View Full Version : Please, sick toddler

My three-year old granddaughter spent the whole night being whiny and cranky and finally slept for about an hour this morning. When she got up we could see that the left side of her face is very, very swollen. Could be a sinus infection (her mommy went to the doctor for that yesterday), could be mumps (?), could be the half ripe banana she insisted on eating last night - although I don't understand why that would only affect one side of her face. Even the inside of her mouth looks swollen and she came to me a little bit ago and told me her mouth feels "yuccy".
Please send energy for this to be something small and easily treated, and for her to feel comfortable, poor baby. And we'd sure like to get some sleep tonight. ;) And her big sister is dancing in the half time show at the basketball game at the high school tonight, we really want to go and watch her. Thanks in advance for any helpful energy sent to my grandbaby, Nove 'Mber.

When we moved almost a year ago we left our family doctor 25 miles away, not a problem most days, but today we have freezing rain falling making the streets and roads treacherous. But the doctor called back and she thinks it's probably the same sinus infection she prescribed meds for her mommy for yesterday. So she called in a prescription for the toddler as well and I just got back from picking those up at the pharmacy. The little one looks so lop-sided that it's cute and pathetic at the same time. Thanks for the energies, please keep 'em coming so they'll kick this infection quickly, and so that the rest of us don't catch it.
:hugz: Thanks for helping.
Oh, the 1st grader is preforming in a dance routine during the half-time show at the high school basketball game this evening. I know her mommy wants to go and see, sure hope she's feeling better by then.

Thanks guys. She has a lump on her jaw that looks like she tucked a ping pong ball in her cheek, but a little lower. She looks like a lop-sided chipmunk. *wry grin* She doesn't seem to have any fever, but she clearly doesn't feel good and is having trouble eating. If her jaw is still this swollen in the morning I will call the doctor again.

Poor little thing. I hope it is just something small. Sinus problems can be tricky but I didn't think they affected the jaw line?

The huge lump is still there today. She had a long nap this morning and acted like she was interested in lunch, but only ate a little. We called the doctor who says to give the antibiotic another day but if she's not better tomorrow then to bring her in. Her mom took her pic with the digital last night, wish I knew how to post it here so you could see the size of the lump. It seems too low for a sinus infection, but it doesn't seem to be mumps and she had all her shots anyway. Thanks for all the caring energy, I will need it in a minute as I try to give her another dose of medicine all by myself. ;)

Has anybody asked about allergies? Perhaps she got a small bug-bit and is having an alergic reaction to it?
Regardless, I hope the little sweety is feeling better soon! :hugz:

Yep, we thought of bug bite but haven't been able to see any marks on her neck or face. Thanks for asking if we had thought about that though.

Could it be a dental problem? I know you'd think it would hurt, but kids that age can be tough as nails sometimes.
Love and hugs and prayers for your whole family. :hugz:

We were at the dentist's office on Monday for her mommy to get a couple of temporary fillings, and the dentist tried to look in her mouth, but she won't open wide for US and he didn't want her first visit to the dentist to become traumatic. I think it's pretty unusual for a baby tooth to become infected isn't it? But if she isn't better tomorrow we may well call the dentist as well as visiting the doctor.

My younger son had a lot of trouble with his baby teeth for a couple years (not what you wanted to hear, I know) but if the doctor thinks you should see the dentist she'll tell you.
Lunacie
February 9th, 2005, 04:43 PM
Yep. Because we know her mommy has an infection the first step is to check with the doctor. If that doesn't give us the answer then we'll check with the dentist. It was traumatic enough for me having my first filling when I was 7 years old. My 'baby' is only 3!

*quiet arrghhh*
Nove was very uncooperative at the doctor's office this morning. What a lot of patience was needed to look into ears and nose and mouth. It doesn't seem to be a sinus infection, her glands are okay so it's not the mumps. Her gums are swollen on that side so the odds are it's tooth related. *sigh* I did NOT want her to have to start dealing with bad teeth at her tender age. I will call around to see if we can get in to see a dentist who specalizes in children's teeth tomorrow. We're doubling the antibiotic to get the infection cleared up first. Poor baby, the left side of her face is so swollen, and it seems the inside is swollen as well. She's having difficulty eating much and we have to keep giving tylenol for pain.
Thanks to all for the suggestions and the energies.

Did they say anything about the lympth nodes?
They swell when they take infection.
I use to get one behind one of my ears when I'd have ear and throat infections.
Hope she's feeling well soon.

We saw the dentist this morning. She would open her mouth for me but not for him. He saw enough to say that she has SEVERAL cavities as well as the one that's abcessed. Because she wouldn't cooperate he couldn't take xrays to be certain. So we will have to have a nurse-anesthetist relax her with a shot, put her to sleep, and monitor her while the dentist works. That will run about a thousand dollars. The dentist's bill will be as much as 4 thousand, could go higher. Her mom and dad make too much money to qualify for government health insurance, but not enough to pay for insurance through work or out of pocket. That means I'll be paying for this out of my retirement fund. As soon as this one goes to school I'll be looking for a full-time job instead of part-time.
I just called the eyeglass shop to talk about my glasses. I'm on the third set of lenses and still have a problem with the right lens. He says to bring them back in and he'll put them under the spectrometer and check them out (last time there was something wrong in the lens). I'll probably have to go back to the doctor who did the eye exam and wrote the prescription to find out what's causing this problem. Meanwhile I'm going nuts trying to cope with a lens that makes everything blurry when I turn my head or move my right eye.

Did I mention that my daughter needs a root canal? I need some dental work done as well. And yesterday I got an email from my sister that says her insurance will no longer pay for the med that's been helping with her back pain. She fears the cancer has spread to her hip bone like it did on Mom.
I know when I stop screaming *quietly* I'm going to start crying.

I don't understand why the PTB sometimes seem to dump on certain people. What possible lesson can be learned from such hardship? Cut it out! You hear? *shouts heavenward*

Her daddy reports that she was able to eat supper last night (she ate lunch pretty well before he got here). Monday we are going to call around to some other dentists and see if someone can take care of this sooner than mid-April.
Meanwhile, I seem to have the same sinus infection my daughter has, and she woke up this morning in so much pain that she could barely get out of bed. She took a bunch of ibuprofen and I drove her to work where the massage therapist worked on her. She still wasn't able to stand up and do hair but she was able to manage to sit down and do a couple of manicures. I think she carries stress in her back the way I've always done. My back used to get that bad before I filed for divorce. ;)

Yes, that 'carrying of stress' can really throw you for a major painful loop.
Good to hear that the baby was able to eat.
Hope all is well soon.

Update on the toddler and her teeth. After a couple of weeks of making phone calls and talking to people and taking her to get a very traumatic second opinion and making even more phone calls... yesterday we took her to the office of an oral surgeon. Wonderful people, very good with small, easily frightened children. They were able to get a wrap-around x-ray with no upset or trauma at all, in fact she enjoyed it. They will be able to pull that tooth with a minimum of anesthetic for a fraction of what the first dentist was going to charge. We need to keep up the search for a dentist to fill some of her cavities, but now we have an x-ray of all the problems so the dentist will be able to give us a realistic estimate of what they will be doing and what it's likely to cost.
Why, though, are surgeons the only folks who seem to be able to give you a shot to put on the edge of sleep, very relaxed, while they do a little work for under $500 (including x-rays)? The first dentist wanted to put her completely under with an anesthetist keeping watch over her and adjusting the anesthesia while they did a couple of hours of work all at once to the tune of $5000. Another dentist said they wrap toddlers in a blanket to immobilize them while they numb their gums and work on the teeth. Crikey, that sounds traumatic if they were going to do that to me and I can understand when they explain what they're going to do! Just imagine being a child with quite limited verbal skills having this done to them. *shudder*
Oh, and the oral surgeon can do the work 3 weeks sooner than the dentist could (March 29th). YAY. http://mysticwicks.com/images/smilies2/clap.gif We still have to keep her on antibiotics until the tooth is pulled, and now she has caught the horrible cold virus that's going around so she's all cranky and miserable again. Poor little bugger. So she's also taking sudafed and tylenol.

March 9th, 2005, 01:59 PM
Hurry up indeed. The folks at this office offered to let us know if there was a cancellation so she can get in sooner, I had to ask them to let us know at the other place. They were talking to us and looking through the calendar and it seems their policy is that the younger the child - the earlier they do the work in the morning (good idea with toddlers and naptime). These folks understand kids. That is such a relief.

:abanana: Yahoo ! The office of the oral surgeon just called to let us know about a cancellation for tomorrow. It means we have to get up an hour earlier than usual and ask a neighbor to watch the 1st grader for an hour before school, but Yippee, they can pull the bad tooth two weeks early!
Please send energy for the little one to sleep through the night:abbed: without wanting anything to eat or drink after midnight (maybe some benedryl? :sleepy: ) and for the surgery and anesthia to be problem-free.

None of us slept well last night and somehow the toddler got hold of an apple this morning and took a bite before her mommy saw her, fortunately it wasn't enough to postpone the surgery. Everything went well, but because her mommy was there to hold her while they gave her the shot to put her almost to sleep she expected mommy to still be there when she woke up... but mommy had to go to work. So we called mommy on the cell phone and let her talk for a minute.
I've always been the one coming out of anesthesia before, I'd never seen someone else following anesthesia and it was kinda scary seeing how dopey the little one was. She was so sure her mommy was just outside in the waiting room and she wanted to get up and go to her but she could barely hold her head up much less walk on her own. By the time we drove home she was becoming more alert and after watching the last half of Sesame Street she was walking (rather unsteadily) and asking for something to eat. YAY !
Thanks to all who sent energy over the last month or so to deal with this and to find a solution quickly. If it had been necessary to wait for the first dentist we'd still be waiting more than another month.
