We all make things for lots of different reasons.........to 'make pretty', to give as gifts, to celebrate a holidy......

When making things, does anyone use a ritual/blessing before they start? Or as they work? Does anyone make things deliberately as a magical item for a purpose? What about ritual items themselves? Way long time ago, there were patron deities of spinning, weaving, etc. Does anyone look back to these?

Maggie

For me, the ritual is in the making of any crafts I do. Especially if I'm knitting. I think of the person who will be recieving the gift. I think of how as I'm knitting, the feel of the wool, the needles, the energies I want this gift to carry. It's like I'm weaving the spell into each garment as I knit. I love knitting in rounds especially. The continuous spiral of the knitting and how it compares with the continuous circle of the solar year. Each stitch strengthening the garment, strengthening the spell. I do more knitting in the fall & winter...no gardening to do.

There is a beautiful book called "The Knitting Goddess". The projects are simple & quick and good for a beginner and advance knitters. But the stories are wonderful. The author has highlighted a different goddess for each of the projects. When I read the book, I felt like she has described the exact reason why I knit.

I just started spinning last year. I'm hoping to find more time this winter. I love the experience of it.

I've made several projects from the Knitting Goddess, I love that book!!!! My favorite so far came from a modification of the baby blanket. I made it as a representation of Brigid's fire with lots of novelty yarns. I started in the center with fuzzy orange and yellow, then as I moved out I changed to different shades of yellow. The last few rows are in browns for the logs--including the first usable yarn I ever spun!!

When I make anything, it's usually for a friend or family member, so that just choosing to make it does that!

I've had some odd experiences with making quilts. I tend to make things a lot, no one else in my family is very 'crafty' so that I get asked or "Gee, I'd love to have one of those" rather often. When I 'have' to make a quilt, the pattern won't leave my head until the thing is done and delivered. Fortunately this doesn't happen often...........
