I am doing some research on Hestia because I want to design a ritual for her.. to invite her to meet me and get to know/understnd each other.. but that is for another post..here is my question/issue...

There isn't much on her.. and what is out there all says the same.. but here is the jist of what I have learned..

*Goddesss of hearth/home
* one of the virgin Goddesses
* the first and last offering made were to her
* possible offerings-sweet wine, 1st fruits, water, oil, yr old cows
* I believe a fire was always kept burning in the home in honor of Hestia
* symbols of her are fires and circles
* she is mainly seen as mild, tender andloving.. but can get angry if proper offerings are not made or if she feel s you are slighting what she holds dear

Am I missing anything major.. what can other tell me about her..or do you know of a website or book that would be useful??

Any help is appreciated!!

She usually is honored or invited first and last, this stemming most likely from the fact that she was born first from Cronus and Rhea, but was freed from Cronus' last, so in a sense she is the first and last born.

She is also one of the three goddesses who is immune to the charms of Aphrodite (the other two being Athene and Artemis).

She relenquished her position voluntarily as one of the twelve Olympians to Dionysus and in turn was granted sovereignty over sacrificial flame and a portion of all sacrifices to the gods.

In regards to the fire being kept burning in the home at all times, this seems to be true for the most part. I'm sure some never performed such a feat for whatever reason, and some may have let it burn out from time to time (again, for whatever reason), but this was a goal since everyone needed to pay her proper respect since the home is a place of importance to all.

She showed great dedication to her virginity and it was only put in jeopardy once, through her intoxication... but I'm a bit sketchy on the details of that exact myth at the moment.

i've heard that She was desired by both Poseidon and Apollo, but swore a great oath never to be married. i never heard the virginity-in-jeopardy story before, please share.

From what I know of the myth she was either sleeping or passed out at a great party ( I tend to tink she was sleeping) and was.. I believe it was
Poseidon who tried to rape her.. when a dokey brayed waking her up and preventing the rape.. I want to say it was at this time that she gave up her seat in Mt. Olympus to go to earth.. she was tired of all the choas up there...

It sounds like I got the basics of her down.. now my task is to design a ritual....

She was desired by many, and both Poseidon and Apollo desired many in turn. Just don't turn any of the gods advances down unless you're a god as well or you're in for it.

It was at a great party that this occurred, and I did forget that some accounts claim her to have been asleep. I still want to say it wasn't Poseidon who tried to put the divine moves on her, but my brain is still fuzzy on the whole myth.

For anyone anyone working with a major Greek goddesses, if you can find a copy:

"Goddesses of Ancient Greece" by Christina Downing. She is a bit jungian, but she is also a solid classics scholar/professor who (raptures :abanana: ) knows how to cite her sources. I believe she had a chapter exporing Hestia.
