Anyone suggest any website providers, that are free and have minimal or no ads?

I'm so sick of this Geocity and Angelfire crap. More and more ads and restrictions all the time. I'd rather not have a page at all than to build with them ;(

http://envy.nu/ offers free hosting with no ads. There aren't many free hosts with no ads out there I'm afraid.

Here's a dir with lots of free hosts to check out - http://www.freewebsiteproviders.com/

And another one -

Merci beaucoup ;)

They might as well not advertise them as free, if they're using like a million ads per page. Your're still paying really, but with annoying as hell banners.

Geocities, IMO, isn't nearly as bad as some....Their ads are normally small at least. Just don't use their Help Desk.
Try out http://www.virtue.nu too.

Hm are you aware that everything you upload to geocities becomes their property and they are thus allowed to use it any way they like (artwork, poetry, anything)?

Doesn't that suck? Who do they think they are?

"7. CONTENT SUBMITTED TO YAHOO GEOCITIES
Yahoo does not claim ownership of the Content you place on your Yahoo GeoCities Site. By submitting Content to Yahoo for inclusion on your Yahoo GeoCities Site, you grant Yahoo the world-wide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, modify, adapt and publish the Content solely for the purpose of displaying, distributing and promoting your Yahoo GeoCities Site on Yahoo's Internet properties. This license exists only for as long as you continue to be a Yahoo GeoCities homesteader and shall be terminated at the time your Yahoo GeoCities Site is terminated. "

Now this has been modified since last I read it. However, "reproduce, modify, adapt and publish the Content solely for the purpose of displaying, distributing and promoting" doesn't indicate what they mean by "reproduce, modify, adapt and publish" or "displaying, distributing and promoting". Basically they could steal your graphics, throw them on a graphic they have to advertise Geocities or Yahoo, and say they are just promoting your site (as a member) et cetera. Also, as you've probably done some graphics work, even tho they say they'll only do it as long as you're a member, what if they "adapt" one of your graphics and feel that they've adapted it so much as to say it can't be identified as yours anymore? You see, they've given themselves a lot of leeway here, and not many people would take them to court for it anyway (except maybe a corporation who could afford the best lawyer, but then why would they have their site on geocities instead of paying for a site)?

Who do they think they are? Well they think they're a free host and I guess they have to pay for the hosting somehow (with all those annoying ads and freedom with stuff uploaded I guess). And since all the hundreds (thousands?) of people who have sites there have agreed to that agreement then they are well within their rights.

Yep, I found the same kind of thing slipped into the MSN communities agreement one day, so I pulled all my posts from there. Insidious isn't it?

Do any of you know good places to get a domain for a good price?? I am currently looking into getting one. I'm searching around for a good amount of space at a fair price. Any recommendations??

If you're seriously looking for a webhost and you want some feedback on quality of service, etc, have a look at

webhostingtalk.com

I host with aletiahosting.com and I am extremely pleased with them so far.
