I bought my first Besom Broom this week and have started to decorate it. Now question I am going to have my broom in the kitchen as I am a Hearth Witch and never having had a besom broom before I wondered how others have decorated and use their brooms.
I know that some have given their brooms a name how do you go about choosing a name for a broom?

Just curious - why do you call it a besom broom? I thought (and my dictionary agrees) that besom simply meant a twiggy broom in Middle English.
As for your question I can't be of much help. I use a kitchen broom to phyically and metaphorically sweep an area before a ritual (a vacuum serves the same purpose on carpet), but the only time I've used a besom was when I got handfasted (the whole wedding party jumped one for luck on the way out).

I call it a besom broom because that is what it is a besom a twiggy broom. I was realiably informed that they are used fro many things like sweeping out negativity from the home or before a ritual. Some decorate them according to the season and keep them to ward off negativity and keep them in the hallway.
I was just wondering of anyone else does this and if this so what do they do.

i think she was more refering to the redudancy of calling it a "besom broom" instead of just a "besom", since a besom is a broom. so its like saying a "broom broom". or like saying "furniture couch"

I've never named one.
You can decorate with whatever strikes you as appropriate... ribbon, beads, wire, stones... whatever really.

Sorry about that I was being dense you are right of course a besom is a broom put it down to a senior moment.
Thanks for the reminder I don't always use the right terminology but I get there in the end.
I am using beads and ribbon to decorate my besom I also want to use some flowers eventually.

A friend gave me one that was sprayed gold. When I get/make a new one I want it to be rustic and natural looking so I doubt I'd decorate it. But yeah, go with what you like :)

I recently purchased a Cinnamon Besom. YUM. It hangs on wall near my kitchen entrance. I just LOVE the smell. I haven't decorated it yet, but one of these days I will. I just LOVE the picture.

Yes this one is a cinnamon broom. I made it for my mother for the holidays. It says on the web site they handle it like 9 times with the cinnamon oil. It is very, very, very strong smelling, but we love it. They are also priced right. http://www.touchofcountrymagic.com

heya
weirdly ive started a book on besoms...
made me giggle a bit at seeing this thread
alot of people inscribe sigils on their broom regarding the purpose of the broom and for protecton or just simply their names in ancient alphabets ie theban ogham or runic....
obvioulsy the herbs u use can also dedicate it to that purpose
but sometimes its just great to have abesom decorated with things that you like.
i got my friend a broom for her birthday
she calls it bessie...
xx
