:broomride Try sculpey.I use it for everything I make.I have garden plaques that I made and I just shalacked them.I make statues,runes,elemental offering plates,jewlery,ect.It is great to work with.

That looks like a raw pine wood plaque. The design was probably stenciled on and then they probably put resin or acrylic over it to make it weather proof. I plan on doing some things like that to my books eventually :)

You can probably use the pre-cut and treated woods they have at the craft store for it. Just ask the nice people for wood that would be used outside. If they don't have anything that's already treated, ask them what you need to do to it to make it durable for outside usage.

I think I've seen a similar leaf and line design in a stencil kit at the craft store. Something like that can't possibly be difficult to make.

Just make sure that, if you're using paints, you use paints that are not suseptable (that spelled right?) to fading in sunlight. Even if you coat it with something with a good UV protection, there's still some fading that might occur.
