If you go to Fanny's or Fabric Land, they always have some nice patterns. Just look in the pattern books under costumes.

Actually, she's right. Most major pattern companies have something under costume these days and some of them are quite elaborate. If the fabric store is big enough they might even carry patterns from some smaller designers and those are VERY elaborate and historically accurate. Mine carries designs from a company that puts out patterns by periods, men and women's.

Some of my favorite links:

http://costume.dm.net/ - Links to all kinds of informational pages, how-to's, and merchants of everything from patterns to accessories, particularly links to pattern companies that are more historically accurate.

http://homepage.mac.com/festive_attyre/ - Jen Thompson's website. The "Featured Attyre" section has pictures of costumes people made...1 per week, since 2001. Great for getting ideas. Her Venetian Dress Diary is also what inspired me for the dress I'm working on now.

http://www.reddawn.net/costume/index.html - Look under the "Patterns" section, particularly for the "How to Alter Commercial Patterns" and the "Advice" for working with the patterns. Her Commercial Costume Patterns (http://www.reddawn.net/costume/costpat.htm) page is also very good for getting ideas using the patterns from Simplicity, McCall's, and Butterick.

http://www.vertetsable.com/index.html - If you feel insane enough to get more involved, the Research and Demonstrations sections (*especially* the Demos section) are incredibly useful.

If you are looking for historically accurate patterns, try http://www.longago.com This is a place called Haper House, and some of the patterns are a bit more expensive than going to Walmart, but well worth the price.

I don't know what kind of fabric stores you have where you are, but some of the stores here, have sales where the simplicity patterns go on sale for $1. Thats when I stock up. Another brand that has some nice patterns is McCalls, both can be found online.
Good luck

One quick thing to remember, try not to forget that you can use so many different materials than what the pattern calls for. I've made some very cool clothes, that have used some very funky material and changed the look of the clothes completely. Sometimes you get blinded by the picture on the patern and you forget to think outside the box! So even some of the cheesier costumes can end up looking really nice if the fabric is right.

Simplicity and McCalls definately have Rennie costumes. Typically you'll find them in the Halloween section.

But I agree with darkfaery - you should always look at the patterns with no bias towards what the final product appears like on the cover of the packet :) And you might even mix and match various patterns to get the design you want!

Happy Sewing!

The recent one I got was a mix and match pattern where it gives you just the dress pattern then another one gives you diifferent corest and bodice patterns I love them.

Ah, yes, the joys of getting those patterns cheap. Sales at Wal-Mart and Jo-Ann's can be wonderful. That's when I like to stock up on them, even if I'm not sure I'll use them. You never know when a pattern might have something you want (a particular style of sleeve, for example) but it's discontinued when you want it. Nrgh! Some good patterns have been discontinued, and it's a real bummer! I've heard you can sometimes find them (discontinued patterns) on eBay, but I'd rather not go that route.

Some day...SOME day...I want to get the set of patterns by Margo Anderson (http://www.margospatterns.com/mainframe.htm). *drool*

So adding my voice to Bran Iolair's...LT, what are you needing the pattern for, and when do you need the costume done? Do you have any idea what style you're going to do? Colors? Fabrics? I love hearing about costuming projects!

You're quite welcome! I've been lusting after those for so long now, but at the same time I don't really want to do an English Nobility costume. I want a wardrobe of other cultures first, simply to be different. But I have the feeling that I will be asking for the patterns when my birthday rolls around. *chuckle*

I hear ya! I have more ideas in my head of what I WANT to do, but after sewing for three months straight, I'm all for taking a break right now. Is it really possible to limit yourself to one project a year?

I agree, I can wander in there for a long time. And modifying patterns can be fun! I found a really crappy doublet pattern for my boyfriend and modified it to a pretty good style. Plus, he looks SO good in it.
