Hi! I was wondering, is it cool to use herbs or colors etc. in ways that you can associate them in your own way instead of using a list out of a book? For instance,
to me, lavender and blue mean calmness or relief from stress, but in 3 different books there will be 3 separate things that say
a totally different herb or color.
I like to keep it simple and have a hard time remembering what herb or color or incense etc. is the
correct one for a certain spell.
Also can someone explain to me what "mind triggers" are? thanx!

I say just use whatever feels the most natural and right for you. If it feels right, it can't be wrong. :)

Yup, always uses what feels best to you. There's another thread on the reasoning behind that somewhere, and it goes back to "mind triggers" or "mind keys". :)
Mind keys (or triggers) are whatever triggers your mind to think of your intention - for example, if you believe green reminds you of money, then the colour green is a mind key (or trigger) for money. Whatever makes the most sense for you is what will always work best. So when working any kind of magick even if you find different meanings in books always use your favourite meaning. The reasoning is that mind triggers help you focus on your intent, they activate that little button in your mind to get what you're trying to. Like how the colour pink might click that little button in your mind for love, so that's the mind trigger if you were thinking of working towards finding love.
I hope that made some sense. :)

I believe that the magical properties of the herbs are similar to the medicinal values. Most herbs have many properties therefore many uses. There are also many herbs used for the same thing. Such as hops & chamomile can also be used for calmness & stress relief. So you can think of the books as giving you choices & alternative. In the end, it's your association with it that makes the spell works. For me, getting to know the herbs both magically & medicinally helps me find the right herbs to use.

Thanks Willow Raven. I had been kind of wondering just what 'mind triggers' meant. I had my guesses of course, which were right, but it wasn't something I was sure about. And now I know. :)
And poz, I was thinking more about this last night. I think ultimately you can't go wrong with anything so long as you believe it's the right thing to use. But I also think that some herbs do definately have specific energies to them that could add a little extra umph to certain spells.
Of course the amount added to a spell is probably less than the amount dependant on your belief that you're doing the right thing. So its better to use the 'wrong' herb if it feels right to you than to use the 'right' herb and leave you feeling unsure.
I don't know. Maybe I'm just rambling now. He he he. But anyway, use what you feel is right and it'll never really be wrong.

Here's a thread I started about mind keys and basic spell crafting awhile ago for interest's sake :D - http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4442&highlight=mind+keys
