View Full Version : deep crimson stone?

I hate to post this, but I would like some help in identifying a stone. I searched the internet for days and still can not figure out what my stone is. The stone is a very deep crimson color, almost looks like dark blood. I'm pretty sure it's not jasper though since it doesn't have any orange in the color. It is not a crystal and it is completely opaque. It's polished and on the back seems to have a vein or two. The veins appear to be black or dark gray in color. They almost look like hematite, but I'm not sure. It's a very solid stone and does not flake off at all. It also seems to have a pretty good weight to it for it's size...it seems just right. I have no camera so unfortunately I cannot post a picture of it.
Any ideas as to what this might be? I bought it a few years ago, and it has a hole through it so it can easily be turned into a pendant. I'd love to wear it, I'd just like to know exactly what I'm wearing.

I thought garnet was kind of see through kind of like a crystal. This stone is not see through in the least, and it's not a crystal.
Also, like I mentioned in the thread above, I have no camera or scanner, so I can't post a pic. Sorry. If I can find someone who has one I'll be sure to use it :)

I have a few Garnets that look opaque. But if you put a small bright light, like a pen light or small flash light behind them, you can see a bit of light refract through them. Sometimes only on the edges. If you have already tried this and there is no light then the stone is probably iron based. I'll look in my info and see if I can find more. Hope this helps.

I know Tiger's Eye, and have quite a bit of it. Tiger's Eye was the very first stone I fell in love with as a child. I always thought it was so beautiful :uhhuhuh:
Zookeeper~~~I just tried the bright light test, and nothing got through.
morrigan~~~I looked up tiger iron, but I don't think that it is. Very pretty, but my stone doesn't have all those different bands running through.

Oh, that can most likely be it! I looked at little online, and foundthis (http://www.gsafrica.com/Mookaite.htm) . There are some pics that show the deep red color that I've been talking about, mainly the first few, but I have yet to find some that show the veins. Now to research and find out what properties it has. :thewave:
