View Full Version : Would you fly?

Ok, please help me out here... I have been planning my trip to Australia (from NY) in December. It has always been a dream of mine to go there. I have a five year old daughter who my mother volunteered to watch so I could go on the trip (too expensive and too long of a trip for her to go with me). This is really the only chance I have to go because an old friend popped up who wants to go with me and has the money, and I received a pretty large bonus from work that will enable me to go.

Now my entire family is telling me I must have lost my mind to even considering getting on a plane since the attacks on NY. They are guilting me by telling me to make arraignments for a place for my daughter to live because I'll probably never see her again. And how dare I leave her without a mother...All this stuff.. (it's killing me)

In my opinion it probably has never been safer to fly because now we have our guard up and we're looking for terrorists...What do you all think?

Although it might be a little(or a lot) scary, now is probably the safest time to fly.;) Just think happy thoughts on the plane.Read a book to keep your mind off it.You may never get this opportunity again.Go for it!!!Do what you feel is right in your heart!:sunny: :shift: :sunny: :shift: :sunny: :shift:

My doctor has a saying, sort of. "you can survive or you can live"
Take the trip. Dont worry about things you have no control of.
If, and I say if something were to happen, it would be like getting hit by lightning. (what are the odds?) To live in fear is a terrible thing and not something that you would want to teach your child.

Bad things happen on the highway, in the bathroom, your yard, etc. etc. Doesnt mean you dont go to work, the bathroom or outside.

Dont let the terrorist dictate your lifestyle, that is what they intended.

Go and have fun! :)

and people who are telling those things are
not helping much in my estimation......
I have friends that are planning to fly to England ......... and other places.....
I would say let some time elapse and see how you feel ........ give healing some time ; it doesnt happen overnight , but ultimately it is YOUR decision....... use your instincts......
I would fly and I may still do so .....

Amora, I think you should do what your heart tells you. If this is a dream of yours, don't let the terrorists win and keep you from going. :) Do what your heart desires and if you go....HAVE FUN!!!!

I'm a flight attendant, and I'm not in the least bit afraid to fly.

But, I'm also not going to let Osama Bin Laden control my life, I think he's done enough damage. No more.

Amora, I am in the same boat as you. We have been planning a trip- it has been booked for a year, to Disney in Dec. And we fly out of Newark too, *shudder.* I am so torn about what to do to. Part of me says You can't live in fear. The other part is nervous to fly, and another part is terrified that Disney could be another target....

My family is trying to do what Swnnie suggests- wait and see. As of now we are going, but who knows how we will feel when it gets closer? All I know is I am going to be needing some valium either way!

Good luck with your decision.

Yes...let your gut guide you. If you get to the airport..and don't feel safe..turn around. If you feel safe..then GO! The truth is..you could just as easily be hit by a car, walking down the street. So do what your heart tells you to do.

I'd do it. EVeryone's on their guard, but no one's flying. Which means not only are you safer because of the awareness, you're not going to be shoved like sardines into the plane. ^_^

I might even buy stock in Airlines ......
now is a good time actually and a patriotic thing to do .........we are going to fly!!!
People used to blow up railroads the trains still ran..................
My father was in the Army AIR FORCE, he flew in big bombers in WW2 ...... flying is in my blood you might say.........I have flown small planes...............I remember a thread somewhere about heroines ........... can you guess AMELIA ...... is one of mine :> no saint but a woman with courage...........
I would get on a plane just to SPITE the terrorists at this point.........of course I would try and sit next to the air marshall but hey .........I would be ON IT!!!
I dearly hope you all get to take your vacations .........

Well i'd go for it, I would think it's probably one of the safest times to get on a plane because security is so tight. But ultimately you should trust your gut feeling about and do what you want to do.

I just flew from Australia to Canada two days ago. I didn't fly into the States because I couldn't get a flight into New York at short notice and it was just easier to fly into Toronto and drive down with my friends. I had a need to be here, though, it isn't a vacation. Still, I wasn't scared. A little uneasy, maybe.

I don't really think you should be frightened, but if you are, then don't go. No reason to make yourself uncomfortable. No one can tell you for sure how safe it is to fly. No one can know that. It's a personal decision for you, based on how you FEEL. Follow your instincts.

I think I would fly now, but I'm not sure I can wait 6 hours to get on a plane. But, it seems to be safer now. I always say when your time comes it comes, it can be in an airplane or driving home or at old age. Hopefully old age:)

Dear Member

The events of the past week have touched us all in different ways and
our thoughts at British Airways remain with all those who have been
affected by the tragedy in the US.

We recognise that these are difficult and uncertain times and want to
reassure you that our priority is to continue to provide the highest
levels of safety, security and service for all our customers and staff.

Additional security measures are now in place on all our flights. We are
sure that you understand the importance of these measures and ask for
your patience as they might add time to your journey.

We have now resumed services to the USA and Canada and hope to return to
full service by September 23rd. Our other services around the world,
with the exception of Islamabad, continue to operate as normal.

We will ensure that regular updates on our operations are available via
our website at http://www.britishairways.com

Thank you for your continued understanding as we make every effort to
get our operation back to normal as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely

Amora, I truly believe that when it's your time to go, it will happen. Your wyrd will find you - whether you're on a plane or an office tower. Don't let other people's fears stop you. With all the heighten security, it's probably the best time.

I think I'd be too scared to, but I definitely think that you should do it if you feel it's right. :)

*hugs* poor loopy.

One thing that I would THINK applies here, as well as coming from Australia to America (which I've done) is that it's A LOT harder to get through security and on to flights that are international versus domestic ( a passport is required for a start). And I have had reports that Australia has really upped it's security to worse than it was before (they expressed concern over a pair of baby nail cutters that an acquaintance had for her baby when she was boarding a flight for England in Sydney), so if Australia is upping their security, I would expect America's to be twice as bad (good -- whatever ;))

Thanks to everyone for your views and well wishes! My gut instinct undoubtedly says to GO!!! I just wanted to know how you all felt about it since everyone else close to me is freaking out over it. Also thanks to Danustouch for that link, I found it very informative!

It's STILL statisticaly about 503,240,301.43 times safer than driving. Your odds of getting mangled go WAY up when you decide to take the roads.

Honestly lately the local news has been showing breeches in security at DFW airport, 2nd or 3rd busiest in the country. But since your flight isn't until Dec, I wouldn't worry. I don't think I would feel safe flying untill the government supplies the security but I don't have to fly anywhere anytime soon so as they say, make up your mind to suit yourself and no one else. IMHO your family is being unreasonable since you don't go till Dec and by then things will be even safer.

Amora, I say go too. One thing I'd like to add though that no one else has really touched on is that you should try to be very sensitive to your family's concerns. If they're THAT worried that they're trying to guilt you into staying, then it must be serious to them. And they wouldn't worry like that if they didn't love you. So even though you should go if it's what you feel is right, you should also be very considerate to them. Try to explain how security has been improved. And if needs be, even write up a will to say what happens if you were to die. Don't let them guilt you into not going, but also don't blow them off. Try to talk with them and explain your situation and feelings in a calm and respectful manner.

I'm not saying that you wouldn't or suggesting that you weren't planning on it. ;) I'm just tossing in my two cents on the prodding of my good friend Justin Case.

And enjoy your trip. :)

The airlines say that now is the safest time to fly. Because of paranoia they are taking many more precautions. Now that DID come from an airline, so it could just be a ploy for business. I don't know how I feel about it. My best friend is on tour right now. I've been thankful that the flying portion of the tour is over. (Even though they've had troubles with the van.) So I can understand where the concern comes from. But she is a strong independant and would get on a plane no matter what if she had to.
That didn't really help any, did it? Sorry.
