What is your favorite quote? Is it inspirational, amusing, or just simply brilliant? Why do you love it? Who said it? A quote I just found by Theodore Rooselvelt is "In any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing. ". I found it on MW and i have a thing for inspiration quotes and such. I do have a few favorites that are silly but they have a good message to them. What type of quotes generally appeal to you?

Very recent and very funny, while strangely eloquent.

Quoth Tycho, as in Gabe and Tycho, authors of Penny-Arcade, describing the thrashing they took at the hands of rivals in a video game:

"There was something complete and just and final about their victory. It was a natural outcome, seemingly rooted in physical laws, so that when the grim and grinding event reached its completion there was no way to controvert it. When the universe authors your demise, you have no recourse."

I forgot which Carlos Castaneda book it's from, but Carlos said to Juan Matus, his mentor, "I am afraid." To paraphrase Juans' reply, he said, "Of course, you are afraid. Only a fool would not be afraid. But the difference between a normal man and a Warrior is that a normal man runs away from fear while a Warrior runs at it."

A bumper sticker I saw once said "If there were no hypothetical questions, what would this say?"
I also like "If you stand for nothing, you'll fall for anything" which I think was Eleanor Roosevelt who said that.
Oh, and Tolken's "not all who wander are lost" quote.
I usually like things that are a combination of philosophical and funny. Witty humour I guess.

Here's mine:

For if you suffer your people to be ill-educated, and their manners to be corrupted from their infancy, and then punish them for those crimes to which their first education disposed them, what else is to be concluded from this, but that you first make thieves and then punish them.
Sir Thomas More (1478 - 1535), Utopia, Book 1

The human mind treats a new idea the way the body treats a strange protein; it rejects it.
Biologist P. B. Medawar

We haven't got the power to destroy the planet -- or to save it. But we might have the power to save ourselves.
Ian Malcolm, Jurassic Park
-- I absolutely adore the JP novel, mainly because of Ian. All his best bits are cut out in the movie

Whatever became of the moment when one first knew about death? There must have been one, a moment, in childhood when it first occurred to you that you don't go on for ever. It must have been shattering- stamped into one's memory. And yet I can't remember it. It never occurred to me at all. What does one make of that? We must be born with an intuition of mortality. Before we know the words for it, before we know that there are words, out we come, bloodied and squalling with the knowledge that for all the compasses in the world, there's only one direction, and time is its only measure.
Tom Stoppard (1937 - ), Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.
Henry David Thoreau (1817 - 1862)

Jealousy is the art of injuring ourselves more than others.
Alexandre Dumas (1802 - 1870)

In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love; they had five hundred years of democracy and peace and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.
Orson Welles (1915 - 1985), The Third Man, 1949

Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns - - the ones we don't know we don't know. And if one looks throughout the history of our country and other free countries, it is the latter category that tend to be the difficult ones.
Donald H. Rumsfeld (1932 - ), Department of Defense news briefing, February 12, 2002

In the beginning there was nothing. God said, 'Let there be light!' And there was light. There was still nothing, but you could see it a whole lot better.
Ellen DeGeneres

[Medicine is] a collection of uncertain prescriptions the results of which, taken collectively, are more fatal than useful to mankind.
Napoleon Bonaparte (1769 - 1821)

The cruelest lies are often told in silence.
Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 - 1894)

America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence without civilization in between.
Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900)

An intellectual is a person who has discovered something more interesting than sex.
Aldous Huxley (1894 - 1963)

All television is children's television.
Richard P. Adler

I am among those who think that science has great beauty. A scientist in his laboratory is not only a technician: he is also a child placed before natural phenomena which impress him like a fairy tale.
Marie Curie (1867 - 1934) French (Polish-born) chemist & physicist
-- This quote sums up how I feel about science. Science is a wonderful thing. Very beautiful, strange, weird, and inspirational. :)
