Man peed way out of avalanche

A Slovak man trapped in his car under an avalanche freed himself by drinking 60 bottles of beer and urinating on the snow to melt it.
Rescue teams found Richard Kral drunk and staggering along a mountain path four days after his Audi car was buried in the Slovak Tatra mountains.
He told them that after the avalanche, he had opened his car window and tried to dig his way out.
But as he dug with his hands, he realised the snow would fill his car before he managed to break through.
He had 60 half-litre bottles of beer in his car as he was going on holiday, and after cracking one open to think about the problem he realised he could urinate on the snow to melt it, local media reported.
He said: "I was scooping the snow from above me and packing it down below the window, and then I peed on it to melt it. It was hard and now my kidneys and liver hurt. But I'm glad the beer I took on holiday turned out to be useful and I managed to get out of there."
Parts of Europe have this week been hit by the heaviest snowfalls since 1941, with some places registering more than ten feet of snow in 24 hours.

While that's funny in a morbid kind of way....I can't help but wonder...
Why didn't he pour the beer on the snow to melt it, instead of drinking it all?
(I know, shame on me for suggesting that we waste beer....geez _tsk_ )

Wouldn't he be dead from alcohol poisoning from drinking so much beer? Or can't you get alcohol poisoning from beer?

Odd...
You can get alcohol poisoning from beer...but I think my true question to this is "Why did he have that much beer in the car?"

Thats probably why it took so long to dig out, he had to stagger the beer consumption. Beer would have been cold and hard to melt snow. Plus I guess all that alcohol must have warmed him up. I would have tried to start a fire with all that alcohol using the cigaret lighter, the battery probably still worked under all that snow even if the car wouldn't have gone anywhere.

I think it could be a hoax. The quantities of beer consumed to do such a thing is, well, such a thing would require more beer than I care to even think about consuming :S

I dunno. Beer has alot of calories, it served not only to keep him warm but fed. Corny but man could survive on beer alone for at least a little while.
As for the alcohol content. Maybe it was American beer ;)

Alcohol actually makes oyur body temp go down.....it just makes you think you are warmer....
The alcohol in beer is too diluted to burn, you'd have to distill it first.....

If it was too diluted then your body temp wouldn't be going down as you're not drinking that much alcohol. However you are consuming a large amount of complex carbohydrates, and that does produce heat.
I have gotten beer (budweiser) to light before, but the point is not to use it as fuel but to burn other things in the car and just use the beer as accelerant.

Why do I have doubts about this article??

Actually many people consume much worse continuosly, so I think his liver will survive this little injustice. I think it is quite ingenous and resourseful. He was able to stagger it enough to avoid passing out. I don't think a fire in a car buried in snow would be wise at all. He would have died of carbon monoxide poisoning. If the whole car didn't ignite and blow up. Running the car under all that snow might have also caused excess carbon monoxide to back up and kill him.
Did the article say he actually drank all 60 beers? Or just that he had them in his car?
