View Full Version : My 'favourite' goddess is....

So I'm trying to figure out which god and godesses are most popular in the pagan community for a project I'm doing, and I'd also like to know why; what is it you're attracted to about them, in particular? _catroll_ I know this has been done before, but I'm using a poll :woot: which will make seeing peoples choices much easier :uhhuhuh:

(Please dont be offended by the term 'favourite', I simply didn't want to exclude those who dont have 'patrons' :) )

Have to say Aset (Isis), though Bast comes in a close second.

I also vote for Aset :D

I'd imagine she's one of the more common ones, although I think a lot of people ignore her darker side(that brings up the whole Aset/Isis debate again, though)...but that's also a problem with most goddesses in general, I'd imagine.

Gaia... "giver of life, mother of us all... hey look what I smuggled aboard" all the way!

I chose Hekate, but only because Sekhmet wasn't an option, and I love them both...so "other" seemed like a bad choice.

I voted "other," as my choice (Yemaya) didn't appear on the list. As for why, it's because of the ocean connection. The beach is the one place on earth where I feel happiest and most alive and most at peace - how could I not feel an affinity for an ocean goddess?

Also, several years ago I was in the Bahamas and saw the phrase "Star of the Sea" on a Catholic school's sign. Of course it was referring to the Virgin Mary, but I thought that it was incredibly beautiful and it stuck in my head. It wasn't until this year that I learned that that appellation is also used for Yemaya.

She's not shy, is she? LOL....It is so wierd for me, cause she is not my Patron(matron) goddess, but she is my hubbers, and she and I get a long very very well.....I can always tell it is her in the room, in the situation, cause she feels sooooo completely different than my actual mom--Sekhmet. She gives me chills down my spine and is just so ever-present, I love her to death! (no pun intended!)

This is a hard one! I said Cerridwen because I've had the most experience with Her. She's definatey a Goddess of great wisdome. After that, I'd say Kali, Gaia, and then Isis.

i would have to say my favorite is Persephone. Ever since learning about her when we did greek mythology in 6th grade (and probably before that, my uncle had a dog named Persephone, and i'm sure i asked about the name at one point or other), i have been drawn to her. i love her story, she seems to have this mysterious sadness to her, i don't know. as far as i know, she hasn't made any contact with me, nor i have her, but still...

:bothsides I am guessing she could help ya out with that....thanks! Seriously, I had the worst friggin week, and she was right there, helping me fix it, even though, technically, it is not her role...she is the most vigilant goddess I have experienced yet!

I have always had a strong bond with Rhiannon (she is my matron), and now I find that I am close to Brighid as well.

Selene.

Why?
She's a mother goddess (full moon), a goddess of solutions, and a woman's rights goddess. Ever since I was a child, and before I was pagan, this was who I looked up to. When I became pagan, I decide, after many thoughts, she was perfect for my matron goddess. So.. yay.

Ooo this is hard. I follow sixty-two God/desses (and no, I'm not the type who goes "Well she is a Goddess of Love so I must have her", I have been studying for a while now. Have not really picked a Patron yet). . But I have to go with Athena. :)

Athena is my protectress. She guides me and grants almost everything I ask of her. She is like a providing mother, and I am a child who looks into her eyes in awe and wonder. I love her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! _twohorns_

Then, I'd have to say Bast, then Gaia, then Eris, then Selene, then Artemis, then Laurel, then Neb-het, then Aset, and I could go on so Im just gonna shut up. :)

My matron goddess is Aphrodite, I think she is an incredible, multi-dimensional goddess. I have a few other favourites like Isis, Hathor and Demeter. I was reading something today on the goddess Astarte and it turns out she is identified with all of those I mentioned :steppy: I thought that was awesome.

If I had to pick the one that most fascinates me I'd have to say The Cailleach, though I wouldn't call her, or any other goddess, my favorite. I just find her incredibly intriguing. I've never had direct contact with her, but then on the other hand I'm not sure I'd want to either. She is very primordial and apart from man from what I've learned. I'm not sure that she'd welcome the attention.

Personally I don't have a 'favourite' Goddess. However, I have voted Brigid as she is the daughter of my Patron God, The Daghda, and is a Hearth Goddess. I am studying Kitchen Witchery to compliment my Cottage and Green/Hedge Witchery and Brigid seems the logical choice to call upon as my Hearth Goddess.

I can't choose just one. Out of the list I'd choose Artemis, Morrigan, Hel, Bast and the generic "Lady". There are others too, but for each I love them for a different reason.

Inari
April 4th, 2005, 06:09 PM
I choose Brigid, even so it was a tough call. While Brighid is my matron and there's no doubting it judging by past experince the Morrigan has also attached themselves to me as well. Perhaps I'm bipolar and just don't know it.

My favourite female divinity is AODH (of Ireland), she warms me up, and makes me feel loved - a feeling that I am not able to achieve in the mundane world from too many persons.

A while ago i would have said WHITESONG (CERRIDWEN), but I've taken a turn in the path since then. WHITESONG still is very close to me.

Artemis is my patron goddess, so I guess that makes her my "favorite". She was never the goddess that interested me the most, to start with, but over the years she just appeared again and again, until I had to recognize her presence. And once I did, it all made sense.

April 6th, 2005, 12:08 AM
I voted "Goddess, or Lady". I passed over this thread so many times, and I had three in mind, but I just couldn't choose a favorite. They *all* encompass "The Lady" to me, and each name, each individual Goddess, is merely a small representation of Her. One of the Goddess aspects that I have a special fondness for is Inanna. Her myth really rings true to me and my life. The other aspect is Rhiannon. She also rings very true to me. Then of course, there is Bast. But I just can't pick a favorite. When I contact the Goddess, she is "The Lady" to me.

the ones who don't have patrons also need multiple choice. ;) but i chose frigga, cause she seems to play larger part in my life than most of the others, and also, she seems to share almost all the aspects of my other "favourites". other than her, i converse with freyja, skadhi, hel, and on the scottish side, the cailleach and scathach.

Brigid (although I use to call her Brigantia). I wasn't even wondering about have personal deities when I began to feel like she was there and had something to tell me (instead of "hear a call" it was more like if she were throwing little objects to me to make me pay attention :toofless: ).

So I'm trying to figure out which god and godesses are most popular in the People community for a project I'm doing, and I'd also like to know why; what is it you're attracted to about them, in particular?

Epona, She who is Mother, the Mare, and the Sea. Connection to Her is through horses (something about being raised on a breeding farm and all that). She is a lead mare to me: She will listen, but thoroughly expects me to take care of my own situations and responsibilities. Hoofprints on my rump frequently.

Brighide even though at first I was a little unsure of myself with when it came to this goddess. Of course now that I know her better it makes perfect sense and I am of course grateful for all the help I've gotten over the years.

Sophia. aka Wisdom that is written about in the Bible (Proverbs), and the Wisdom of Solomon (in the Apocrypha). I also believe that "God" in the Bible is genderless, yet both genders, and that it is equally correct to call "Him" Goddess.

Well, I chose Persephone because she is mysterious, beloved to her mother Demeter and is a great promise umongst many ways of being....though, there were many there I love and follow and access.... lately it has been especially Het Hert ( Hathor) who was not on the list.

The older I grow the more fascinated I find myself become with the Virgin aspect of the Goddess....this is very odd for me. I notice that my latest art depictions of the Goddess are youthful ( yound adult ) beatific looking Goddess's, with wise eyes and.

When I was younger it was all about matureity in the Goddess.....so, odd.

Morrigan was the goddess that called me to the path I'm on, and continues to lead me along it. She was the first goddess I could believe in with all my heart, and she is the one who now holds me.

Morrigan as a whole appeals to me, though each aspect takes it's turn in command. It comes with serving such a pragmatic goddess.

Artemis.... do not ask me why, simply because I can't give a why other than I've always been drawn to her, from before I'd ever heard anything about her... there's always just be something. That and I've always known her as the goddess of the moon, though I do understand that not to be true, that's just how I see her, and what I was taught as a child, therefore it's something that I just attribute her with... and I've always had a certain fondness for the moon (I was born on a monday, ammused).... anyway, I'm rambling.

^_^ Actually, this is quite simple for me! I love all of 'em! To me, they are all equal, and, considering I was kind of raised this way, I will treat them such. It's not meant to be offensive to anyone else, by the way. It's just my opinion! ^_~

For me it's Het Hert (Hathor) who is not on the list. I am drawn to her for many reasons. But I respect all the others who are listed and tend to agree with CrimsonCat above me that in some sense they are all equal. Often in prayer and ritual I address myself simply to the Goddess and The God in a generic sence.

The first two ARE dragons and the last uses one for transportation...After decades of research my theory is that dragons were in existence in ancient times. (More on that at a future date...) These Goddesses fascinate me since they combine the Mother/Creator/Goddess concept with perhaps the most-revered creature in Oriental myth and lore - the Dragon.

Favorite? Couldn't choose without some elaboration on what "favorite" means.

Does it mean who I feel represents the things I value and aspire for most? If so, it's Athena.

Does it mean who I'm most thankful to? If so, it's Aphrodite. I made a votive offering to her back in January, and if you ask me, I got the better end of the deal by far. Aphrodite really knows how to do her job.
