I'm wondering...
Is there any type of spell that would give the feeling, or essence of a canine being with me, and for protection?

You mean... Summon your animal guide?

I have an additional question to go with this post ok. When are we/people most vulnerable? Say by spirits or spells cast on us? When we are asleep?

I'm guessing you mean like a sentry spell or a watchdog spell?

Are you speaking of the spirit of canines in general, as a sort of guardian to watch over and protect you?
If so, I would acquire a fetish of some sort. Could be a statue, a picture of a canine, even make a small figurine out of sculpey clay or create a collage out of your favorite dogs, whether they are dogs that simply make you feel safe (not the ones that make you go "Awww!") or ones you have owned over the years.
If it is a specific species of canine that appeals to you most, naturally you'd want to acquire a fetish that represents that particular species.
After you have acquired it, or created it as the case may be, cleanse it thoroughly and then consecrate it-asking that the spirit of the canine (in general if that's the case or of the specific species if that is the case) watch over you through the idol. Now, with fetishes such as these you'll need to get something very small if you want to carry it with you at all times-a charm or pendant, perhaps, or a small photograph. Otherwise if it's too large you would probably do better off leaving it in a specific area. I happen to have a fairly large statue of an armadillo that is a perfect example of this, that watches over my bedroom/ritual space and protects it.
You most definitely will not want to ignore the spirit once things are set in motion. Try speaking to it daily or at the very least thanking it for its presence. Anoint it with an oil or oil blend that reminds you of the animal in question or that is protective in nature if you wish in order to feed and nourish the spirit. When it boils down to it, the most important part of this procedure is simply not to forget about the spirit. If you do it will eventually wander away.

Thank you.

Yes, that's what I mean.
I've had a white wolf come to me, had considered that, but other than searching for a pic online, I figured something from a dog might be easier to work with.
I need something that would discourage someone who has a great fear of canines, from harming me or my children.

Adding to what Aidron said, a good way to honor your guide might be to purchase food, dog supplies, leave them in front of the statue for a short time, then donate them to an animal shelter, or give to a needy family who has a pet.

Smart plan. I've often used people's actual fears and allergies (such as someone being allergic to ginger or garlic) to repel and banish them over the years. I've found that it in fact triples the effectiveness of workings such as this.
In this case, bigger and wilder is better. Whatever route you take, I would go with the largest canine you know of (even if they are now extinct) and the wilder ones will have more ferocity to back up their protective energy. Wolves are a good choice, so are dobermans and rockwilers. There are even a few prehistoric canines that if you had seen the features on the Discovery Channel I had, would probably give you the chills.
Another method you could apply is something I used a long time ago. I'd have to go through several things to find the actual ritual, but the basis of it is to envision yourself surrounded by the spirit (in this case, canine spirit) as if they are performing a protective circle around you. How many there are is up to you. I would select three since that number has such significance to me, or seven since it is the number of action and often individuality (calling on your need for individual protection and this being a war on more of an individual level).
You could even try shapeshifting if you wish, envisioning yourself taking on canine features or as an actual canine-this is particularly useful for a quick-fix if the person happens to be around you and causing you grief.

Yeah, it makes sense to me, and I've seen this guy go nuts, and run from big dogs, so it seems workable, and the first thought that came to me, when considering this situation.

If you happen to come across this, let me know, you can pm me if you like, or post here.
I'll check out the shapeshifting, looking for links right now.
This sounds like an interesting back up, I think. Maybe, even a good idea to teach the kids to do this as well.
Thanks ya'll.

Can't find the actual ritual, and searching my old grimoire (even with the fact that I'm re-writing everything at the moment) would probably produce the notes I need two months from now. :tongueout
I do, however, have better luck recalling my Fiery Triangle of Protection, however. The basis being to sit in an upright triangle of blood red or black candles (an upright triangle being the alchemical glyph of elemental fire). Elaborate on it with chanting, visualization, and so forth. If you want to go the canine route, just envision them rising out of the candle flames to further elaborate on the glyph, or in between the candles. You could use other glyph designs for your candles, but the alchemical ones are so easy to explain without a picture as opposed to say the glyph of Saturn.
