View Full Version : MW Calendar Project NEEDS Help with Holiday Info

Ok as some of you know I am starting to prepare a calendar with my husband, as away of making our contribution to helping MW, and so far the art submissions for the calendar are going great.
But What I need help with now is calendars usually have the holidays on them right? We have people from many different walks of life here at MW
So far I have Christian holidays
Pagan Sabbats/esbats
These two sets of holidays I am sure of – oh except if anyone could help me with sabbats etc for the Southern hemisphere that would be great cause I am not totally sure of those.
But what other groups do we have here that have holidays? Do people who follow Astaru (sp?) have set days of celebrations, or how about those who follow a Druids path? What about Jewish holidays? These are just some things that I have been thinking about, and any help that you all can give would be most appreciated.
Thanks
Bran

Perhaps you would want to list the orishas' feast days for those of the Voudoun path. Since some of them correspond to Christian saint's feast days the listings could be a "two-fer" so to speak. Another thought would be to note dates that might be of interest to those of the pagan bent. Not necessarily "serious" ones either, for example:the date of the broadcast of "Bewitched's" first episode, fun things like that.Just a thought......BTW, the calender is a GREAT idea _handclapp

Do you mean like a trivia thing like "this day in history.." thing? That type of stuff would depend on how much room we have on the calendar page and what other stuff is listed for that month to..
Do you know where I could find reliable information with the dates for the orishas' feast days ?
thanks for the suggestions :D

I'd say Jewish holidays...
but you'd need a jewish person for that because the holidays dont go by the calander we all go with, but according to the Jewish calander - so each year the dates change on the regular calander...
hmmm..
give me the year/months you will include in the calander, and i will look up the exact dates of the Jewish Holidays for that year.

When you do the Jewish holidays, it would be neat if you put something like "begins at sundown" on the day before, since the Jewish day starts at sundown the day before. There are a lot of FUN Jewish holidays that never get any "press" ie Tu B'Shvat (New Year for Trees) or Purim, when you're allowed to get so drunk "you don't know if you're cursing Haman or blessing Mordecai". :abanana:

The orisha feast days in Santeria correlate to the saints that they syncretize with. Voodoo is not so easy because it's practiced differently from place to place. The Voodoo of Haiti is different from that of New Orleans which is different from that of NYC, etc. They're all fundamentally the same, but different enough to make a calendar of events not really possible.

In terms of old-religion/pluralist/"pagan" holidays, there is a caldendar on tryskelion.com with historical information and the days for various dieties.

I've been doing a meditation/celebration/activity of the day on my website, and these are a few of the on-line resources I go by:
http://www.tryskelion.com/calendar.html
This Day in History (http://www.historychannel.com/tdih/tdih.jsp?category=leadstory)
Hellenic Month Established per Athens (http://www.numachi.com/~ccount/hmepa/) (See also their Compiled list of Festivals and Sacrifices (http://www.numachi.com/%7Eccount/hmepa/Notes.html))
I also cross-reference several calendars and almanacs, but I'm sure you're doing that already. On days I can't find anything significant enough to come up with something to make an activity or meditation out of, I do a quote of the day to meditate upon. ;)
