Hey everyone,
I'm new here to MW, and I'm looking foward to reading and participating in all the interesting threads going on here!
I'll tell you a bit about myself:
I'm a 23-year-old university student in Peterborough, Ontario, where I'm studying linguistics at Trent University. I am handfasted to StarSpiral, another MW member. I kept reading threads over her shoulder, which is what got me interested in joining. :)
I'm a Pagan, and that's the term that I most often use to identify myself religiously. I would say I'm "pretty much" Wiccan, although I don't use that label as much as I used to. I was raised Catholic (and attended Catholic school at the elementary and secondary levels), and converted to Paganism at the age of 15.
I'm a pretty hard-nosed (though open-minded) skeptic of all claims supernatural or otherwise hard to back up, and I tend to focus my spiritual/magic(k)al work inwardly rather than outwardly. My spiritual beliefs are founded on a philosophically naturalistic view of the universe, and I view the divine as the totality of Nature (including us). I worship a God and Goddess (and individual gods and goddesses) in a sort of "soft polytheism", with a philosophical foundation derived from a psychological archetype sort of approach. ...If that makes sense. :)
As far as labels that I identify with, (which I think are useful as shorthands for more complex philosophies or practices), I identify as: Pagan, anarchist (libertarian socialist), vegan, polyamorous, and feminist. I see most of these as pretty interconnected.
As far as my more inherent identities go, I'm a white male with a middle-class background. I'm also straight, though I align myself philosophically with queer approaches to questions of sexuality.
I like debating my views, and I'll probably spend a lot of time in the politics forum. I enjoy arguing, but I generally respect people who disagree even vehemently with me so long as they're reasonably civil.
Looking forward to getting to know you,
Josh
P.S. I just picked my forum name because it sounded fun. I'm really not all that devious, and whether or not I'm a deviant is probably a matter of opinion. ;)
