too.

Ok I take your points.. but ...so how am I supposed to drink my favourite hot drinks which all involve milk? Do you guys ask for Soya milk when you go to a cafe bar or just drink what they give you?
Do you think that giving up milk is really going to make that much of a difference when breathing is even bad for us these days

Good point...everything is bad for you these days....tough call. I'm not totally off dairy...so that choice is yours. I used to work at a health food store and we made lattes and stuff there. People would ask for soy milk and we accomodated. I don't know if they would everywhere.

Thanks Shy ~ But doesnt it make the drinks taste yucky.. I suppose its just a matter of getting used to it.
Have you noticed a big or even small improvement since you stopped with Milk and dairy products?

No, it doesn't make the drink taste bad. Most people cant tell the difference. Unless they are a hard core milk fan.
As far as noticing differences...that would be different for me than you because I'm lactose intolerant. It didn't agree with me in the first place. On thing I can say is this. I've heard it said, and I agree that vegans and nonvegans smell different. To me, nonvegans constantly smell like beef.
Just a thought.

Good question Spirahl.....I don't rightly know. lol
Soy milk in the cereal never bugged me too much...but I certainly can't drink it alone. At least not yet. It's great for cooking/baking with though. I can't tell the difference.
I'm not trying to convert anyone. Hehe, I'm not a Vegan myself...just saying what I know.

Silver Venus,
I haven't had milk to drink in about a year. I'll admit, I have a weakness for cheese, and although I avoid it, I still live at home and don't do the shopping or cooking. Other than the occational cheese or touch of real milk in something I need to cook (When I'm out of soy milk) I've relied on soy milk entirely. I STILL haven't gotten used to drinking plain soy milk straight. I don't even really drink the flavored ones straight, except for coffee soy milk. That's yummy. I think putting ice in flavored milks helps though. See, for me, I notice this powdery texture in soy milks... keeps me from enjoying it plain. And true, I think unless you were raised with it it just wont taste good in some stuff. I made hot cocoa with it and it just wasn't working. I don't mind it on cereal though... it's just sweeter than milk is. I'd suggest trying some strawberry, coffee, or chocolate milks if you haven't already, and don't give up on soy milk. It may not be good plain, but it's a lifesaver when it comes for cooking! I can't think of a recipe where you couldn't, with very little tweaking or sometimes none at all, substitute it for real milk... allowing you to still eat everything you eat now but without the nasty health effects.

Thanks guys! Ive been trying to introduce it to my diet over the weekend ~ in coffee and tea.. and my cereal and now its tatsing a whole lot better :)
Its got quite a strange taste hasnt it! But Im starting to like it! & I got a choclate flavoured soya milkshake (cant remember the brand name) in a cafe on saturday and really liked it :D
Ill keep on trying! ~ Is it good to use in cooking too? like for baking?
I made scramble eggs with it too and with some ketcup it didnt taste too bad ;) but I think Ill stick to normal milk for things like that in future.. my bf didnt appreciate it much!

Well, I have used it for baking. I haven't really had a problem with it. Some will say it isn't rich enough and needs to be tweeked a bit. You really have to do some experimenting on that one. Just find out what works for you....dag, I'm hungry. lol Just talking about eggs is making me want some breakfast. Perhaps I'll partake in some birthday cake. mmmmmm....orange cake with cream cheese frosting.....

I've used it in baking. I just don't treat it any different than I do milk, except in recipes where you know you need the thickness that the fat in milk provides... like in pudding or something. That's the only fixing I can think you'd ever need. Just use a thickener is all.

Being asian and thus having more than the average person's of soy milk I find it delicious. Maybe I'm used to it or something but I truly naturally find it delicious. The first time I had (although I can't remember when) I surely didn't go *yuck* It's yummy :)
