ok. well, I am writing a novel. As some may know, and I am suffering from name block. I have NO clue what to name my main character. Hes a male, and about 18. I also need names for secondary characters both female and male. If anyone has any ideas at all..... (I want, less common names like Rand, or Terrin...)
Thanks:)

can you give me a bit of a summary of what the novel is about?
you would want the names of the characters to flow in with the storyline

i wish i could find the old article by, i think, the late lin carter on names. (he was a sci-fi/fantasty writer). one suggestion i can make, even with "exotic" names keep them "pronounceable", it's hard to get interested in the fate of a character who's name you can't even pronounce. and watch sticking in apostrophes in to make it look "different" there's a series out titled something like "wi'tch wars" where the writer does that, pu'tting an apost'rophe in the mid'dle of com'mon wo'rds and it annoyed me so that i pitched the book across the room after only the first two chapters. some reading on the naming conventions of other and older societies would help, like the old norse custom of naming after characteristics. e.g. "ragnar hairybreeks", "ivar the boneless" (who likely would have sold his chance at valhalla for a dose of viagra in this world) or the still current icelandic custom of taking the father's name and adding "son" or "daughter" to it. as "harald stenssonn" or "ingild svensdatter". as well many common family names now began as "son of", "mac", "mc" "fitz" and almost any name ending in "son". then there are the occupational and place derived names, "sean the blacksmith" who became "john smith" or "william of the marshes" who's children eventually answered to "marsh". i could go on but that will do for a start.
