View Full Version : The "Aberzombies"

What is everyone's view on modern teenagers? Especially those that dress "normal", or so some of the little 7th graders say, in Gap, Abercrombie, and PacSun gear. And what about those that dress "abnormal", in Hot Topic, Gadzooks, and D.e.m.o.? Do you think that one of the groups was more prepared for the tragic events that happened? Do you think it doesn't matter what they wear, they're all different? Or do you think that they way the dress, "normal" and "abnormal", is a direct reflection of what they are able to handle as people?
Basically, the former group is the kids that are the "preps", and the latter the "freaks". Does that change you veiw point in any way?
And to teenagers, what group are you in, if any, and do you think that it reflects how you feel and what you are able to digest, if you will? I noticed that one of the groups tends to be a little more naive, because the other group is not as accepted and is treated differently by most, unitentionally or otherwise, and they are not.
Comments and opinions, please.

I don't think that the way someone dresses has anything more to do with the way they handle a situation then does the color of thier hair!! I'm 32 and remember very well the days when I was a teenager. I was one of the "freaks" as they are now so kindly refered to!! Actually back then I was refered to as a Metal Head, then I went through my Punk stage and my brother gave me a mohawk...I miss those days. I never did grow out of that Metal Head thing though...told you Mom!! hehehe! As for my opinion as a teenager I felt that what I had to say wasn't "heard" because of how I chose to dress and look! My peers however, the Preps were regarded as more intellegent responsible. As an adult I, for one try not to group teenagers and feel that ALL of them have valid opinions and issues. I do not think that one group could handle more than the other. But they will react to it differently.

I'm with you on this one Laiste. A persons appearance has nothing to do with how they handle things. It varies from person to person. For each person their is a different way of handling things.

You guys are right. The way you dress or look does not effect your thoughts and opinions...as a teenager, this is one of the things that angers me about the world the most. People seem to believe that the way you dress makes you think differently, which it doesn't.
Perhaps if people sat down to talk to teenagers more often and saw what they were like inside instead of classifying them as something because of the way they look, we wouldn't get so pissed off and probably wouldn't piss everyone else off so much.
If that made any sense...

It made lots of sense. Come on down the list to Pagan Family and answer Ideas I think I may have frightened people a few have read it but no one has yet to voice any opinion.

I agree as well, just checking to see what you all thought. I'm one of the "freaks", i suppose, so i am a little biased in my opinion.

I am considered one of the "freaks", but I hate the stereotype. I don't consider myself goth, but many other people do. I am just ME and that's all that should matter. I know it is human nature to categorize things, but sometimes things like this can cause a lot of hurt. But I am proud to be ME, and if that means I'm proud to be a "freak", so be it! :D

My favorite quote that sorta applies is this:
"While you're laughing at me because I am different, I'm laughing at you because you're all the same."

I'm going to be blunt here...Quit labelling and get on with things! :D
Seriously, life is too effing short to worry about what other people wear. Until you talk to them, they're just going to be that label and stereotype.

I feel you Armie.
Though I have to say one thing about it. At the local gothic/industrial night, the reactions were just as diverse as the reactions were on this message board. And I'm willing to bet there are tons if different "stereotypes" on this board.

If you saw me at school I was the one in the back of the room that was kind of invisable. If you saw me at the mall I was in a leather mini with punk makeup and blue, gold, and silver hair. From miss priss to punk and I am still that type of person.

Kids are kids are kids.
On a side note, every time I see someone wearing a visor, I have this unexplicable urge to punch them, but so far I have managed to resist. So far.
Punks, freaks, jocks, goths, preps, geeks. Like mol says, "Labels".

the way you dress and think are related. It is just more likely the other way around. The way you think determines dress if you have free choice in what you wear.
conformist stick with the crowd.
Independant, make a statement.
cliques, dress for the appropriate clique.
Does it alter how you handle the things that happen in life? yep, because it is how you think that determines a lot of your growth and how you handle emotional issues. Its not the clothes its the person who decides to wear them.
In the schools that I attended, geeks and freaks were the majority, but had no say because they were not the cool involved jocks, cheerleader types. Cool is always a minority or it wouldnt be cool.

I obviously don't fit in any one catagory because my wardrobe is such a mix of "prep" and "freak" its just like, don't even bother...
I mean, is it bad to wear a lace up bodice shirt with flare jeans and beat-up Sketcher skate-style sneakers? LOL...
As I said...don't even bother. Labels on people anymore are pretty much useless with people like me running around. ;)

I don't think clothes or makeup affect thoughts or reactions as much as thoughts and reactions affect clothes and makeup. For instance you don't see a lot of men in power suits on harleys or in leather and tanktops in BMWs. Sure you might be some but it isn't the standard. And even then most people can't be pigeon holed, and labels mean nothing without the meaning that you give them. I spent so much time in highschool wondering why I fit who's label and who's label I should fit that I forgot who I was for awhile. *shrugs*
