i gave a guy in my art class a tarot deck because he had mentioned
his interest in the subject.

he asked me if it was part of any religion or if it was for witches?
he looked uncomfortable.

i explained what it was and added that he didn't have to take them if he
didn't want them. he said no, he'd keep them.

i felt annoyed. when will the world wake up from this fear of tarot???

i thought living out west in a big city that the stigma of tarot=witchy=evil
would be absent, but no, it's here too

what is the big deal.

heck, no one ever gave me a pack of cards before. oh well, maybe he'll
enjoy it...if not i hope he gives them back so i can givee them to someone else.

its sad really... really sweet you did it... but people are still afraid of them... because there taught there evil and have only ever been exposed to more negative things when it comes to our ways...

I beg to disagree that Tarot is really related to a religion or that it is for witches.. I guess this statement knocked him off.. :(

Just my 2 cents.. I mean well, but I am finding it difficult to digest this statement.. :(

HE ASKED ME if tarot was part of a religion or a 'witch' thing.

I told him no and went on to explain the history of tarot ect.

it bothered me that he acted all interested in tarot
last week yet today when I gave him a deck he was like ooohhh...are these evil
maybe he wasn't really into learning tarot like he let on.

maen what cha say,,,say whatcha mean...and we dont gotta problem

although tarot is not linked to religion, people associate it with witchcraft for a few reasons, one of them being simply that they think tarot is related to the devil, and they also associate witchcraft with the devil. its really as simple as that. and i think a lot of people who practice witchcraft, or are pagan or whatever, use tarot cards because we don't see them as harmful, but as helpful.. anyways, unless this guy is really superstitious, the gift will probably spark some curiousity in him, and he might at least flip through them, he might even give them a try.

ohh, i want to add my to cents.

Let them think what they want. We know the truth about the Tarot, we know the depth that they go. If they don't believe you at least you tried to enlighten them.

But this is my motto for most things.

hmmmm...
Well, he could have been a bit suprised by the gift, but honestly, if he'd have thought them terribly 'evil' he'd not have touched them, much left carried them away with him.

Give him a little while, either he'll pick them up and play with them, and get a feel of them, or he'll bring them back.

It'll be ok.

Yeah I am sometmes surprised too! I mean I live in a very liberal, crunchy west coast college town. I bring my tarot cards to work with me all the time and give co workers readings. Most times it's their first reading ever... they are very excited! One day I had my cards out and this guy (who I think is an idiot anyway) says " oh... aren't those cards... like evil or something?" Another co worker guy quickly said NO not all. Whats your issue? hehehe

Also I gave a pretty deck to my 14 year old neice. She and my sister were admiring it. My sister (of all people) asks "Is this the only tarot deck.... or are there others? Do they all look like this?" It was Tarot of the Moon Garden. Anyway, I realized that most people do not know much about the cards.

But what a great way to help educate them!
