You can have it! I don't want a critter that is looking depressed and bawling all day.

I think it's a fake, though. Someone using PowerGoo to make the kitten look even sadder than it does naturally.

Ok, yes, my first reaction was AAAWWWWwwwwww........but I think the smoched faced cats are ugly. The uglyness combined with the pitiful expression fills me with pitty, so yes, I to couldn't help but to take this poor little kitten in, as hitious as it is.

Yeah, I wouldn't want it looking like it had been turned down for a date all the time.

And actually, some persian crosses *do* look like that, the poor things....

Most cats with pushed in faces like this (nd dogs) are terribly prone to sinus problems and the like. While they might be cute and certainly I wouldn't turn one down because of the deformity, I have to get on my soapbox here and rant.

To breed animals specifically to perpetuate a physical deformity like this that Will most likely cause future pain and problems JUST BECAUSE IT LOOKS CUTE is just SICK. An acquaintaince of mine is a veterinarian and he freqently mentions how persians and other cats with pushed in faces and likewise dogs such as Pugs are by far the most freqently brought in for breathing disorders and sinus, ear, and eye infections. Not to mention that their mouths are not structured right for their teeth to come in normally. Most of the time it just results in hem being closer together, but sometimes the teeth grow in wrong and have to be surgically removed, otherwise the animal is in pain (Or in at least one case he mentioned, the animal got a severe blood infection b/c of a tooth that grew in wrong and eventally got infected, and had to be put down).

I'm sorry if my rant has offended anyone. Personally, though I have never understood why people breed an animal just for show, and worse breed it for a genetic deformity. I can kind of understand personality traits ar breeding for certain abilities, as in hunting dogs, but NOT the physical appearance thing, NOT when it hurts the animal. I feel sorry for this kitten. I wonder how mch pain these animals are in and no one realises it until it develops into an actual physical illness. In some of the cat books I've read that Persians are high strung anofthen lazy. Is this merely personality? Or is it a result of the cat feeling like crap and being a bit cranky because of it?

Saddest kitten in the world is painfully accurate.

Again, sorry for any offence I may have caused, but it is a subject I've come to feel very strongly about. I just don't understand. I can see, agree even, that the kitten is cute, but cute isn't a positive thing in this case.

Too much sweetness...teeth falling out of head...

No, that first one is adorable. What breed is it? Not that I'll be getting one any time soon, we already have three.

I wasn't even AWARE it was a deformity--I just thought the cats came that way, lol. I'm wondering what else that we take for granted as "normal" is an anomaly that turned into something people bred for?

I suppose it depends on who is setting the definitions. People who bree Persian cats I'm assuming don't view it as a defornty. But, cat and other animal breeders look for "unique" traits that can be bred for, so they can claim to have created a new breed often.

What they see as a unique characteristic isn't always a bad thing of course. The majority of the time, at least with cats, it is more a matter of simple physical appearance rather than something that causes them disomfort.

Personally I regard anything that causes he animal problems as a deformity of sorts. So maybe it is just a matter of personal definition in this case. :)

Still, it is a mutation that would not have developed in the general population for cats in any widespread manner (although it would perhaps pop up occassionally) if humans hadn't bred them for it...
