I took him in to see his peds and she thought it was acid reflex, all of his symptoms were dead on, squeeking, back arching, losing his breath, gasping for air.
She said that the body automatically protects itself, his squeeking is caused when the formula comes back up, his airway automatically closes so that he dosent choke on it.

We went for an upper G.I. today to make sure that was the cause and not something else like his esophogus. They gave him some weird stuff....barium(sp?) It was thick and white, it made them able to see it actually going down. We watched on screen his whole insides working, it was quite amazing. Everything went down great, so no problems there.
Than we had to wait and continue every have hr after to see if it was coming back up.
The first half hr it didnt but the next was plain as day. The film showed it, so we went back and put it up on the screen again and yep, it was climbing back up all the way to the top of his throat.

So now they gave us a sheet on how to lay him at night....upright...and have him upright for 30 min after every feeding and feed him less and space more hrs between feeding.

Also put him on zantac to help with the acid.So i pray now everyhting will be okay and that it will go away before hes a toddler. :hahugh:

Im relieved it not anything severe and hope his breathing becomes better especially at night.............keeping my fingers crossed............:)

Skye, I am so glad for you that this has been diagnosed and its not something more serious. Good for you, sticking with your mother's instinct something was wrong!

Our little girl does the squeaking and back arching a lot too. I hope there is no problem like acid reflux. And we always lie her on her back. I am scared to lay her on her tummy because she always buries her face in the blanket whenever we do put her on her tummy to play. I'm afraid she'd suffocate in her sleep.

If a baby does have acide reflux what is usually done for it?

Sometimes nothing, if it isnt severe, but sometimes they are put on a medicine to reduce their stomache acid. If she isnt having problems with it, I would say its probably best to let your doctor know but leave well enough alone.

i hope it resolves fast for him.when i had to have my daughter elevated i propped her on a big fabric covered bean bag during the day and on pillows at night i slept next to her i'm a very light sleeper.especially with breathing issues i go in hyper awareness mode.makes a shaky mom lol.my daughter had a bad stomach virus once and when the acid splashed up her eyes would roll up and over in response.yeah we had a great time at the children's hospital with tests barium all that.they thought she was having seizures.

I would def go to your pedatrition, she disgnosed it as acid reflux and made an apt right away for an upper GI the very next day. She said that thats the best test because they can see if its reflux, esophogus,or lower intestine problems. How old is your babe?
It can happen form birth on, some go away and others have it as toddlers. A women who was there the same day had a 10 month old who could eat reg food, only jar because hed choke or puke up and his diagnosis was the same thing.
It could also be any of the other things that i mentioned so its good to get it checked out asap.

Lay her upright, either in a swing, or bouncy but make sure shes not having pressure on her tummy as well. I bent my bouncy down further so hes not sitting directly up.Keep her diaper loose as well that helps with the pressure.
Also keep her upright for 30 min after feeding this will help keep it down. He never spit up so we had no idea thats what it was, it just went to the top and hed swallow it.
Try not to feed her as much, and more frequently. Like for him he usually took 4 ounces to fill him up now we give him 2 every 1 1/2 instead of 4 every 2 to 3 hrs.

At night i use my bassinet and lay the whole thing on a pillow so that its slanted up on top.
Has helped alot at night, he hasnt gasped for air since we started these things.

hope this helps and your babe is okay:)
keep us posted k :)

Thank you for the advice! Our baby is 7 weeks old. I didn't suspect she might have acid reflux before, but when I read your symptoms it kind of set off an alarm. At her last appointment I asked about her squeaky noises (as a new parent I just thought they were cute baby noises until I noticed that she did them everytime after she ate especially if she was lying flat after being burped). He told me the same thing your dr. did... about the milk coming back up and the throat kind of closing up as a defense mechanism.

She has another appointment in about a week in a half, I can ask about the rest then.

Thanks again! :vanish:

Just a thought... I had heard at one point in time that acid reflux is actually caused by the stomache not producing enough acid to digest so it forced the food back up. When I had heard it, (tv show I think) they were saying that increasing the acid content of the stomache (a teaspoon of vinagar) would stop the pain.

Has anyone else heard about this as a homeopathic remedy? (I won't even pretend to guess on what adding vinagar to a infant's diet would do.. but it may be something worth looking into.)

i had to raise up the matress of my sons bassinet so it wasnt totally flat.. i also layed him on his side and put blankets on either side of him so he didnt roll onto his tummy.. he got better when i put him on a special reflux formula it was thicker and didnt come up as much..my son is 7 and still has problems if he eats things that are too acidic (orange juice is the worst) or spicy..
my daughter has the same problems as my son just not as bad so i have done the same thing with her now too..

someone said in a thread in here that vinegar was a good cure for heartburn when your pregnant so i guess if it works for an adult it would work for a baby too.. just give a smaller amount . it would pay to check with the dr first though to be on the safe side i dont know how it would effect a baby..
