I'm very curious about meditation and wasn't sure where to post this question.

I'll come clean, I'm not the most spiritual, religious, etc. person out there. I was raised Catholic and went through Confirmation, but that isn't what I'm interested in pursuing right now. In fact, religon isn't my top priority. I'm just interested in the arts of meditation and similar excercises. I want to become more acquianted with my mind and be able to obtain more "inner peace". I'm so out of the blue on all of this, I don't even know what exactly meditation does.

What I was hoping to obtain is some insight on how to meditate. I don't even know where to start. I'm talking about:

do you listen to music?
do you lay down, sit, stand?
what do you think about?
how do you think about it?

I know some of those are hard to answer...but I'm just trying to gain some insight on exactly what meditation is...so I can practice it.

I hope this mess makes sense to some of you so I can get some help haha.

Meditation generally comes in two forms: guided meditations where you focus on visualizing something, and stillness where you think about nothing. Both are great for calmness though I find guided meditations easier to do. I generally started by focusing on my breath and then visualize myself walking through a wood, in a place of relaxation or as tree.

Do you have any breathing excercises that can enduce the state of mind?

Also, what about music, surroundings, etc. What do they play into it?

I listen to music, and I either sit or lay down, depending on the type of meditation I'm doing. For stillness meditations I sit, for guided I usually lie down because I'm astral projecting, so it's a lot easier to get out of my body when I'm lying down.

There are a few exercises that you can do that help focus your meditation. I always use the chakra points as my guiding points. There's a few sites online if you search for chakra's that'll explain more about them, and I do believe that along with the chakras there are some sounds that you can make when concentrating on certain chakras. I don't use the sounds, so I don't know much about them.

I think meditation helps me clear my mind and replenish my energy, it's good for reducing stress and dealing with problems. I meditated a lot before giving birth to my first child and surprisingly enough, it didn't hurt a lot and I did it all natural, so it's really about getting the focus.

When doing meditation you want to think about what you want that meditation to accomplish, do you want to be more relaxed, do you want to simply reach a point of silence of the mind, do you want to deal with the problems in your current life, anything is possible. It's a way to rid yourself of the negativity and sometimes excitement of life.

I hope this helps,
Kaliel
