For a while I had been trying to find out about my mothers family online, but could never get past my grandparents. Imagine my suprise when googling my name on a whim I found a website that followed my family all the way to the late 1700s!

I've always known my family was Welsh, but I didn't know where in Wales or anything.

Well, I've found that most of them came from Montgomeryshire, though a lot of brits married into the family. The last names differ between generations but always seem to come back to Griffiths.

I found a picture of the church where my Great-Great Grandparents got married, at Llanwnog Church, and even the names of people related to me who are still living in Wales!

And um...thats the end of my story so far! Everyone in my house is asleep and I just wanted to share my discoveries.

Any other stories about genealogy research?

Genealogy can be fun and fascinating! I have been slowly working on my family tree for about 4 years now. It does have its frustrating times too, that one ancestor that just can't be found or verified. There are a lot of websites that you can do research in that every once in a while I have good luck with.

http://www.familysearch.org/ This is run by the Latter Day Saints and has all kinds of records.

These are sites for England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

If you are interested in some other sites PM me and I would be happy to get them for you!

Cool :)

My grandmother (on my fathers side) has had a familytree thing done professionally. It goes all the way back to the 12th or 13th century. Really interresting reading!

I just decided to start trying to sort this out a couple of days ago, and have back to the mid-1800's or so on my Mom's side of the family- I have to my great-grandparents on my Dad's side, and great-great-grandparents on Mom's.

I know on her side there's a lot of Irish, and I've seen a lot of spots of people with the Skaggs name coming over from Ireland in the early 1700's- so I may not have far to go on that side to see when and where we came over from.

My Dad's side is tougher, because with his parents both in their 80's now, they're doing good to point out who the people in old photos are. I did get my Grandpa's brothers and sisters names, and his parents though, but still have to get Grandma to write hers down- she was one of seven or eight girls. They all also have very distictive names, so once I find a family with a few of them, chances are it will be them! lol (I hope)

The next thing I need to do is start putting approximate dates to these people... that will be hard! But I have an aunt who may have a good portion of the Wilson side done already, so if she can send me what she has, that would help a lot.

I really wish I could track down who my ancestors were. My parents really don't know that much and there are no family records. Their last names are so comon in the chinese list of names you can only get a general idea of where they came from originally not who my ancestors were.

I've managed to find a few cemetary records online that have helped me a little in verifing date of death for uncles, aunts and grandparents. Though I keep putting off writing to my family down south, cause I haven't quite got the nerve.

I had started doing my family's geneology about 5 years ago, starting up where my father left off. One day I was searching through Ancestry.com looking for my grandmothers last name, when to my surprise I found a 'looking for' thread asking if anyone knew the whereabouts of my grandmother! turns out my cousins in Indiana whom I had never met, where doing the same thing. :welcome:
