I went scuba diving recently in the Crystal river, and I could'nt believe what I saw! I seen 8 different manatees, all scared up,
2 with fresh flesh wounds at least 2 feet long. People in their boats(when not aiming for the dive flag LOL)are going way to fast and dont see them. They are not even stopping or reporting injuries. I had tears in my eyes as I wondered how badlly they were hurt.
Also diving on the reerfs in south Florida, I cant even find one single live coralhead on any of the 3 reefs. All the licese plates and charities are not getting it done! Does anyone have a suggestion? I am willing to do something if I had direction as to how. Blessed be!

That is so sad. I wish I knew how to help. I have always loved manatees- they seems to gentle and soulful.
Scary, too about the reefs.

It is aganst the law to touch them, however they come right up to you as if their is a gentle and loving curiosity. They are almost always eating when I see them. They float near the top of the water and almost look like a drifting log when you come upon them. They are very friendly and trusting. They are truly as beutiful as any mammal can be!Thankyou chyssi1 for responding.
Blessed be!

We have the same problem down here with the dugongs (cousins of the manatees). Their numbers are small and their environment, the seagrass palins of northern Australia, is dwindling due to human expansion into the tropical North. Thus more humans equals more water traffic which leads to more injuries and deaths of dugongs by boat propellers. These animals are harmless, friendly and curious which unfortunately probably contributes to their downfall. The only solution I can think of is to ban the use of boat propellers in thedugongs habitat, the seagrass plains. But I don't know how that would work or how it would be policed...........

I hate to see mother natures beauty destroyed by humanity's carelessness. It's so sad that our earth suffers.

:D Sometimes I fantasize that the manatees, as well as a few other animals, have taught themselves how to use fire arms or some other kind of a weapon and use them to defend themselves, and only to defend themselves of course.... I realize that there are both good and bad consequences, but I can dream can't I?

:dis: What makes people think they can treat animals that way? What makes people think they can treat each other that way, too, because it is no worse than how humankind treats eachother. I just don't get this species. Grrr... :scream: But then you see what good we can do. It leaves a stain of hope.
