My hubby and I have been tossing around the idea of doing a cleansing/blessing ceremony or spell on our apartment as part of a New Year's thing.
Does anyone have some good suggestions?

If you do it on new years, you could use the noisemakers liberally in each room along with some sage or something. I've seen a lot of "cleaning" spells that involved ringing bells or banging pots in each room, so why not? :-)

I've done one like that with loud rock music before (White Zombie with a dash of Metallica) _twohorns_
Thankfully all my neighbours were out *celebrating* the New Year and not home. You can't do that sort of thing easily in an apartment!

hmmm--it might depend on what sort of "energy" you were wanting to create. I actually make a smudge using white sage, lavender and patchouli. The sage helps to cleanse the area, and it seems to me like the lavender and patchouli generate a very pleasant, calm energy. A mixture of sandalwood and frankencense incenses (one stick of each in your incense holder should do) will also cleanse your home and create an atmosphere welcoming positive energies or "good spirits" if you don't care for smudges.

Wow....I have tons and tons of house cleansing rituals and spells.
This one is good for setting up protection and cleansing your new home :)
Take equal parts Betany and lavender and blend together in mortar. Charge the mixture and sprinkle in doorways, concentrating on the barrier and chant.
This doorstep with its welcome ways, be guarded by a shield of rays.
To guard this home by day and night, protect it with this door of white.
Let nothing enter not of good, and those within do as they would.
The aura left by herb and spell, will safely seal this entrance well.
Sit or stand before a fire. Look into the flame and Visualize the fire bathing you with glowing light. The fire creates a flaming shimmering sphere around you. Say:
Craft the spell in the fire
Craft it well, weave it higher,
Weave it now for shining flame
None shall come to hurt or maim
None shall pass this fiery wall
None shall pass, no none at all.
And heres a wonderful one by our own Dorothy Morrison :)
Home blessing: (Dorothy Morrison)
Take Sandalwood incense to the front east wall of the house and light it
saying:
"Air with smoke now blow away
Unpleasant energy from this place."
Travel along every wall in the house, and say the chant with each room
you enter. Leave the incense in the centre of the room. Proceeding as
described above, take a white candle to the front south wall. Light the
candle and say:
"Candle flame that flickers bright,
Burn negative energy with your light."
Take a dish of water to the west wall. Sprinkle the water along the walls
and chant:
" Water wash this house and clean
Away all dirt and negativity."
Take a bowl of salt to the north wall. Sprinkle the salt as you walk and
say:
"Salt of Earth, both fertile and pure,
Against negative energy, this house secure".
Stand in the centre of the house, spread your legs slightly and open your
arms as if to embrace the sky. As you do, say:
"God/dess of the home and hearth,
Bless these walls and give them warmth!
Bless the windows, roof and floor!
Bring joy to those who grace my door!
And grant to all who enter here
Ease of sorrow, pain, and fear.
Bring rest and comfort to the tired.
Bring ease to anger - quench it's fire.
Imbue this house with love and light
And laughter, joy, and sunshine, bright!
Make this home a happy place
Where all feel welcome in it's space.
And see that only good befalls
Those who live within these walls."
Let the candle and incense burn out. It is done.

I sometimes make a solution of water, a pinch of salt, and a few drops of lavender essential oil to sponge off doorways, table tops, walls, etc. It cleanses the area and leaves a light scent. Great for seasonal stuff.
