Questions for those of you who see ghosts/spirits...

I am VERY curious when it comes to all things paranormal.
My first question is this...why is it that some people can see things and others cannot? It seems to be something you're born with or has anyone discovered these abilities later in life?
Now I'm not saying I want to see a ghost because I don't know what my reaction would be or what...but...how can a person become more...open to these types of things like seeing ghosts or spirits or communicating with them?

The closest I have ever been with anything like this is being able to sense when there is a different type of energy in the room...the feeling of someone else being there in the room with me.
Don't get me wrong...I'm not out on a wild ghost chase or anything... I'm not planning on doing anything stupid.....I just need to know.

Like you, I'm much better at sensing something paranormal than at seeing it. The only time I've actually seen a ghost was when I had been working with a metaphysical study group and had been expanding my awareness and trying to see auras, I must have opened up my third eye the furthest it's ever been open.

However, I've seen some small spirits that I wouldn't really call a ghost. One lived in my home for about 20 years, it was about the size of a small dog or a large cat, and it "seemed" hairy like that. We called it Cousin Itt. When I kicked my ex out of the house Cousin Itt moved out with him, which tickled me because he moved in with his mistress and she hated Cousin Itt. :smileroll

I too had a very wild imagination as a kid and still not sure if the things that happened to me as a child were all in my head or not. Well...I'd have to say not to one thing.

I see, commune, and serenade the dead. I discovered I could do this when I was very young. I do believe that it is easier for you to contact them if you are born with this gift, but you can "train yourself" to do this. I learned to control it through medatation. However, it is extremely difficult to summon them. I have found out that when I play my piano, they seem to start appearing. What I am trying to say is find out what the spirits around you like i/e singing, playing music( either cds, playing a certain instrument ect.), or what ever you find out they like. Let me tell you a story.
After my aunt died, there were a lot of messages that were sent through dream and voice phenomenon. One night my grandmother had a dream about my aunt. They were really close perhaps thats because they were sisters. Anyway, in her dream, she saw my aunt in a field of white daisies(my aunts favorite flower) my grandmother walked towards her and my aunt just stood there. Then, finally my aunt smiled and said "I'm sorry.". The next day my grandmother was on the computer and she heard my aunt wisper in her ear and said "Susie, I'm not mad at you.". Several weeks after that my grandmother heard her voice but with my uncle sherman who died around the same time my aunt did. They called my grandmothers name and she said it sounded like it was far away. After that happened my grandmother said she got a feeling of warning from them. A few weeks after that I was out in the backyard playing my guitar and I saw her in the corner under a tree
looking at me in satisfaction. After I quit playing I said " When ever you want me to play just tap me on the shoulder and I'll be right out.". Since then I have always waited for her to tap me on the shoulder but she never has and I have not seen her since. I always think to myself and wonder If she stuck around to hear me play one last time. However, since then, I've had an audiance if you will, of about 5 ghostly people everytime I play. I don't see them at first, but after I have played for about 15 minutes they start to appear. Now let me warn you of something, people are very judgmental about this subject so if you do expearience this phenomenon, you must keep it to yourself, unless your in the situation I'm in at this moment. The theory I've heard most often is that everyone is born with this type of ability but they are trained not to "see" as they grow older. A little too new agey for me but who knows.

It's not that big a deal. Firstly apparitions ("spirits" that manifest in a quasi physical form{ie, do you see that guy over there?}) are very rare. Secondly the mind does play tricks on you, not every presence is a disembodied intelligence, most are just hallucinations. Thirdly(particularly important if you are looking into a "haunting" on someone else's behalf) ALWAYS look for the mundane answer. Temperature variations can be caused by heating/cooling vents or poorly sealed windows and doors. Slight variations in the magnetic field of a given location can cause funny "vibes" or appliances to malfunction. And some people are just liars.*shrug* Put simply, never assume anything until you have exausted all the plausible answers.

I sense them all the time. More on an energy level rather than actually SEEING them. I can feel them very strongly.

I can walk around the house and then just stop and stare straight ahead and know that some sort of presence is there standing before me staring back.

I cant say its the greatest feeling in the world, but it is rather interesting. When you get used to it, you dont mind it too much anymore. Most the spirits who come in and out of my room (I have this portal that keeps opening up) are harmless, and I'm about "live and let live" - If they dont cause trouble, I'll just let them chill, so to speak.

A while back I was haunted by a not so nice presence though. It was stronger than the previous ones I sensed. And I actually got to see that one - Not great since it didnt really have a nice look to it. It was quick, but it was there. It gave me horrible nightmares for about 2 weeks too. I've also had a couple of ghosts play with my hair (yes...) and few whom curled over my head and lay there when I was sleeping. A few days ago, I actually was sitting at my brother's room messing with the computer, when i heard foot steps behind me, and I thought my brother was there, so I looked back and he wasnt there.. I thought he was hiding and I was like "Jonathan, STOP!".. then I looked around all over the room and he wasnt there (and he's a big boy - 16 LOL).. Neither was my dog (he was outside).. Then I heard a child's laughter and the energy in the room changed for a few moments, then went back to normal.

Theres definitly some ghost activity around me constantly, most of it is harmless and sometimes amusing. I dont know if I was born with it. But I do know that as I was advancing on my spiritual path, I've learned to sense and began noticing the presence of spirits around me. I think you can be born with it AND aquire it.

everyone is different and experiences things differently
for instance, my mom has seen two spirits of people she actually knew that died, they came to her for a moment (seperate instances) smiled , then disappeared, I however have never seen someone I knew personally, I have always seen more like shadows and/ or figures bathed in light, but no actual features, I sense things more than see them too.
like when I went to the Tower of London: I knew what I was getting into, being that it is the most haunted place in the world, anyway, there were a couple of areas where my sister and I had a hard time breathing, the air was so thick and heavy, we had to leave.
sometimes I can walk in a room or touch something and get vibratons off of them, good and bad vibrations, some places I refuse to enter because of the negative energy and the fact that I am so sensitive to it
oh yes I could go on and on about my family's experiences with spirits and such, but I won't bore ya :D

The bible speaks of the gift of disernment,that would be the ability to see the unseen force behind the person , thats driving them to say or do what they do.We are not robots,but we can be inspired and moved by good or evil by outside influences,unseen ones.The bible also says that the wicked one can appear as an angel of light,and his ministers as mesangers of light,The wolf in sheeps clothes frase.People who outwardly seem good,but inwardly are wicked,unfortunatly,there are some behind pulpits that way,but not all.ohwell,this is just my insite,bless you.

I have only ever had 2 experiences that made me realize that I don't care if I ever experience the paranormal ever again. One dealt with the fae, fairies, little scary aliens, whatever you want to call them. They are not happy to be messed with, they are real ( I can't believe I am typing this...) and we ain't JACK to them. The other deals with when people in my family passed away, my Grandmother always said that the soul left through the head. Many of the pillows that the older generation of my family passed away on were made with feathers. Once on accident, it was discovered that there was a small circular feather circle of tightly woven feathers in the center of the pillow. It was abut 2 to 3 inches in diameter. Since then, a few others have happened to form, but not in all cases of course since that was mainly the ones who could not go to the hospital and or died at home.

So azzeenasman, are you saying that all spirits are either evil or angels? I don't quite get it....do you believe there are such things as simply souls who have not moved on and are neither?

I don't know if it's something that can be developed. I want to say yes, because one can learn how to detect energy changes and so on. I can see spirits and sense them. I sense them first and then if I want to know where they are at I will open up to see them. I have to concentrate, like if I were looking at a magic eye photo, and then I can see them. In my experience spirits have no real shape, almost like a little mass of fog, those are the calm ones. Ones with negative energy take on a harder shape and are a bit darker in color. I have also seen spirits that still cling onto to their human shape they had when they passed. In the ones I have come across either the spirits don't realize they are dead yet, can't move on for whatever reason, or refuse to move on.

I am going with the "every one is born with it but trained out of it" theory. I use to think witches and ghosts were just a bunch of hoey, then i volintered at a haunted house with some of my friends, where I met a guy who was a ghost hunter (photography, voice recording, magnetic fluxes the works) not untill then did it occure to me that there even might be a posibility. At the haunted house there were several reports of a spirit there and my friend brought some one in and found two. I never really encounterred anything untill the last two nights. the first night I kept seeing orbs pop into and out of focous, thought i was just tired and seeing things. I asked my friend about it and he said there was lots of emotional energy form everyone there and getting closer to leaving. the last night no one came through so i just sat in my corner and twittled my thumbs. i thought i saw some more orbs then my head just shot to the left wall, no idea why, I must have staired at it for about 30 seconds before realising I was doing it. then a face poped out of the wall and went back in. I was freeked so I went back to tell my frined. Turning the corner I again stoped and staired at the wall with out knowing. it looked like moss on a tree that was constantly growing and sheading the dead growth in waves of translucent green. Then I felt a hand press down into my hair and move side to side. I swong around to give a jab to who ever was doing it and found I was the only one in the hall, and there were no places to hide.
since then i have more discovered that you can see them more when they want to be seen.

Hi,Well,I dont know if you are familiar with the christian faith,and im not saying i have it all figured out,but I believe,it is apointed unto man,once to die,and after this the judgement,.bible I believe we will all be judged after death,not wander around or come back as an animal.How exactly it will happen Im not sure,I know what the scriptures say,some things arent clear always.Humans and animals arent the same,we are created in the image and likeness of God,animals were not.Animals killing and eating each other is normal,humans doing it isnt,because we are higher than them,we were created for God to live in us and walk in us,and to worship God.In my humble opinion,yes,God is the source of all good,and everything good comes from him.
God is with some people and they dont realize it,the wicked one(devil)uses and moves in the lives of others,and sometimes they dont realize it either.You can be used of God,and not realize it,the same goes for the enemy.(devil)
There are powers in the spirit world that are unseen,a persons weopons against them is love,kindness,prayer,forgiveness,mercy. These are the atributes of God,this is his nature. The friuts of the wicked one is hate,deception,murder,lies,theft,

First of all Hi back, and blessings to you. Though we haven't spoken before, I have seen many of your other posts, and find it impressive that you are able to express your beliefs so honestly in a place/forum that must seem quite alien to you at times...

Ok, now to the meat of things. One of the things that I personally find "alien" or at least very difficult to reconcile in my brain...is what seems to me to be a form of circular logic involved in the Biblical admonishments against communicating with spirits and the concept, that you appear to agree with that all spirits (except the Holy one) are really demons/evil spirits attempting to deceive people in order to control them and turn them to the Devil.

This general argument seems to go:
Person A: I have been visited by a spirit and it warned me of impending disaster, and helped me save someone (for example).
Person B: Well, are you aware of the Bible's teachings on spirits? Even though this spirit did something good, it is only trying to deceive you and get control of you.
Person A: But if all Good comes from God then how could an Evil spirit be doing good without the will of God?
Person B: To deceive you. You must test the spirit to see if it is "of God"
Person A: What does the test consist of?
Person B: The first question is always "What do they believe about Jesus? Then, What is Their Relation to the Spirit of God? and then, Are They in Harmony with the Word of God?(Bible)
Person A: So, you are telling me that good spirits do not exist because it says so in the Bible, that even if they only do good works, it is merely deception, and the only way to test this is to ask them if they believe in and follow the very bible that says they are evil?

See? to me, it is like a "proof" that is testing a question like "Is grass really green?" And the first absolute is to say "Grass is green." By doing so, you can never really test your proof, and only reinforce what you already believe.....I hope you understand, I am not saying anyone's beliefs are "wrong," just that for me, there is a flawed logic involved in this type of argument. If I experience a spirit and that spirit does nothing but good in my life and until or unless it does something evil, why should I assume that it is only deception that drives it? Shouldn't my experience be my guide rather than someone else's words?

Actually, while I respect your religion very much as well as everyone else's, I can tell you from experience that the spirits whom I have stumbled upon in the past, have a very sort of "neutral" feeling to them. I have had some unpleasent experiences with what one might call "evil". And I have had experiences with what one might call "angelic" or "good".

There is definitly a rainbow of spirits and ghosts ranging from nice, playful and harmless to offensive, nasty and VERY unfriendly ones. Whether you want to look at that as angles VS demons - Is up to you. But I guarentee you that not all spirits who arent Angels, are evil and out to get us poor humans. Not at all. Most of these spirits, just wander down and are indifferent.


Edited to Add: As a Theologist at heart and a soon to be Historian (spcifically church Theology and History) - I have to add that the person writing the bible added the entire "do not conjure up spirits becaus thats against God" deal becaue the Jews of the time (out of which the bible sprung), wanted to be different and apart from the various polytheistic tribes and people whom surrounded the Acient Middle Eastern World - Those who believed in Various Pantheons of gods, Those who worked with Herbology and Healing, Those whom had special cults and Priests for special Religious worship as well as Festivals etc, Those who practiced Divinity and indeed contacting spirits.

Much like the laws of the Kosher diet, Marriage, Bris (Circumcizion) and Homosexuality.

Well, I'll start off by saying that I'm typically as Sensitive as a fence-post. ^_^ I've seen two things: one, a little boy made of moonlight sitting on the end of my bed; two, a tree covered in fairies. (those were about 10 years apart) But in general, when my friends sense things I'm all "ummm... and???..." even in areas that are supposed to be haunted or somehow affected. Lol, my roommate last year had some kind of malicious "thing" following her around, and even when she'd say it's in the same room, I got nada. ^_^ lol. I helped exorcise it, but I never felt anything...

I don't know how I feel about the "everyone's born with it" idea... I mean, I grew up Pagan, believing in fairies and spirits and dragons, and I never stopped using my imagination and I have yet to join the "real world"... Furthermore, nothing traumatic has ever happened to me. I was a very emotional child, the kind that you'd expect to have things manifest around, but nothing.

I'd think that my friends were making it up, until we went to Gettysburg and both my mom and her friend could feel the death at a certain place there. Still got nothing... So even when reasonable people feel stuff, I get nothing. I mean, you can make a case for those children who are told not to make up things or who "grow up" into the mundane world of their parents... but my worldview has never been mundane.

I don't know about evil spirits vs. good spirits... Perhaps something that would work into that kind of vision is to include nature spirits... neutral manifestations of creation? I dunno. Anyway...

i don't know, i think if the sprit wants to be known to you, then it will be... i have seen my grandmother's ghost, shortly after her death... it was really weird, we had rearranged the furniture in her room and everything, but i went in there, and everything was back to normal, and she was sitting in her bed, watching TV... of course, weird things have been happening to me since i was a child, but i don't know if it was anything i was born with, i just think i may have been using parts of my brain that i wasn't supposed to have access to....

And your right,the fact that I can express myself here says a lot about the people here,who have my uttmost respect.Actually Im totally in love with everyone here,dont know why im here but I consider myself everyones servant,just not sure what to do,so,I love and bless in the name of the Lord who loves me.And you too.
Well,you have a good piont,my humble opinion is that we all have angels who have helped us,we may atribute it to someone else,but it was God who sent them,because of his great love for us.God has delivered so many,although they new it not,but it was his love and grace,which is unconditionall and towards all. The devil is a fallen angel and has no good in him,he hates all of humanity because he knows we are made in Gods image,the devil cannot love anyone,it isnt part of who he is.The angels who followed him are the spirits that work with him.If you want to see his work,pick up any newspaper and begin to read,you will see his hate(in the name of god)and his wars of greed,children and women murdered,anger,theft,and so on.Perhaps we arent talking about the same person,but I have been made aware of the tricks of the devil,because of Christ,I can see God in people and I can see the enemy.
I cant say that every revalation a person may have had,is evil,I dont know that,but you can always tell by the works,and the end,and the fruit that is brought forth,weather something is of God,or not.A tree is known by the fruit it bears.
But the devil has a false religion and a false sense of what is right,but its always backward,he has a way of turning what is right,and making people think its wrong,and turning what is wrong,and making it seem right. The standard has been set by the God of Israel.
God is love,and he is the source of all love.The devil is a liar,and the father of all lies,bible.
Sometimes he will mix truth with a lie,but there is one way to always tell,if any spirit being is of God,
You ask in the name of Jesus Christ to have the being make himself known,but that can be dangerous.The devil hates Christ,he loves religion,that doesnt include Christ,Christ was the one who defeated him and bought our salvation,with his blood.Thats why Christ is hated by the wicked one.
Well,Im starting to preach now and Im not supposed to do that here.When you speak the name of Jesus,you have authority over satan,and he knows it.He doesnt rule me,God does.
So he goes about to keep people away from Christ,anyway he can,because its only through Christ that we can be saved.I dont say that much hear cause everyone already knows it,so I just bless and love in the name of the Lord.I asked the Lord for friends,next thing I know,Ive got 15000 of em and pagans at that. Believe me precious one,Ive prayed hard,almost been banned,called all kinds of names,cursed and threatened,but I have been a little disrespectfull myself,so I cant complain.
Im honored to be among pagans here and call them my friends,I love them with all my heart,Ill be here untill im banned,who knows how long Ill last? I cant say that every revalation a person may have had,is evil,I dont know that,but you can always tell by the works,and the end,and the fruit that is brought forth,weather something is of God,or not.A tree is known by the fruit it bears.

I agree wholeheartedly with this statement--though we surely have a very different idea of the God(s) in question...that is unimportant (to me) it is the fact that we both see that a person is defined by what they DO, which was part of the point of my last post. :) I guess I just think that this is how we should look at spirits as well, if and/or when we encounter them.

I saw a few things that I remember seeing when I was a small child, but my sight was mostly active during and after puberty (and then on since). I have been told it's common for the sight to be activated during puberty, so I guess these abilities can be discovered later in life.

The closest I have ever been with anything like this is being able to sense when there is a different type of energy in the room...the feeling of someone else being there in the room with me.

At least you sense them! I usually see things without a sense of them being there. So I get quite startled! :bug:

I have not had any great experiances with spirits. My wife how ever is very sensitive to these things allthough not fanatical. For 2 years for one day a year in oct. after I woke at 5 am to go to work she would see a ghost of a child at the foot of the bed who would come around and get under the covers and then vanish. For the last 2 years it has not happened. But the rare family guest we have with us have reported the feeling that somthing has pressed the mattress down in the guest bed room. I trust my wife completely even though I can not experiance these things. Wish I could.

Mostly I just saw lights moving and heard sounds that I shouldn't have as a kid and became so frightened of what I realized it must be that I began to ignore the sounds and keep my eyes closed so that I wouldn't have to deal with it anymore. Soon after I began that the phenomenon died away so I know that you can definitely block out your abilities. Getting them back ain't so easy.

Well. we have 2 sets of eyes and ears,our outer ones,and our inner ones.A person can see phisically,but be blind,a person can hear with his natural ear,yet not be able to hear God,who speaks to all.

My spirit can sense God and the presence of evil.I have seen evil spirits in the spirit world,and they have spoken to me,God has also spoken to me as well,we can recieve gifts from God and we can fine tune our spirits to both see and hear,but unbelief will cause a person to be blind and deaf to the things of the Spirit.

Anytime we talk about the spirit world we are in angelic and demonic territory,where battles rage for dominion and souls,Where angels and demons fight for athority and dominion over the lives of all humanity.

Daniel in the bible prayed and fasted for endtime revelation wisdom and when an angel finally came to him the angel said he was held back by forces of darkness,and was delayed,then after speaking with daniel,the angel went back and fought somemore.

I believe anyone has the abilty to see spirit -just some are more naturally gifted than others. My ability has increased with age though I was born with it, but I have seen people taught and taught people myself to see spirit so I know it it possible to learn

The most important thing in learning is to acknowledge spirit when you feel the slightest hint of their presence - like the energy changes you describe.
Spirits have feelings like we do and if they feel that you are constantly ignoring their efforts to make themselves heard they can feel disheartened just as we would be if we kept getting ignored

I read in a book somewhere if you actively seek them/aren't afraid...you might actually get to see one. For to actively seek you'd have to believe...& I'm pretty sure they can sense that stuff. _tomatoe_

The idea of meeting a ghost is more scary than when you actually see one. When I've encountered ghosts I wasn't as frightened as I thought I'd be.

OK, about 3 years ago I was staying at my boyfriends house while I got back on my feet. While I was staying there I was sleeping in the living room. One night I woke up and saw an old lady standing there in the doorway, in a long white gown. I was freaked out, and turned the tv on for the light and fell asleep eventually. The next day I mentioned it to my boyfriend, but he blew me off about it. I told his mom and she said it was odd b/c she had been hearing the kitchen cabinets opening & closing during the night. Then she told me about how the house was built in the early 1900's and that an old woman had died there. It was the first I heard about this old woman dying...and I believe that it was the same old woman's spirit that I had seen the night before. My boyfriend still doesn't believe me, but I believe that I saw this woman.

Two years later I moved into an apartment with a friend, Steve. The first night sleeping there, I fell into a deep sleep, but awoke a few hours later when I heard a loud scratching noise at my closet door. I immediately sat up, ready to yell at my cat, when I realized she was curled up between my knees, ears back, hissing at the door. I was freaked out...but I was so tired from moving that I ignored it.
That morning, I was late for work...my alarm clock didn't go off...it was still set for 8:30 am. I woke up at 9.
The next few nights went by with nothing unusual, until one night I fell asleep only to be awoken by my tv being on. After sitting up, trying to figure out how it got turned on, it turned itself off. Several times that night I woke up to my tv being on, the remote sitting next to the tv the whole time, and then once I was awake, it would turn back off.
My cell phone charger was plugged in by the same corner where the tv was...by the haunted closet. Nightly, the light on my cell phone would turn on and off...like there was someone calling, but no one was.
Late one night after coming home my boyfriend was laying in my bed while I was in the other room. I had a heavy dark blanket over the window that made the room pitch black at night. When I came in the room, my boyfriend was freaked out b/c he had seen lights shining across the room. This was NOT possible since the blanket was over the window, and the building faced another building, it could not have been a car.
Finally I mentioned all the wierd stuff to my roommate. He asked if I had seen the purple stain on the carpet. I said yes, and he told me that one night he & his girlfriend had lit candles in there, only to look over, see the flame go about a foot high, then go out and tumble to the floor. this happened several times...by the closet!
He had other stories but would not tell me, since I was sleeping in that room!
How freaky is that? Since then, I haven't had any other issues w/ghosts/spirits.

I've only seen 1 to my knowledge, but feel I've had expiriences with them. What do you think? Is it maybe a figment of my imagination? Or is this real!??!

Well I think what you experienced was real -it fits the pattern of many ghosty experiences
