I'm sure this thread will be met with controversy, but I received this in my email today, and it described so well my own beliefs about attunement that I felt I must share. While this is certainly not a conventional viewpoint (at least within traditional reiki), I've never been very conventional! :)
I say, if it works, it works. If you're open to the possibility of your own empowerment, of your own ability to work with these energies right now, and heal others... more power to you.

Here is the thing about attunements: The facts are that all of us can pass attunements, though none of us need any other intermediary (or "master/teacher") in order to receive or give attunements. Doesn't this make sense? We all have a direct line to Spirit! Spirit does not know whether one has "officially" received the "master" certificate or not!
In fact, as a "master" myself, I teach my students that my job is not to attune them. My job is to simply remind them of their ever-present connection with Source, and that they have direct access to "the throne of Grace" themselves without the added intervention of me or anyone else. This is empowering to myself and to the student.
Why do "masters" then so often insist that you NEED them to give you something? This is just an _expression of fear--the master feels that if he or she is not necessary to the process, why would a student come, much less pay good money to take a class? A good acronym for 'fear' is False Expectations Appearing Real. The master's job is to master
himself/herself, and to stand in his/her OWN power, and to spread that joy to his/her students! Isn't that wonderful? That certainly IS important!!
So, can you attune yourself? Yes! Can anyone? Of course! How could it be any other way? In my classes, I use some of the Joshua David Stone materials that talk about how just by intending it, you can channel anything you want--and I mean, not only "channel" by getting impressions, words, etc.,-- but actually channel the energy of any angel, ascended
master, energy system, cosmic ray, etc.
You may want to try it right now. Simply ask to channel the 9th cosmic ray--the ray of pure joy. I say "joy on" when I do this. Also, one of my favorites is to channel the energy of Master Jesus. I simply invite him in, and say "Jesus on!" If you feel any of this energy to move slower than the Shamballa energy you're used to, simply ask the master, the energy ray, or the angel you're channeling for an attunement to that energy. And WATCH OUT, baby!! LOL! :-)
Remember God holds nothing back--EVER! Everything that is of the Source of all creation is already yours for the asking. Your job is simply to ask.
Many master/teachers find this idea of self-attunement, of the student not "needing" their intervention to be offensive and wrong. This is simply because we have forgotten what our job is, as master/teachers. Our job is not to give the student anything they couldn't get themselves. It is simply to remind the student that they are God's children, with all the glory, rights, privileges, and gifts they could ever need. And infinitely more! We don't need to dis-empower other people in order to feel powerful ourselves! We need to take our power back, stand firm in our own power, and in doing so, those around us will be reminded that it is ok for them to do the same.
This is such an important job! Remember the definition of healing that A Course in Miracles gives is "healing is a thought by which people perceive their unity and become glad!"
My attunement process is simply to invite in the beings who govern the particular energy I'm wishing the student to be attuned to (for Shamballa, this would be the Lords and Ladies of Shamballa, and Germain, Sanat Kumara, etc.), and I say (either out loud or to myself) "I now intend that all beings in this room be attuned to at least (whatever level I'm seeking the attunement for) for their highest and best good, and according to Divine Will." It's really that simple. Everyone can now spend at least 10 minutes in meditation, receiving the flow of energy. For added kicks, I may go around the room, and place my hands on the student's head, hands, and ankles, but this is not necessary. Remember the "master" is not necessary to the process. The master is simply there to remind, to invoke, to guide. The student AND the master both are the Divine clothed in a human body, and as such, we are both already infinite beings of the light of the Christ! Isn't that exciting? :-)
Remember, we are ALL master AND students simultaneously, perpetually, for our entire existence!
Remember: the true master isn't the one who has the most dependent students-- the true master is the one who CREATES THE MOST MASTERS!
