Where did that term come from? Does it have anything to do with actual physical weavings of magical items?

Spinning and weaving (and other textile making that involves knots . . . like knitting, crochet and net tying), was considered to have magical properties. It is tied to Fate or the Fates, who spin the thread, weave the cloth and snip the threads of life.

I would agree with what Pricke has said.

The Fates or the Norns spin and weave threads of life. I would also hazard a guess that perhaps, spinning and weaving were also women's work and women did look after the hearth as well - hence, the link between spinning and weaving to magic.
