My paternal Grandmother sent me this as an email. She was replying to a mutual friend of ours and was kind enough to send me a copy. It is enough to make your blood run cold when you think about it. I thought that I would share this with you in light of current events to get the perspective of the people who lived through WW2.

-----
I remember when Hitler marched on Czeckoslavakia - I crawled under the washing machine (my secure place when I wanted to get away from the world) and cried. I remember when Pearl Harbor was bombed - and I feared for my father and brother - and we were at war.

Life was never the same again then. I remember my mother being on the Civil Defense Committee and canvassing our town, as mandated, to determine how many spare bedrooms were available if NYC had to be evacuated and where the people could go.

Those days were primitive compared to modern technology. Another thing she did was sit as an airplane spotter. My Dad was more governmentally involved - on the draft board and highway maintenance and planning responsibilities. Lights were to be out at night (called a brown out) to help conceal the coasts by having lights out. Heavy curtains were to be drawn etc. We had air raid drills in school and had to go in the school basement with the heat equipment etc.

I fear man has found the technology to destroy mankind - a few strong survivors in some deep caves will probably be able to start again as in the past. You rather asked what I thought. This is probably more than you anticipated. I'm not optomistic. Red Cross is asking for blood donations, not just for the current emergency but also to prepare for military needs.
Enough comments for now - perhaps too many.
