What do you think this means if anything?

I have had a reoccuring dream in which a tall thin man in a grey coat with a hood walks up to me and tells me that a dark battle is in the near future. He proceeds to tell me that I am to stand on the hill of blood and hold this dark force back until those who have the power bring peace. At this point in the dream I am taken to the top of a hill which seems to be in Italy and I am brandishing a sword and cross. A large dark being standing about 9' with orange eyes, no visible mouth, horns on it's head, and massive leathery wings is engaging me in combat. Always, always I die just as those with the power show up. My dream then goes into black and the man is there again, he says "You are the martyr I apologize, but your death is nessacary for light to conquer and life to continue." I am then staring at myself lying in a coffin holding the sword. At this point I wake up more often than not with chest pain.

It is a truely odd dream and feels so real. I know it may also sound weird, but what do you think? Also what would you do?

I don't feel dreams about death are meaning about dying. I feel dreams about death are more of something of you or part of you or part of your life is ending, hence dying. It means new beginnings as well. Change. That's my take on it. I didn't really vote.

yes to be specific it is a stone celtic cross about 16 in high by 11 in across

Sounds like Lord of the Rings. Did you watch that movie and eat a huge bean burrito before you went to sleep. Just kidding though. Sounds freaky. I would definately go for it. If it meant the LIGHT would win and my kids would survive definately without regret! I also agree that death in dreams means the end of something I think it means new begginings.

Usually death in dreams doesn't indicate physical death, instead it indicates a major change in life, where you end one phase and start another. Perhaps you recently divorced? The monster might be the negativity that built up to the divorce. You dying in battle might indicate that you have to stop living in the past and start a new relationship, with new chances and a fresh outlook on life.

as the others have said this dream would indicate change... my thinking is that the cross in the dream would maybe indicate a change in path/beliefs and the sword as a way of cutting the ties to your old beliefs.. maybe too making such changes forces you to face your dark side or fears...

This may be true, though sometimes I can't help but wish it were real. I dunno it is just this strange feeling I get about dying for a cause.

Maybe I am a bit self centered, but if given a situation like that, I would not give my life for it. My family sure, but strangers? No. I would love to say I would, but heroism and idealism are two different things. And I am not party to blind faith.

I wouldn't worry more about what to do. If the situation ever comes up, I'm sure you'll give it your best shot. I think this is more symbolic about something happening in your life. Maybe you should try to see if any of the images are symbolic of a struggle you are going through?

I do not see their faces I just see them coming before I fall, about a week after my father died. The dreams have not changed except the death gets more violent when I have had a bad day or am stressed.

Hummmmm i had to think about that one for a minute,, as i pondered on it though ,, i voted give up my life for others to live,,, as i feel i have lived my life be it as it was,,, although it wasnt all great ,, it all wasnt so bad to ,, Truthfully I am ready to get on out of this life and have my next try at it come back as what ever i might come back as ,,,lol,,

as for your dream i am no dream expert...
My thoughts on it though are that you are haven troubles in some area of your life you are battling on the inner you ,,, and mabe it comes out in dreams this way when you are working on someting or haven troubles ,,, anyways ,, that is just my guess in the dark at it ,,,,
