View Full Version : Tarot Deck Question

A while ago a friend of mine told me that it was improper to purcahse a deck of tarot cards for yourself, but that someone who loves you should give them to you as a gift and that it would attach their positive energy towards you to the deck.
How true is that?
I'd love my own deck of decent cards, but I don't want to go polling around to my friends saying "Oh wow, I'd love that tarot deck, but I don't want to buy them because of bad Mojo!" I prefer to let people get me gifts that come from their heart, not from me asking them for it...(or even hinting at it!)

In all practicality, it just doesn't work that way, unfortunately. You can expect to get maybe the odd special deck or two that way during your lifetime, but when you really want a deck... Well, there it is, you have to go after it yourself. If I had waited around for presents (and who from??), I wouldn't have any decks!!

That's what I was thinking!
I mean, what if I see one I really like, and I hint around about it to everyone I can... and they don't get it for me or it's sold out, what the heck am I gonna do!
I did, though, buy this particular friend a really nice deck and velvet pouch for it for the Holidays year before last, and infused it with as much good thoughts as I could...
.....and she hasn't picked it up since.
Sad. Heh.

honestly, some of the decks that were given to me don't generally work very well for me, while the decks i bought for myself tend to work the best. do what you feel comfortable with... i think because i picked them out, their energies appealed to me, and so they work well with me.

I have one deck that was given to me the rest I got myself. I get good results from them all. It's to do with the energy you put into it and if you pick one you really like you are going to put plenty of energy into it

Nuh-uh, don't wait. It is extremely difficult to explain your tastes to a person, even if that person is someone you have known your entire life and have a very unique bond with (my mother for example). If I had waited for her to buy me decks, well to date I would have numerous ones that I absolutely want to puke when looking at (Osho Zen and Rider-Waite to name a few). She comprehends my taste in things, but when purchasing a tool where each card is a key to the proverbial door that is your subconscious no one will be more suited to select the proper deck than you.

Well, you could take the ADVICE of your friends and consider THAT the gift! And then get a deck that a friend recommends!
Like, I always recommend the Whimsical Tarot! Cuz quite simply I think it's THE BEST DECK out there! And IF I were buying a deck for you, it would have to be that one! http://mysticwicks.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
And you most certainly can consider me your friend! And then you also have the advice of the other people who've posted in this thread whom I'm sure can also be considered friends!
So there ya go! ::grins::

Like everyone else here I tend to buy my own tarot decks and look through the cards and pick decks that really speak to me. I have only had one deck bought for me (one I do really like) and I have probably between 20-30 decks although I only use 3 or so at the moment.
Go for it and buy your own :)

The two decks I love and use the most (Rider Waite and Robin Wood) are decks I bought for myself. My other decks (Celtic Dragon, Aleister Crowly and Osho Zen) were given to me, but they don't really rub me the right way.... so, in my case it is the opposite that goes.
I say- if a deck calls out to you- get out your wallet!

This thing about waiting for someone to give you a deck is a total myth. Who came up with that anyway?
Only you will know what deck will work best with your own personal energy; it's a very intimate, personal connection. The same goes for pendulums or any other divination tool. Even the people closest to you emotionally will get it wrong 99% of the time.
Choose your own tools yourself and forget about silly myths and made up rules. :)

Well, I don't know......I received one deck as a gift, and I bought my other three...and the one that was given to me is just the one I use the most. Strange...

I would never have gotten ANY tarot decks if I waited for someone else.
Until I was...15 or so, I was surrounded by very very Christian people, the type who believe that tarot is of the devil, yadda yadda yadda.
After that...well, I think it'd be kinda rude if I went up to one of my friends and said "Hey, buy me that tarot deck as a gift, okay."
I can barely ask for Christmas presents, I don't think I'd have an easy time pressuring someone into buying me a particular deck XD
What's more, back in highschool, friends are always broke. How many of us worked?
When it got to college, well, I kinda just went to class and went home. I DID give away a deck though, and here's why:
I bought it because I THOUGHT I would like it. Didn't look at the cards, just picked up the box (it came with a book, that's why) and bought it. Didn't click with me, didn't click with me, didn't click with me.
One day at college I decided to stay in the cafeteria. I pulled out the deck and started looking through it, because I was determined to learn something. Someone I'd met in class said "Oh my god, that deck is GORGEOUS." I let him look through it, and he really felt a connection.
That deck is his now.
And when you think about just that - I can barely find a deck for myself that works - what makes you think that a friend could find one that fit me perfectly?
Mojo smojo.
Do what works for you.
If you're lucky enough to have friends who are willing to spend money on you, why not? Just have them include a reciept ;) in case it doesn't work for you.

I've bought most of my decks myself. Those are the ones I use too.
One deck that a friend gave me she knew I wanted because we always go shopping together and we were looking at decks. I love that deck, and it is one I really wanted. I still have a hard time with it though because it is so different.
Bottom line, if you like it and connect with it... buy it.
OH and August First...It's called addiction. I'm on my way too...just got the Gothic Tarot today!!!! (paid for by me, btw)
