Ball-Bhreac Ròn
October 2nd, 2001, 01:40 PM
ok, I was just wondering what everyone's names mean.....???
I'll start with me.
Ball-Bhreac Ron is Scottish Gaelic for 'dappled seal', and its pronounced 'bale-vreach rown'. I chose it because i :heartthro Gaelic, and spend most of my hols in Scotland. The actual meaning of the words is very personal and significant to me, and has to do with my self-initiation ceremony.
Just wondering about all these weird and wonderful names that some people have.....?
Shy Hawk
October 2nd, 2001, 05:10 PM
I think there might be a thread on this someways back, but because I'm sorta lazy I'll just restate.
ShyHawk comes from a dream. I asked for some guidance on chosing a name for myself. That night I had a dream about a Hawk. It sat on a wire hopelessly out of reach and yet I wanted it to come to me. It spoke in my head and told me that it wouldn't come to me until I removed myself from distraction.
When I looked around I realized that I was surrounded by many people...mostly old friends, being obnoxious and talking loud, acting stupid.
So...it was soon after that I moved quite a distance aways from where I used to live. And, the Hawk was never shy of me again. So...the name is a reminder to stay focused...not get distracted by meaningless things.
~Shy
PS It suits me well. I am very shy, and I resemble some characteristics of the Hawk.

Myst

Willow is known as the Witch's tree, and represents spirituality, mystery, femininity, and magick, and is also associated with my matron, Hekate. Raven is a totem animal of many - he represents a messenger, a guide, a mysterious watcher. I love the imagery of the Raven, and came up with that part in a moment when I realized the name Willow was already taken at MW :)

maythen
October 2nd, 2001, 06:30 PM
I read somewhere that the Anglo-Saxons of old called chamomile maythen. Chamomile is my favorite herb rightnow. It looks fragile but is actually pretty tough. It must be because it survived my gardening attempts.
Sora
October 2nd, 2001, 06:34 PM
Long story behind this 'un. I've used this name, Sora, on the online community for years. Mostly in a particular chat community, which I am so very close too. Anyways, I'm not one-hundred percently sure why I chose it in the begining. I just like the way it sounds. So I'll leave it like that.
Amora
October 2nd, 2001, 09:36 PM
came to me in a meditation. The way I realized I was a witch in the first place was when I read my first book on the subject. I had always had a fascination with the metaphysical and had other things happen to me that guided me to where I am now. But the first book I read was Green Witchcraft by Ann Moura and I had my revelation. I said Wow, I'm living this already... When I asked for a name I got Amora, combination of Ann Moura. And of course it sounds like :heartthro

I write stories and my name comes from the main character of one of my books...(no unfortunately I haven't finished it yet, so it's not published or anything.) But she's a wizard and everything, and I kinda modeled her after myself. The name itself was just kinda made up when I was a kid...it's always seemed to belong to me in a way, and so I use it as my craft name.

Mine comes from a song that has very special meaning to me. Lady Starlight, by the Scorpians. I have a thing for changing the spelling of things. So I usually sign as Starlite. :heartthro
loopy

Beetles ( my sort-of Craft name for now) can be beautiful or ugly. They have prickly little thing arms, are surprisingly strong and hard to kill. A type of beetle is the dung beetle-- I wanted something of the Anti-Fluff to keep me grounded. :)
Loopy-- like Poopy (dung beetle), but with an L. No, I made that up. I'm just weird. Loopy means kinda "out there" and I was just choosing a member name, so I figured *shrug* what the hey. :)
Laiste

Laiste, Moons' Daughter
From The Faeries Oracle by Brian Froud. Faeries are my obsession. So I wanted a name to reflect my passion.

GoddessofWisdom
October 3rd, 2001, 01:16 PM
I chose Goddess of Wisdom because I feel drawn to the greek Goddess Athena (goddess of wisdom)
It is said that Athena was born from the head of Zeus, the chief Olympian god. Zeus had a headache which was growing worse and worse until he finally had the craftsman god, Hephaestus, split his head open with an axe, and out sprang Athena, fully grown and in full armor. This sounds like a rather silly myth, but symbolically this shows the goddess of wisdom coming from the head of the chief god. Some of the more practical Greeks decided that Zeus had swallowed his first wife Metis (a Titan goddess of wisdom) and she had given birth to Athena within Zeus. Athena then moved to Zeus's head in order to make her grand entrance.
Either way it's a most interesting myth;)

The reason Zeus swallowed Athena's mother was to prevent her birth. It was foretold that her child by Zeus would overthrow him as he did his father. He sought to prevent this and Athena was born anyway, outsmarting him, out of his head to symbolize wisdom.
Spirahl

I have always been attracted to spiral symbols and they represent the motion of the cosmos, cycles of death and rebirth, and the snake associated with wisdom. I added the 'h' so the name would match my birth number, and I felt I'd do better with an 8value number. Also, I just like varied spellings.

Something about Mari (http://xomusic.audio-stream.net/mari/mari.html)
Mooncrow
October 3rd, 2001, 02:06 PM
The name comes from a cheap paperback novel I read when I was a senior in high school, but since becoming a Witch, I have adopted the name for my dedication to the Craft (Moon) and the Crow, symbolic of wisdom and mischeviousness ;)

Chose it (except for the number) from a book or set of books by Anne McAffrey.(hope I spelled her name right.)
hurray for Anne McCaffrey and dragons! :fpraiseyo
my name on mw is from the welsh words for "queen" and "dragon", which i rammed together without regard or awareness of welsh grammar. as for a public craft name, just "dragon".

To sum it up briefly and easily I used a numerology method to create my name.
Raven: My totem/power animal. Black is one of my three favorite colors (the other two being silver and purple), and I have always adored flying creatures, especially birds. I feel the raven is also the animal I most identify with, being very intelligent, cunning, resourceful, sometimes full of mischief, and sometimes aloof.
Wind: To represent my affinity for the element of air. I have also long since had great success with wind magick of all kinds. From raising and calming the actual winds, to using them in my other practices.
Song: Capitalized to symbolize its significance being as important as wind. I feel words and music carry much force and energy behind them, with song being the hybrid of the two. I also adore to sing and have used my voice in many practices over the years, from protection to seduction.
On another note, SugarMags, Starlite is the name of Rainbow Brite's horse, and Rainbow Brite is my favorite cartoon of all time, so hooray for Starlite! :T

Hawk Shadowsoul
September 19th, 2003, 11:42 PM
During a Vision Quest the Hawk came to me and allowed me to see through his eyes as we flew togetherthrough a pristine and different world and time. He has taught me many things and has promised to teach me many more things. While still in my vision quest the Hawk named me as his brother. Hence the name Hawk Shadowsoul. Translated from their language, Shadowsoul means Brother. My name means Brother in Spirit to Hawks.
