I'm supposed to be headed to the E.R. b/c of a sebacious cyst that has gotten very big and painful in the past couple of days. It's right next to my ear on my cheek. If they remove it, what does the surgery involve?

My main question is will I have to be put under (asleep) or will they do it while I'm awake?

I had emergency surgery 2 years ago, it took a little longer than planned & TMALSS I woke up the exact moment they turned off the respirator, -before they pulled the breathing tube out of my throat. Guess what?! -you can't breathe like that! $&%#! -needless to say, someone can mention going under w/ anastesthia(sp?) and I start hyperventilating. I can literally taste fear in the back of my throat just hearing about it. I'm a TOTAL phobic now when it comes to this.

My fear of the unknown is over-powering my good judgement but I can't help it. Please if there's a Doc around, what should I expect? (I know every case is different - but at least I'd have an idea -ya' know?)

I forgot to say how much I would appreciate some insight on this. Like around the world and back - that much at least.
Thanks.

Since you mentioned the ER, I'm not sure if you've even seen a doctor about this yet. If you have, call them and ask to speak to him/her when they have time, leaving a message that you want some details of what the surgery entails, specifically what kind of anethesia they'll be using. If the anesthesia is really the only thing you're concerned about, only ask them about that. You should get a call from the doctor or one of the nurses. When it comes time for the surgery and it's not going to be local anethesia, make sure you mention your past experience. A good surgeon should be helping you through some of the emotional aspects of the surgery as well as the physical aspect.

with some E.D. experience......... if they are doing in the ER , I doubt if you will have general anesthesia........ more than likely local ..... an injection of Lidocaine to numb the entire area ..... which means the sugery will most likely be what is called an I & D.... which means a small incision and drainage of the material in the cyst, cleaning out with an antiseptic or antibiotic , application of topical antibiotic and closure with steri strips , or possibly a small suture or two........but you can call and ask exactly what you just asked here ............and the prep nurse should be able to tell you ...... it is definitely Outpatient Surgery ....... if there are not other involvements ........
