I think perhaps they may have existed once, but became extinct, or some other animal was mistaken for them.

If you're interested, I'd recommend "The Truth About Unicorns", by James Cross Giblin, which has the history of unicorns and unicorn like creatures all the way from ancient Greece and Rome.

I was a big unicorn fan myself when I was younger :)

It's in Deut. 33:17 of the King James version. It's describing Joseph, saying his horns are like the horns of unicorns.

It's only the King James vs. AFAIK, and probably just a metaphor drawing on the folklore of the time period. Not really saying they exist, just useing their imagery.

Seems awful strange that the unicorn is mentioned, and only in 'imagery'.
How can you use 'imagery' if there's no such thing?
But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil Psalms 92:10 (KJV)

God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn. Numbers 23:22 (KJV)

As I was watching, a male goat appeared from the west, coming across the face of the whole earth without touching the ground. The goat had a horn between its eyes.
Daniel 8:5 (New Revised Standard Version)

Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib? Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee? Job 39:9-10 (KJV)

I said no, but I wish they existed. I've read that the rhinocerous may have sparked the myth about unicorns, but I prefer to think that once they did exist and are now extinct, similar to dragons. I don't really want to over-analyze it and take all the magic out of life. :)

Because they had been written about by the Greeks and were a big part of Middle Ages folklore? Kind of like poets nowadays using mythology, folklore and even pop culture in their poetry...it doesn't mean they existed, just that they are something people would know about and associate certain traits with and is ingrained in the psyche.

All of those you listed from the King James Version are not actually talking about unicorns as creatures, just relating other things back to them. Since pretty much everyone would have known what they were, and associated strength, honor, purity, ect. with them, it makes sense they would have been used.

As for:

As I was watching, a male goat appeared from the west, coming across the face of the whole earth without touching the ground. The goat had a horn between its eyes.

I don't know anything about that particular translation of the bible, or the context this is in; however it does go along with my theory of people seeing one creature and thinking it was a unicorn. It is specifically called a goat, and it is possible it could have only been seen from one side, or that it had some sort of birth defect that caused the horns to grow together. Or that it had simply just been made up as part of a story *shrug*

I don't believe in unicorns though there is a theory that unicorns of mythology are actually goats whose horns were altered to grow together. Magot Alder's Drawing Down the Moon features Oberon and Morningglory Zell RavenHeart and their flock of goats and they did a minor surgury on some of their kids' horn buds to turn them in "unicorns".

Actually unicorn means 'having one horn'. There have been cases of animals who's horns have grown together in a genetic defect and/or mutation. This of course is not like the mystical unicorn but the deformity in animals, though rare, could of been the bases for the myth.

As for the mystical unicorn...who knows for sure? Perhaps it was a spiritual creature or just a creature from another realm that has occasionally shown itself to a few.

Anything is possible, even if not probable!! Just a thought! :)

I say yes..without proof. :)

Also the material many horns are formed from decays easier than bone so fossils may not be possible. Also some horns are edible to animals like mice. Some animals that shed their horns annually have a horn that mice and other rodents eat and gnaw into dust!!

Several real life unicorns have been crafted. It is commonly known as the "Living Unicorn Project", by Oberon Zell-Ravenheart.

His unicorn was featured in the Barnum & Bailey Circus. It looked like a goat with a fake horn attached. In fact, as radiography and x-rays proved, it was a real, growing horn which was crafted by transplanting the real horn buds from their normal position to one in the center of the forehead.

Well unicorns are mentioned in ancient times (Sumerian & Babylonian traditions for instance) though it seemed they looked different to modern day versions. They were said to have a white body, a red mane, blue eyes and a single horn. The horn was white, black and red

Pliny describes them as having a horses body, a stag's head, feat of an elephant and tail of a boar

It does seem that vistors to India area do report seeing them or hearing them spoken about as though they were as common as elephants up to 1500s

John Williamson research into unicorns is fascinating if you're interested and of course the French tapestries which tell the story of the unicorn -the last frame being the unicorn captive and unable to roam the physical world

In 1994 an alleged horn from an unicorn was sold at auction in London for a few thousands - it was carved with jesters, dragons and green men (though its doubtful it was from a real unicorn)

And in the 16th century the English crown jewels were suppose to include unicorn horn

A cup "made from unicorn" horn (with gold and diamonds in it) was said to have been inherited from Queen Elizabeth I by King James I who then gave it as a gift to the Duke of Brittany

If you look at the history of European royals a lot of them claim to own Unicorn horns (or did in the 16th century)

There is still a "unicorn horn" in a catherdral at St Denis France

So my take it this - clearly something out there triggered the rumours, I hope it was a real unicorn but I have an open mind. Would be interesting to have some proper research into the "unicorn horns" that do exist to see if even just one of them could be from a unicorn

I agree that some sort of tests should be done on it. It would be interesting to know what it was!

Was it very old? Because I can see why someone would buy it if they were rich, even if they didn't believe in unicorns, if it has some historical or archaeological value.

It was old medieval I think but I do remember the buyer really thought it was unicorn.....mind you if unicorns did exist probably explains why they died out if we kept cutting the horns of!

I voted yes, seen one. No I have not seen a horse with a horn on it's head. While I do believe that such creatures exist, in one form or another. To me a plain old horse is just as special as a unicorn.
A unicorn is nothing more than a gussied up horse.

I need to post an old old journal entry of mine...

I saw a documentary on mythical creatures once. Turns out that swordfish horns were sold as unicorn horns. And myth became legend. Ground into a powder thay were meant as an aphrodisiac associated with the unicorns' infatuation with virgins, and used to extend one's lifetime. Christians saw the beast as satan conquered by purity and chastity.

Dear Journal,
Today we start math. Well, anyway, do you believe in unicorns? I do. Why? I don't know. My friend P.W., along with a few other people also believe in unicorns. A unicorn is a creature that looks like a horse, only it has a long, spiral horn in the middle of its forhead. I have read that unicorns became extinct when Noah's Ark occured. I believe that they still exist, and I might always will, even though I may never see any. I believe that unicorns eat mainly rose petals. Many people and "resources" will more than likely tell you that unicorns do not exist, but I think they DO exist. According to me, unicorns live on a tiny continent called Elysia. Many other magical creatures live here also.

Dude, where did I come up with all that?! :foh:
I recognize Elysia as a place in a book I loved as a kid.

actually, i was just in an apothecary's exhibition in a little museum (with banondraig) and among alot of other really interesting things we saw little pots of "unicorn horn". the plaque on the side said that unicorn horn was used to cure illnesses, and that most of the time it was actually crushed narwhale (sp?) horns. and sometimes horns of prehistoric animals that people just didn't know much about back then.

as far as folklore about unicorns goes i've heard that to aquire the coveted horn, you have to be a virgin. and sit down under a tree and wait for it to put its head in your lap. it'll fall asleep and then you or someone else can kill it ( :woah: *gasp* nasty folklore ) or just take the horn.

i've also read that they originated in greece and "dwelled in the lilac forests there" or something along those lines. sorry to say i don't remember where i read it.

I've always liked unicorns since I was a little girl.. I use to believe that there was a secret world and one always stayed on Earth to make sure humans stayed pure and had some fantasy. (I was a HUGE Bruce Covillie fan, your typical unicorn/faerie loving little girl, that was me.) I actually went looking for them one time in the mountains, but never found any.

I had one dream in which I saw this huge unicorn (as big as my house), it was a big horse with a wide chest. I don't remember if it was attacking me or not.

As I got older I got a little disgusted with myself because of how cliche they were, but I still keep up all my statues and posters.. Even though my family still might try to give me a unicorn token once in a while, I just sort of smile when inwardly I'm thinking, "Oh god. This -again-.."

Other than that, I've seen and interacted in real life with faeries and dragons, but not yet a unicorn.

I love unicorns and I believe they exist in the astral. I had a book on them when I was little by M. Green called "De Historia Et Veritate Unicornis/on the History and Truth of the Unicorn" that made it seem like they were real and you could solve the riddle and find a real unicorns horn but unfortunately I found out ~10 yrs later its just a puzzle the author created for fun. Apparently there really is an ivory horn burried somewhere in the US though.

I believe that they do exist, just not as many people believe them too. A long time ago, before we destroyed so many of our forests and other natural resources and polluted so much, I believe that Unicorns roamed as freely across the land as any other creature. But as humans began to crowd the earth and more and more took to Christian views and such that said creatures such as Unicorns, Dragons and Gryphons did not exist, they began to fade away. :vanish: Only not exactly like that. They went to another... realm, if you'll call it that, or perhaps even another plane. The same place that I believe faeris and Dragons and Gryphons regularly inhabit when they aren't peeking through to see how the place they got crowded out of so long ago is doing.

I love that movie so much, I even have a last unicorn ciggerette case I use everyday(my sister got it and the DVD for my B-day a couple of years ago) As for if they are real well I say yes. I have never seen one but I think they are real on a different plane and they can materialize if they want much like dragons and fairies. I have spoken and interacted with fairies and other elementals so it would be strange for me to say I know they exist but not unicorns. I would love to see one someday, and I hope I do.

Unicorns still do exsist, simply you can't see or feel there horns anymore. They look just like npormal horses, but if you use animalspeak, you'll find out that they are a unicorn. Their auras will still have the horn, and it's energy and properties will still be their. In other planes, they still have visible horns.

Also, they sometimes come in from other planes too.

If we can believe in fairies and deities, then I don't see why unicorns would be any different.

They might not exist in this plane of existence, but I do believe they do exist in some form or fashion. My proof would only be valid to me.

As for if they existed in this plane? Who knows? There were a lot of animals that were believed to be myth and were discovered. Black swans were one of them... another was an anteloupe with gills that was written about in many folk tales and myths in this one country. It was written off as nothing more than wild fancies and if it had existed, that it was long extinct. A year or two ago, someone actually got footage of one while trying to record something else. A young one! Go figure.

All because we haven't seen it doesn't mean it didn't or doesn't exist. The world is too curious a place for that.

it can actually be done quite easily when the goats are being disbudded with a hot dehorning iron. We had one at the dairy where i used to work..he was an accident since they were learning to dehorn and he didn't hold still for the procedure..

When disbudding the hot iron should make a bright copper colored burn completely around each horn bud.. in his case they only burned the outside edge (closest to his eyes & ears) and didn't get a good burn on the sides of the horn bud towards the middle of his forehead. As his horn grew .. it grew into one horn

I have proof....

My 9 year old daughter informed me when she was four that her real parents were unicorns and that I was her earth mother. One night she couldn't wait to go to bed, she said that her father was coming home tonight. She explained that he went away when she was born. The next day I asked her how her night went. She told me that it was great, and that her father had to go away when she was born so that she could live. She also has unicorn brothers and sisters.
