View Full Version : tomahawk cruise missles

well, it's official.

America (and possibly britain) have launched missles that HIT in afghanistan.

There are reports that either the taliban or the military head (or are those the same things?) have been hit; that also some of Osama Bin Laden's camps have been hit. No reports of human casualties yet (that I have heard).

I do not mean to sound religious. . . but if you wish to, pray. Pray a lot. Hope that there are no needless casualties. Pray that this doesn't mean nuclear war.

I'm scared. I admit it. War frightens me, and the fact that they have nuclear weapons and chemical weapons only adds to it. Our friends in europe are in even more danger than those in the USA, because they are closer, and more within range.

edit: also, three airports hit. Phone lines have been cut. Electricity has been cut.

I hope this is the end of it.

(CNN) -- The United States and Britain launched attacks on Afghanistan's ruling Taliban on Sunday in retaliation for the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington on September 11, President Bush said.

"On my orders, the United States military has begun strikes against al Qaeda training camps and military installations of the Taliban regime," Bush said in a televised address at 1 p.m. EDT Sunday.

Bush said the action was taken after the Taliban refused to meet American demands to turn over suspected terrorist leader Osama bin Laden and other members of his al Qaeda organization.

"More than two weeks ago, I gave Taliban leaders a series of clear and specific demands: Close terrorist training camps, hand over leaders of the Al Qaeda network and return all foreign nationals, including American citizens unjustly detained in your country," Bush said. "None of these demands were met. And now, the Taliban will pay a price."

"We are joined in this operation by our staunch friend, Great Britain. Other close friends, including Canada, Australia, Germany and France, have pledged forces as the operation unfolds," Bush said.

A senior Taliban official in Kandahar, southern Afghanistan, told CNN their command and radar systems at the Kandahar airport had been destroyed, but he said the group does not rely entirely on that equipment. Witnesses in Kandahar told CNN that at least three explosions rocked the city, and power was out.

The U.S. action follows several weeks of demands that the Taliban hand over bin Laden, whom U.S. officials hold responsible for the attacks. The Taliban have refused those demands.

Bush: "We are supported by the collective will of the world."
Bin Laden has been living in Afghanistan as a guest of the Taliban, the fundamentalist Islamic militia that rules most of Afghanistan, since they seized power in 1996.

More than 5,000 people are presumed dead after hijackers plunged fuel-laden commercial jetliners into the Pentagon and each of the World Trade Center's twin towers on September 11. A fourth jet crashed into a Pennsylvania field after passengers tried to overpower the hijackers.

The United States began moving warships, aircraft and troops to southwest Asia in the weeks after the attacks. At the same time, U.S. diplomats worked to assemble a broad coalition of nations to support an international campaign against terrorism, including its NATO allies, Russia, Japan and moderate Arab states such as Jordan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

The Bush administration began sharing the results of its investigation into the September 11 attack with key allies, including the NATO countries and Pakistan, on October 2.

The United States designated bin Laden's al Qaeda organization a terrorist group in 1999. The organization has maintained training camps in Afghanistan for several years, and those camps were the target of a 1998 U.S. strike after bombings at U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania killed more than 200 people.

Bin Laden faces criminal charges in the United States in connection with those bombings, and testimony in the trials of four men convicted of those attacks linked them to al Qaeda.

European leaders have been voicing their support for the military action in Afghanistan started by the United States and Britain on Sunday.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair, in a national television address, said the start of the attacks was "a moment of the utmost gravity."

Blair said that the military action would be "targeted against places we know to be involved in the al Qaeda network of terror or against the military apparatus of the Taliban."

"We have set the objectives to eradicate Osama bin Laden's network of terror and to take action against the Taliban regime that is sponsoring him," he said. He added the international coalition's efforts would not rest until its objectives were met "in full."

He said the U.S. last Wednesday requested the use of a number of British military assets.

He said the U.S. had been granted use of facilities at Diego Garcia -- a British territory in the Indian Ocean which has extensive military facilities. He also said reconnaissance and other aircraft, and missile-firing submarines -- used in Sunday's attacks -- would take part in the military action.

Blair said that while taking action had dangers, "the dangers of inaction are far, far greater -- the threat of further such outrages, the threat to our economies, the threat to the stability of the world."

Blair also said the military action "has been put together mindful of our determination to do all we humanly can to avoid civilian casualties."

Blair said an international coalition would also be created to help refugees caught up in the crisis.

Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said in a statement the German government gave its "unreserved backing" to U.S. action against what he called "terrorist targets" in Afghanistan.

French forces will take part in military operations launched by the United States and Britain against targets in Afghanistan on Sunday, President Jacques Chirac said.

Chirac, in a nationally-televised address, said the attacks would be conducted over a long period. "Our forces will take part," he said.

"The fight against terrorism is a fight that is complex, difficult and that has to be played on several fronts. It is not just a military fight ... for this this action facing us, the French are united ... We are all united," he said.

France last week agreed to open its airspace to U.S. military aircraft and said its navy would provide logistical support to United States naval groups in the Indian Ocean.

Russia backed U.S. strikes against Afghanistan on Sunday, saying that international terrorism should face justice.

The Kremlin confirmed to CNN that U.S. President George W. Bush telephoned Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday to inform him of the military action in Afghanistan.

A Russian Foreign Ministry statement, read on ORT television, said that Taliban-ruled Afghanistan has become an "international centre of terrorism and extremism" and a safe haven for "terrorists" responsible for crimes in many countries.

"It is time for decisive action with this evil," the statement said. "Terrorists wherever they are -- in Afghanistan, Chechnya, Middle East or the Balkans -- should know that they will be taken to justice."

In his address to the nation, U.S. President George W. Bush said that Canada, Australia, Germany and France had pledged to commit their forces "as the operation unfolds.

"More than 40 countries have granted air transit or landing rights," he said.

and so it begins..., i don't want to criticise anyone's hopes for peace but this is only begun and it will not be a nice clean bomber and missile game. we've already taken some thousands of casualties as everyone knows, now bin laden, his gang and those who shelter and support him will be called to pay the butcher's bill for innocents murdered. i've read the posts of worry and concern and i won't even try to promise perfect safety here in the u.s., what i will advise is to keep your guards and wards up, be aware of your surroundings and alert to odd and unusual things and happenings around you. in my life as a "man at arms" i've lived in a state of "yellow alert" for years, not in fear, that does not help and will quickly exhaust you but as above, looking and really seeing what is going on around yourself and if something does not "look right" start moving elsewhere, packages left lying about, call the cops, basic commonsense and prudence in "a bad neighborhood". stock up on alternate light sources, battery operated, gas mantle lanterns, candles. keep 3 or 4 days worth of food put by, figure out how you will keep warm and cook if the power goes down. flush out those empty gallon milk jugs and fill them with drinking/cooking water. simple precautions. then go on about your life knowing you've done your best and the rest is in the hands of your gods and goddesses.

"Sometimes it pays to have a propane stove"

and/or one of those nice handy bottled gas barbecue grills that take the same small tanks as the gas lanterns, anything that will supply heat and light without needing a pipe whose other end you do not own and control, the media used to mock the "survivalists" as being nuts, waiting and hoping for the end of the world. but doesn't being at least somewhat self sufficent begin to sound rather attractive as time goes on. going on about your life knowing that you can cope if you need to. that you can eat until the stores re-open, if they ever do, and if not you can get by until you find ways to get food. bicycles may limit your range but they need no fuel in times when there may be none and they can carry surprising loads if you are prepared to walk and push the bike (and you can rig a bike to drive an alternator stripped from a junk car to both charge batteries and give you healthy exercise). about the possibility of a nuclear strike by bin laden's gang someone was concerned about, not a major worry, while he has tried to get nuclear weapons he has had no success and that's one thing the security types are watching for. in spite of the picture of him as some sort of "super terrorist" he and his gang are really pretty much "low tech" and nuclear weapons are beyond their ken.

A good scout is always prepared!! I remember this from my days as a child I've always been a stocker. I go to the store and I never buy just one of anything. I love the super stores like SAMS club. I have enough toiletries, water and food to lget us by for about two months. I'm going out Friday to buy a generator. I have a ton of candles, flashlights and batteries. My stove is propane so I'm set there for a while too.

I have always stocked up on things in the winter so when I can't get to the store I don't worry. Lately though there has been another motive for this. Living about 5 miles from an Air Force Base I am a bit uneasy. Most people find comfort in this but I really don't. For the past few weeks since the attacks I have been watching and hearing the fighter plans going over my head about every 3-5 minutes night and day! It's frightening and makes me a little paranoid at times.

I know this war will be very long and very tough. I worry about what will happen! When it will happen and where! Will there be any more attacks here in the US or elsewhere in the world as this war escalates! I know that I cannot control what happens but I can at least find some comfort in being somewhat prepared. This along with lots and lots of prayer will get me by day by day.

May the Goddess and God be with us all!!!

My Husband is very interested in Survival living....we have a huge Navy Sea Bag, filled with little odds and ends. Tarp, Rope, first aid supplies, asprin, toiletries, extra hiking boots and socks, knives, an axe, mess kits, flares, candles, Boxed waterproofed matches, lighters, charcoal, Nails, a hammer, one of those portable showers, propane cans, a wind up clock (which I don't get the point of..since if we're attacked, I doubt we'll need to get to work on time). You should also get a miniature battery operated radio (which is next on our checklist) We recently stocked up on canned soups, canned pastas, canned vegetables, fruits, boxed raisins (which we know almost NEVER go bad..lol..they may get hard..but...oh well)....all that good stuff. We're having a water scare in our town, the whole town has been living off of bottled water for at least two months now. We stocked up at the beginning of it, and now we're running low, so we're going to need to run out and get more, but..I imagine the National Guard is going to have to show up at some point, with a much larger supply than they've been giving us so far (so far, they've only been distributing water two times a week, limit four bottles per house)...and the grocery stores are getting deliveries of water about every other day. So..things are bound to get VERY stressed here. There have been hate-letter showing up on town government officers door steps, telling them to do something about the problem soon.....i can only imagine it's going to get worse, as we get further into this war. (btw..the reason for the scare is a gas additive in the water supply).

You should also have extra blankets..thermal if possible, a portable heater, Oh..and if you have pets....DONT forget to count in extra water for them, and stock up on pet food too. You will need to stock up on your prescriptions, if possible, have extra cash ON HAND (not in a bank, don't rely on credit cards either). If you are able to buy Silver Coins, or Gold Coins, that's reccomended by most survivalists, too. Because if the banks are closed, or the financial system somehow crumbles, Gold and Silver are ALWAYS a commodity...even a bargaining tool. The Disaster preparedness people, reccomend having a "Safe Room". A room where the doorways are sealed off with Plastic, and duct tape if possible, with all your survival gear stored in that room, in case of biological or chemichal warfare. I'm not big on panic, so I'm not panicking....don't reccomend you do either. But..if you are scared, these are some common sense things that you can do. Also...make yourself aware of the CLOSEST hospital or medical care facility, and try to find the quickest route, as well as alternative routes to get there.

One reccomendation of what NOT to do...don't invest in one of those gas masks. Many of them DO NOT WORK. Those that do, are VERY expensive, and have to be specially fitted for you.

Anyway...as I said...we shouldn't PANIC..but if you are really worried, these are some suggestions on how to prepare.

"One reccomendation of what NOT to do...don't invest in one of those gas masks. Many of them DO NOT WORK. Those that do, are VERY expensive, and have to be specially fitted for you."

good points danus, though i doubt that bin laden can cause a social collapse however much he'd like to. that would take more resources than he can muster. i do agree on the gas mask thing, the ones you can find on the surplus market are mostly european or isreali surplus, most are far from new and the filter canisters are "of dubious value" at best. even if brand new they are set up for military gases, phosgene, lewisite, the various types of mustard gas and so on. not the biological agents everyone is most worried about. i also don't, by the way recommend "panic buying" of guns, that's a purchase that wants thought if you've never owned a gun before. if you do make that choice the first thing you want to do is find good safety instruction then plan on spending time on the range learning how to handle the weapon competently and confidently. and there is some "panic buying" of guns happening, particularly by people in urban areas, we country folk mostly already have ours and have for years. danus' list is rather more practical for most folks.

and laiste and yvonne make good sense too.
