ok, friends, I have a question for you ^_^
I have heard of something called "string magick," where you tie knots in a piece of string, cord, thread, etc to accomplish certain things magically.
I recently was visiting a special place, and I was nervous and feeling just a tad threatened, and I looked down and saw I was tying a knot in one of the tie strings on my dagger. And I got the weird impression it was to strenthen my shields or add to my saftey or something like that. (there was a spirit there who was being very caring and helpful to me hehe an old friend. I think she suggested that one ^^; )
So what I'm wondering is, have any of you heard of this? Or what it's for?
Or am I just kinda weird-ish and funny? hehehe

I've heard of it, I beleive especially pertaining to the cords given to degreed Wiccans, but I have no idea where I heard of it and I don't know much (if anything more than I've already said) about it. Heh heh heh. I could try to look through my books tonight, but I'm not expecting to find much. Some things are just really arcane. He he he. :)

I have used string magic (or cord magic) on many different occasions, it is a very effective form of magick and you can use it for different purposes :)
It can be adapted in many ways. Sometimes you tie something up in a knot and release as time goes by... it is said that there were witches once who could tie the wind on a string in knots and then gave/sold it to sailors that would release knot by knot everytime they ran out of wind :)
Anyways, you often tie a magickal number of knots, 3,7, 9 etc and the knot making is often accompanied with some rhyme, spell or what ever you wish to call it... One can use strings of different types and colors depending on ones need, and one can also tie things up (like nuts, grains, pieces of paper with things written on it etc) in the knot depending on the purpose... after the knot is done, one can keep it, burn it, or bury it... or simply tie the knots up to release the energy.
One can say that there are two different ways of doing the knot thingy... either as you tie the last knot you release your energy by screaming, or something and really pulling the string hard so that you thigten each knot and releasing energy in that way, or as you have tied the last knot you tie them all up releasing all the energy. :)
Hope this has helped you some, I know of a good page on knot magick, but unfortunatly it is in swedish...

is one of the most common and well known uses of this art to practitioners of magic ..... It is used by Druids .... most structured tradtiions .. and is in almost all of the newbie books as well...... it is so common I would recommend just plugging the term cord magic into any search engine....
Cord, string , or thread magic is related to the ancient art of weaving......almost every culture has some reference to it The FATES were said to sever the thread of your life ........ Native Americans honor Mother Spider as the Weaver of Life........
The first Cord magic I ever did I remember vividly in 1972 I braided a black white and red thread for my "old mans" hat...for safety in travel across country and to keep our connection strong......it worked beautifully ........
Enjoy and explore the world of thread magic is vast .......
We are but a thread in the tapestry of life......

In knot magic, you're capturing the magical energies in a knot. It's a really popular form of folk magic. Many cultures uses a bit of knot magic.
You can use a string, belt, scarf, shoelace, rope, yarn...whatever you have on hand. Hair works too. Yarn is good because you can get it in so many different colours. As you tie each knot, you're securing a bit of energy into that knot. You can visualize your intend or say a few words or rhyme. The total number of knots used represents the final goal. As you're tying each knot, you're also builing the energy to its conclusion. This can also be done this in reverse too. Tie a series of knots & as you untie each knot, think of it as bringing you closer to the conclusion of your spell to release the energies. You can also tie small fetishes to your string to represent different elements of your spell.
