Totem animals?

Ok I think my totem animal is an eagle, but I'm not sure. I don't quite know what totem animals are, a lot of people have given me contradicting information.

Your totem animal can be the totem you were given at birth, one who came to you as you have developed or depending on what faith you folllow they can be there for a myriad of reaons.

When I was very young my totem was the coyote, I wasn't born with it, but by 8 I had developed a very deep relationship there. This totem was reinforced for me by a Yakima Indian Tribal Leader. When I was 21 my totem became the dragon and the dragon has stayed with me though my transition from maiden to mother. This totem had to bite me in the butt for me to see it.

My new totems, or guardians actually are the dragon, the goose, the swallow and the stag. Those I share with Dragon Lady of Air and they were given to us within a sacred space.

I'm of the mind you don't pick them, they pick you, or your life moves in a direction where your totem becomes clear. I think you just know when you know. Let it come to you.
