Hi, my question is: How did astrologers know which planet to assign to which sign? For example, why was the planet Jupiter assigned to Pisces and Sagitarrius and not the planet Mars? With the recent discovery of Pluto, how did they know what Pluto signify and why did they assign that planet to Scorpio?

wow, I think that would fall in the category of Cosmic Physics, or Cosmic Engineering.....
but when we look at the History of Occult KNowledge as we know it, (Occult meaning hidden, carefully safeguarded secrets)
it has just always been there i guess,
the higher self uses what we call "Archetypes" a sort of universal code language, so when we use certain things under certain conditions with certain intent, we supposedly get a desired affect...
I know I havent even attempted to answer the question, but I just wanted to share a thought,

Mhrtwll: The question you ask is not as complicated as it appears. That the rulers of the several signs are obvious when one views many, many, birth charts. Although the answer to the question is also to be seen when one uses mundane astrology, and in reference to the Sidereal Zodaic. Allow me to say that the Ascending sign of a birth chart has a ruler, and the house location and aspects of that ruler indicate something about the livlihood of the individual. As the Zodiacal sign sets up a conscious expectation, the ruler of the sign sets up situations that conform to those expectations. For example, allow me to point out Virgo. That the Virgo energy is bent on analysis, knowledge, crafts, math, drafting, isolation for discernment purposes, (taking apart to see how something works) drafting, communication, cartography and other aligned abilities. It should be noticed that all of the foregoing is indicative of a Mercury rulership. In order to verify all of this, the Astrologer should collect as many charts of those famous folks who have Virgo Ascending (Sidereal Zodiac) and note their notoriety, and then reference this to the position of Mercury in their several birth charts. Using Mundane Astrology, the ancient Celtic masters knew about the Sidereal Ingresses and when Virgo or Gemini (both ruled by Mercury) were on the ascendant for the location of their viewing at the time of the Sidereal Solar ingress, they considered such to be a fortunate omen. This ancient fact is demonstrated by the names of the days of the week in English. That Wednesday ( the day of Woden -4th day) is the "day of Mercury". To the Celtic preists ( the Druids and others) the days were not named in sequence after the planets from the Sun but in order of their importance to the war-like Celtic, European peoples, (C. 550 BC)

oh ok thanks Meth! That answered my question!
Some more questions...(I am so curious)
What sign is Chiron associated? What is the name of the other planet besides Chiron that was recently discovered? And what do these celestial bodies signify in astrology?

The latest discoveries you are speaking of are known as Centuars. They comprise an entire family of newly discovered heavely bodies that may or may not be of any astrological significance. Chiron has definitely proven itself to be a valid Astrological force and that should be included in every birth chart. Because Chiron is located between Saturn and Uranus, and unlike the other Centaurs which have a very elliptical orbits, Chiron is effective during most of its orbital period which is 51 years. Centaur Chiron denotes a crisis in emotional perception, premonitions, and other such psychic disturbances. When Chiron is fully encountered in a progressed chart, the associated event will often be one that will indellibly be imprinted into the consciousness of the individual for a lifetime. He is usually associted with emotional shock through a progressed encounter and also (somewhat of a) mental instability when by transit to one's nativity angles or to the birth sun. We don't know how many Centaurs are out there, but to date we have named about 70 of them, and there are many more that do not have names but are known by numbered codes. I have tracked the transits of some of the major ones over my own birth chart through the years, and most do not warrant any consideration. This is probably due to the fact that most of them have such eccentric orbits to the Zodical ecliptic (wild variations, both north and south of the annual Solar track) that they are Astrologically ineffective. The only one that I can honestly say has any indication of viable, consistnat Astrological influence is Chiron.
That because some of the Centaurs and major Asteroids have definite Astrological significances, does not automatically mean that they should be assigned a sign rulership. Although there may be some affinity to the several signs, that does not mean that they are automatically sign-associated. For example, the Asterod Toro, has as its theme, the sending and receiving of gifts. This is a repetitious activity associated with this Asteroid. That such is not associated with any specific Zodiacal sign , but gifts exchange is more parallel to a Mercury/Venus conjunction which usually denotes a similiar activity. Sign rulerships are apparently only valid with the major planets, and that sign rulerships holds a very ancient and valid recognized response to their positions in the heavens, the signs and houses they occupy within one's nativity.
