I'm in the Canton of the Keep of the Endless Sea, in the Barony of Carillion, East Kingdom, SCA.
I first joined the SCA right around the time I became a Wiccan. About 18 years now.

well i went and took the big step....i went to a newcomers class! yippee!! anyway, i may be going to the unbelted tourney tommorrow...and i'm considering going in my ren fair garb, just for the hell of it....to make at attempt at late period garb anyway...
hehe, there was an old friend of my dad's there from his old work, and he saw my pentacle and was all "blessed be" and i just kinda stood there and looked dumbly at him, cause my parents don't really understand my religion, and it was right in front of them, soooooo, John, if you're out there, sorry! i considered taking it off, cause i figured there might be someone there who would try to start up a conversation with me in front of them, but i forgot!

*ahem* there's just a few things about Samurai Deeper Kyo (historical fiction)...
1. Their geology is startingly accurate, including the mountain profiles. But those, I can't remember offhand what they're called (it's very late) Cyprus-like trees aren't supposed to be around Edo castle. I know they're common shade trees, I can't remember the common English name.. but they're in select areas.
2. I'm not so sure on this, but, the knot on Saizo's sword is wrong. There's specific ones on the ura and omote sides. The tsukamaki is often undistinguishable, but also look for errors in that one too. But very accurate nontheless, and they even have the menuki I think.
3. Hidetada (Benitora) is a... little... taller than that. We've still waiting for the results from whatever committee is working on that. I think they're out to lunch.
My point is, as I quote, "nobody gets it right all the way, and if they did, they'd be rather stinky." This is true, hygiene wasn't the best during those times. So I wonder what the period police thinks of that :)

Period police would consider that as an allowance for health reasons. The SCA is defined as trying to bring the BEST out of the middle ages without all the inconviences. Stinky would be one of those inconviences.
However there aren't any period police in the SCA, only some uptight people worried about being period correct. Those are few and far between and the majority actually don't care if you are wearing a sack. which by the way, is quite period.

I'm active in the SCA, and am a member of the Company of St. Martin based in Summergate (also in Caid, northern San Diego County). Right now, though, I am at the College of St. Brendan (Humboldt State University in Allyshia (in the Kingdom of the West, mundanely including Humboldt County) while going to school. My knight (well, she's only my Adrian Empire knight right now, but the Company is active in SCA and Adria) is still in Summergate. If you ever go to a Summergate unofficial fighter practice, my knight holds the only fighter practice in Summergate at her house with her husband. My name there is Tanja von Hohenstaufen.

You haven't played in Ansteorra. . .(aka Nastyorra). . .I am currently in the Barony of Loch Sollier. . .just south of the Barony of Stargate. . .
My husband is a Ronan Squire. . .his Knight no longer plays
We play when the weather cooperates. . .otherwise it is toooooo durn hot here. . .especially to be period. . .
As for period police, they are the ones who look down their nose at anyone who does not fit their perception of what historically accurate is. . .nevermind the whole anachronism thing. . .
I prefer to think of the SCA as the Society of Consenting Adults. . .after all. . .there is so much tent swapping going on. . .

Coming from Caid, I know a little much about period police. We're known for them, though I haven't personally had too many bad experiences with them (it's known I'm poor and I am trying, but I try because I want to, not because it's necessary). We (the non-period police-types) call SCA, the Society of Compulsive A-holes. They even frown on Japanese and Middle Eastern personas in most of Caid (at least the San Diego area ones), which sucks because my boyfriend might give it a chance if he was able to play a Japanese persona without being looked down at.
Up here in Allyshia, though, it seems to be much more relaxed and allowing for more freedom to explore more cultures (so long as we don't do New World stuff) and don't care about when there was regular exchange between Europe and Japan, and when Middle Easterners may or may not be accepted amongst Europeans. Too bad I'm only here temporarily while I go to school, and my knight isn't up here with me.

Aye, a member here as well. I'm the herald for the shire of Hrafnsfjordr, principality of Oertha (Alaska), Kingdom of the West. My persona is south Indian, my husband's is Romanian. Up here the period police don't bother us much. We're well aware of the society for compulsive a@@holes, but we don't hear from them very often.
