I know I don't usually post in Critter Chat, but I just had to share this. I don't know if any of you have seen the movie Napoleon Dynamite, but at one point, Napoleon says his favorite animal is a liger, which he calls a "lion/tiger mix bred for its skills in magic." I immediately thought it sounded like a cool fantasy animal. However...
Magic aside, ligers do, in fact, exist! And they are the most awesome thing ever! They're the largest cats on earth, and they've never been found in the wild, though it is a possibility. They can swim really well, too, and look really suave and clever doing it. I want one! It could be my giant pointy preconsul.
OMFG DUDES LIGERS!!!!! (http://www.sierrasafarizoo.com/animals/liger.htm)

I saw one on TV on some talk show. It was really, really big. My friend loves NP, and he couldn't believe that they were actually real either.

I wonder if, like Napoleon said, they really do have 1337 m4g1ck sk1llz.

Hmm, that picture almost looks like photoshop.
I have heard of these animals.
The show I saw them on called them 'ligrons' !
Either way they are very rare considering where the tigers and loins are native to.
The one I saw was concieved in a zoo.

There used to be a stuffed one at the Salt Lake City zoo (it had lived there)... haven't been there in about 15 years, tho... can't say if it's still on display or not... if it was a fake, it was a really good one...

I remember my teacher talking about these when I was in high school (grad of '94) she said that lions and tigers can produce young, usually it's artificial insemination, and the offspring that are born from the union can't reproduce.

they have one here in IL somewhere at a small zoo. My mom and brother went to see it. I also saw that one on a TV show. It was very pretty and HUGE. My kind of kitty.

The main reason they don't exist in the wild is cause tigers live mostly in Asia and lions live mostly in africa.

Wow, neat coincidence for me, as I had just watched "Napoleon Dynamite" last night...and was wondering about them, but I had already forgotten that I meant to look up some info on the liger, so thanks for posting this thread!!!
:yourock:
Also, I noticed that on that site they said something about tigon/liger offspring resulting in a female tig-liger. I wonder if they keep crossing all those animals, will they finally come up with Tigger? I'm curious as to whether or not they actually do bounce, as the one from Winnie the Pooh does...
