How exactly would you go about learning about past lives? Is it strictly a meditational experience or are there other ways?

I have been wondering about this too... I have had lucid dreams in which I think I've uncovered something that may have been a past life but I've always wanted to know like, a real "strategy" I suppose for trying to learn more.

when i did it i cast a spell to help recall past life memories and then went into a trace like state so i could write them down as they came through..I wanted to do it in dream state but i can never remember them when i wake up.. I cant find the spell i used though :( it isnt with my notes from the past life regression which is odd as i am positive i worte it in the same book.. if i find it i'll post it..
I was able to recall 5 past lives.. I remember they came through like i was watching from the side lines.. like watching a movie of my past lives and the emotions i felt were very strong too.. with one i even felt physical pain.. not bad but i was aware of it being there

No, it's not a strictly meditational experience. You can learn about your past lives in dreams, trance, meditation, divination, and in many other ways I can't think of right now. However, I'd like to tell anyone who's thinking about this to ask themselves if this is something they really want to do, no matter what they find.
Personally I had experiences when I was younger that gave me clues about a past life. They're kind of hard to explain, they were sounds, in a way... Anyway, for me, those glimpses were enough, I don't want to know more.
I've always believed there's a very good reason most of us don't remember our past lives, and personally I'm not going to do anything to change that. It's your choice, of course, but be beware that you might not like what you find.

Thanks.
I love learning about history so I don't see this as any different. I'm going to keep looking.

I think there is a lesson in each of our past lives. For me, that was the value of looking at them. To bring back something that I can use to grow with. Something to help me overcome present shortcomings. Coming back with knowledge from previous life experiences can be helpful for overcoming present problems.

The way I first got in contact with a previous life, was purely spontaneous- without knowing it, I had come to a place in the UK where I had lived in a previous life and that seemed to unlock the whole thing.
I have also had some good results with regression-hypnosis.
Other than that, meditation and "controlled" sleep.

I've had dreams about my past lives, but I've also had 'visions' (where I'll be wandering and I'll see a flash of something or someone, or what have you), or I'll just.. 'know'.. *shrug* ^_^ Sometimes my visions were in a meditative state (like zoning-out in class), but most of the time, it's when I was just walking around or sleeping. Or in history class, I'll remember something completely random that isn't shown in the books. <.< ^_^;;
The only problem with dreaming about my past lives is that my dream brain takes over my dreams and makes them go crazy! So it's hard picking out the truth from the symbollism from the imagination. ^_^

Oh! Also, they have lots of books that can help you find out about your past lives, and each of them have different methods. Check them out. ^_^

i went to a regression.
Most poeple go under hypnosis when they do this, but i didnt.Basically your put into such a relaxed state that a person can easily regress you to your former lives.

tell me if this is a dumb question but are previous lives allways in human state?

not nessecarily, but 9/10 times they are.I had one where it was most definatley in some kind of spirit world. As far as lives as animals go, i have heard of people with them, but the regressionist can tell if its genuine anyway, most of the time.
I had one friend and he said"I can see a bear, a big white bear and theres lots of snow, the bear is hugging me, it has respect for me, and i can feel his power."
BULL!!!!!! when in any life has someone hugged a Bloody polar bear??
iv posted this before, but not even Steve Irwin has hugged Polar bears!!

tell me if this is a dumb question but are previous lives allways in human state? Well, your most recent previous lives are more likely to be human, yes. We tend to get into habits. Though like Fane Ayuma said, not necessarily. This could be your first life as a human, or you could have been human before but had an intervening lifetime as something else. I also agree that we aren't necessarily bound to this physical plane on Earth, either, but we do get in the habit of reincarnating in similar forms/places...
Um, Fane Ayuma? Was this friend of yours sure he was human himself when he "hugged the polar bear"? I can see bears hugging other bears. People, though, even if the bear was "friendly" and intending "brotherhood" (which is really hard to imagine), would be likely seriously injured by such close contact with a bear. I mean, even if it wasn't intentional, you'd still likely be gashed or mauled. You're right to be suspicious, it's a strange claim. Perhaps it wasn't a past life at all. Perhaps it was some kind of spirit (guide?) taking the form of a polar bear. That seems much more likely. ^_^

My past lives, or the ones that I remember came to me through meditation and reiki, they rather randomly came to me. I wasn't searching for them... I didn't even believe I had any past lives at the time, or if I had past lives they were very few. Turns out I'm a pretty old soul and I've been dancing here for a while.
Anyway, yeah, I learned of my past lives through meditation. I know that there are people you can go to who will help you uncover your past lives, and I assume that most of the time one needs to actually go searching to find out about his or her past lives.

No it was him, trying to get everyone to believe he had some kind of powerful shamanic connection with animals. What we try to explain to him is, why would he make stuff up, and waste he's ,ours and the regressionists time and money, when he could genuinely do it, and very probably have better results.
When i did it, i didnt know what to expect. When i came out of it or "Woke up" i couldnt remember a thing, i was shaking all over, and what seemed like the two or three seconds that had passed, was in fact an hour and a half.I was told everything i had said, and slowly they all came back to me, i went through so many lives, the regressionist said he couldnt believe how fast and how easy i was to regress, he said he never saw anythiing like it before.i did to a flow meditaion the night before(Thats a meditaion to get your mind in an easy open state, so your thoughts flow).I can remember bieng women, men, children, warriors, nights, loadsa stuff, the most recent one, i lived in what seems to me like the open deserts in America, living in a cabin on my own, just with the stars above me, and the land beneath.
Afterwards you feel so clear and so...relaxed, its well worth doing.Even if these past lives are a figment of your imagination, which i dont think so, a regression certainly clears your head.

(shout out! Hi Chesh, long time cutie!)
Good question, Chesh I was wondering the same thing and thanks for the thread Ruby.
My desire to explore this is getting stronger and stronger. I have a problem with escalators (I know, whatever) and some staircases. I've always had, when I was a child, I could climb to the top of the tree but would be petrified to come down.
It escalated (I know  ) when I started managing record stores and had to climb these really tall ladders to do the wall displays, and I'd be petrified to come down. It was sometimes embarrassing when someone would be waiting for me and here I am having an inner panic attack.
Well now (and it's gotten worse through the years), I have problems going up and down escalators and some stairs. I have this sensation I'm either going to fall forward or back. I was running to get in the subway in DC a couple weeks ago, and jumped on the escalator going down. When I realized it was this massive LONG tube to the end, it was too late to get off. I thought I was going to die... People were riding up the other side and I must have looked like I was terrified. I just clenched the handrail thing, felt the sweat building up and prayed I could focus on something to just get me down this thing.
We usually will take the elevators if the escalators are hairy for me, but I totally didn't even think of it at that time.
What's bizarre about this sensation is I have the feeling something did happen to me in another life that is manifesting itself into this fear. It seems to get worse as I get older. I'm almost wondering if it was/is close to the age I am now that "something" happened and I am reliving it.
One poster made the comment, be careful what you wish for - you might not want to know and I totally agree - but with our Craft comes balance. Perhaps if we find out something negative, we can turn it into a positive. Maybe for me, if I did find out that maybe I did 'fall' frontwards or backwards - it would alleviate the 'why what if' fear and I could move on. On an escalator... LOL.
Maybe I just need a shrink, LOL...:twitch:

(Hey Darling, haven't seen you in AGES!!!)
And to expound upon what Suzette's said, I've had alot of people come into my life as of late that have sparked memories that I would really like to delve into further...
As for "be careful what you wish for" and such, while I can see how that may be true...I, myself, believe, that no knowledge is wrong...it simply IS....
I also can see how NOT knowing some things can ease the life we live in now, but I've never been the one to take the easy road. You learn more with the bumps, twists and turns that a difficult life sometimes brings. And, while I'm the first to complain about the crap going on in my life, I also realize it makes me stronger.
So, I think having a clearer picture of the past, will grant me a better guide to the present and future.
That said, anyone have any suggestions about where to go. I tried to find something on Witchvox, to no avail. But that also may be due to my poor internet skills.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide...

Older post I know. Reposting this for anyone who wants to know the same thing.
This was posted in your other past lives thread: Past Lives? (http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=155603&highlight=meditation)
You can:
Meditate
Dreams (journaling, paying attention to, etc)
Divination
Pay attention of sychronicities, your past life "alarm clock", signs
Take detailed inventories of things in your life that might be remnants form a past life (anything form talents to fears, see PAST LIFE RESOURCES: Heal by Discovering Your Past Lives (http://www.healpastlives.com/pastlf/pastlf.htm) for more about that, just look around at their articles)
Actually here's their questionnaire thing. I used that to get questions to journal about, you don't have to send the $ in to use the questions as a guide: http://www.healpastlives.com/profile.pdf I'd go though all those questions (That's what I'm doing) and answer them, many of them are keys to figuring yours out.
Read books about past lives and reincarnation, often they have helpful info
Visualization exercises
Certian CDs and meditation music
Hypnosis, regression
Just waiting for your answers to come to you.I've spent a long time looking into my past lives without the help of regression. It's just taken paying attention, being open and learning about reincarnation to make progress. If you don't uncover anything right away, don't worry...it'll come in time. Often when you're meant to know. I for example know I died a horrible death in my recent life/lives. I can't remember the specifics, but the affects of them play out as unfounded (in this life) fears and phobias. For whatever reason I'm being blocked from this information, though I didn't have a problem uncovering my past life as a Catholic monk-- possibly because that was a peaceful life. Anyway, if you want more help just let me know...or PM me or something.
I hope the sites and suggestions help and good luck!

I go in and out of Forum mode (bored/interested) and don't often have the time, but I do think of my cyber friends here often...
Thank you, Agaliha for reposting those suggestions. I'm sure there are many threads on this topic and will take more time to check out.

A friend of mine took a Shamanic workshop from Mike Harner
He showed a bit of what he was taught
I put myself into a light trance with a tape of drumming and tried bringing myself back to a certain period of time that I felt was very crucial
All I got was fleeting glimpse and three words describing the circumstances of death
But that proved to be the kick in the door, opening the intuition needed to mine that field of memory though it all came bit by bit
