Small dilemma. I tried a search and couldn't turn anything up. I might be searching for the wrong words though.

I usually put my stones in a baggie and smack them with a hammer to break them. Today I've been trying to make a powder the same way. The problem is that by the time I've got a powder, I also have a really holy bag and tons of mess. I even tried doing it in a small piece of fabric -- that was worse!

Does anyone have any tips for crushing stones? Am I just going about it totally wrong?

Thanks!

I suppose the problem is not the fabric but the underground
if you need crushing minerals into powder, best way woul be using a
metal anvil/ambos. plus a sledge/hammer

that should do the trick

if you work with a metal ambos as surface than grinding itr with a hammer should not take as long, therefore use a jeans cloth bag or a leather pouch

and what could be helpfull is to get your ambos into a kind of bowl with slightly higher ends that the ambos

Curious.....

What do you intend to do with the powered stones?

Hi-I know this may sound weird but try using a mylar baloon. You know- the silver ones. Mylar is pretty tough so if you are crushing a stone that isn't too hard it will probably work without making any holes in the balloon so you won't loose your stone dust and particles. Please let me know if this works. I used to work in a rock and gem store and some of our specimens were shipped in baggies like those balloons so I figured it might just work. Good luck.
